Seiko’s ai-iro Presage Classic Series comes in two distinct versions: the SPB525 has a conventional date display, while the SPB527 uses a semi-skeleton dial and adds a 24-hour hand. Their listed case dimensions and core specifications match; the main decision is whether you prefer the more open display and its additional hand at the higher Seiko US listed price.

Seiko’s US specification pages list the same precision range for both: +25 to -15 seconds per day. That is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee of observed performance or a claim that one caliber keeps better time. The listed features establish the display and function differences, but do not determine real-world legibility or comfort.

What ai-iro means
Seiko Watch Corporation describes “ai-iro” as “a dark indigo-dyed color known as ‘Japan Blue’.” Japan Blue is the color description, not the official name of either watch. Seiko presents the Classic Series as drawing on traditional Japanese crafts, colors, materials, and textures; it says the series’ curved, textured dials are inspired by natural textiles and silk. That is Seiko’s design explanation, not evidence of the specific dye or textile origin of these individual dials.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the SPB525 for a date display
The SPB525 is the straightforward option if you want a conventional date window and prefer a less open dial design. Seiko US listed it at USD 995.00 when checked on October 8, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Seiko Presage Cocktail Time U.S. Special Creation
- Special creation celebrating craft beer cocktails
- Fine mechanical watchmaking from Japan
- Automatic with manual winding capability
- Inspired by the Beer Julep cocktail, the gloss-finish gold dial is vertically gradated to suggest the sparkling hues of a fresh pour, while the pressed pattern evokes its bubbling effervescence
Choose the SPB527 for the semi-skeleton display
The SPB527 makes the movement part of the dial presentation and adds a 24-hour hand. Seiko US listed it at USD 1,200.00 on October 8, 2026. Its listed power reserve and case measurements match the SPB525, so its documented distinction is the display and additional hand—not a stated performance advantage.

Both models share a 40.2 mm diameter, 46.0 mm lug-to-lug length, 13.0 mm thickness, and 20 mm lug spacing on Seiko’s US pages. Those measurements make the references directly comparable on paper, but they cannot establish how either watch will sit on a particular wrist. Likewise, the listed specifications do not establish dial legibility in varied lighting, bracelet comfort, or accuracy in use; those depend on wearing experience.
US pricing and availability
As checked October 8, 2026, Seiko’s US pages listed the SPB525 at USD 995.00 and the SPB527 at USD 1,200.00. These are US manufacturer-listed prices, not worldwide prices or confirmed retailer street prices. Retailer pricing and stock may differ; the listed figures do not establish availability in other markets.
