The Seiko Presage SPB359 is a 2,500-piece limited edition that looks back to the Laurel, Seikosha’s 1913 wristwatch, without reproducing its mechanics or full dial layout. It carries over the rounded case, onion crown, white enamel dial, Arabic numerals and blued hands, but adds a modern automatic movement, date display and power-reserve indicator. Seiko announced availability for January 2023; that release date and edition size do not establish current stock or value.
How closely does the SPB359 recreate the 1913 Laurel?
Seiko says Seikosha began producing the Laurel in 1913 and describes it as Japan’s first wristwatch. The SPB359 was introduced for the 110th anniversary of Seiko wristwatches. Its round form, large onion crown, white enamel dial, retro-styled blue hands and Arabic numerals deliberately recall the original, but this is a modern interpretation rather than a mechanically exact reproduction. Seiko’s Laurel anniversary page describes the crown as faithfully recreated; the official Philippines store sums up the approach as “Faithful in design, modern in technology.”

The difference is especially clear on the dial. The original Laurel used three hands with small seconds. The SPB359 instead has central hours, minutes and seconds, a date indication at six, and a discreet power-reserve display at nine. The subdial at six is therefore not a small-seconds register.
What do the enamel dial and details contribute?
The white enamel dial is the watch’s defining craft feature. Seiko credits master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and colleagues at a workshop specializing in enamel production. Seiko’s Presage craftsmanship explainer says enamel was used on the Laurel and describes its soft sheen; it also explains that craftspeople adjust enamel composition to account for humidity and weather. That is Seiko’s account of its craft process, not an independent assessment of this particular dial’s long-term durability.
#1 Best Overall
- Seiko Presage Cocktail Time U.S. Special Creation
- Special creation celebrating craft beer cocktails
- Fine mechanical watchmaking from Japan
- Automatic with manual winding capability
- Inspired by the Beer Julep cocktail, the gloss-finish gold dial is vertically gradated to suggest the sparkling hues of a fresh pour, while the pressed pattern evokes its bubbling effervescence
Black Arabic numerals give the dial a clear, period-influenced character, with a red 12 and a distinctive numeral 4 as notable accents. Blued hands add a contrasting detail, while the large onion crown reinforces the Laurel reference. Monochrome’s hands-on report also notes that the deer-leather strap uses a complex two-piece pull-through arrangement and a steel pin buckle, echoing the narrow, elaborate band associated with the early Laurel. The supplied design does not establish compatibility with generic replacement straps, so verify fit before buying an alternative.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you think about its size and wear?
The listed 37.5 mm diameter is paired with a 12.6 mm thickness, so diameter alone does not describe the watch’s profile. Seiko Boutique Malaysia lists a 39.3 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 74 g weight. Those figures give useful case dimensions, but they cannot establish how the watch will fit a particular wrist; try it on if fit is decisive.
Is the SPB359 still available, and what does it cost?
Seiko announced a 2,500-piece run and January 2023 availability. Monochrome stated a launch-era price of €1,900 in its 2022 article; that is historical pricing, not a current retail price or resale valuation. The Malaysia boutique listing displayed “Out of stock” when crawled, and the Philippines store showed a related product as “Sold Out.” These are regional page observations that can change, not proof of worldwide availability or scarcity today.

What is the historical context?
Seiko’s account places Laurel production in 1913, and says the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers designated the Laurel a “Mechanical Engineering Heritage” in 2014. The SPB359 turns that history into a contemporary Presage: enamel and period cues carry the visual link, while its automatic 6R27 and extra indications make it a different watch in function.
