The Seiko Prospex SLA061J1 is a 1,000-piece Black Series reinterpretation of Seiko’s 1970 mechanical diver, released in March 2022. It pairs a 44mm hard-coated steel case and Caliber 8L35 with a black-and-orange design, a five-row steel bracelet, and an extra silicone strap. Seiko’s published specifications answer what the watch is; they do not establish current stock or price, and this is not a first-person wear or performance review.
What the SLA061J1 is
Seiko identifies the model as SLA061; SLA061J1 is the reference used in the US specification result. It belongs to the Prospex Black Series and reinterprets the brand’s 1970 diver. Seiko announced a limited run of 1,000 pieces, with availability beginning in March 2022. The official Black Series page describes the design and release details at Seiko’s Black Series page.
The design retains the older diver’s flowing case shape and asymmetrical protection around the crown at four o’clock. Seiko says the black finish evokes the darkness and silence of the night ocean, while orange represents lights illuminating it. The textured dial is intended to recall sand on the seabed; the orange seconds hand carries the color accent onto the dial.
Seiko also attributes a notable piece of the 1970 diver’s history to adventurer Naomi Uemura: its Black Series page says he wore the original during a 12,000km solo dog-sled journey from Greenland to Alaska between 1974 and 1976. That is Seiko’s account of the watch’s history.

Seiko says Caliber 8L35 was designed for diver’s watches by watchmakers at Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Japan.
How it compares with the SPB257 Black Series diver
The SLA061 sits above the related SPB Black Series model in Seiko’s lineup on paper: it uses the 8L35 movement, while the SPB trio uses the 6R35. The larger case dimensions and smaller limited run also distinguish the SLA061. The comparison below uses Seiko’s published information; it is not a side-by-side wear test.

Monochrome’s launch article characterized the SLA061 as the higher-end SLA model in that Black Series group. Its EUR 3,300 figure is a reported 2022 launch price, not a current asking price. Seiko’s official US result displayed USD 3,300, but that is a regional listing figure rather than a verified current transaction quote.
Strap compatibility: heed Seiko’s warning
The watch comes with a five-row steel bracelet and an additional black silicone strap. Seiko specifically cautions against fitting a fabric-type strap, stating: “If you attach a fabric type strap to this model, the spring bar may come off due to its structure, and it may not be not possible to replace it.” The warning is tied to the case’s structure; do not assume a fabric strap is compatible or interchangeable.

Can you still buy the SLA061J1?
The watch was announced for March 2022 as a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. Those facts establish its original release, not current availability. The cited sources do not verify present-day stock, a live dealer listing, or a current market price. Check with Seiko-authorized retailers or reputable pre-owned sellers for availability, and confirm the exact reference, condition, included bracelet and silicone strap, and documentation before buying.
Monochrome’s October 2, 2022 launch coverage is useful for historical context and the launch-price report, but it is not a current stock report. Seiko’s official US specification result identifies SLA061/SLA061J1, although its product URL was not accessible when checked for this article; use Seiko’s official channels or a dealer to verify current product information.

What this specification-based review can—and cannot—tell you
The published figures describe a substantial 44mm case, a 185g watch, and a 49.3mm lug-to-lug span. Those measurements are more useful for estimating fit than the heritage description alone, but wrist shape and personal preference still determine how it wears. No hands-on comfort assessment, finishing evaluation, lume observation, or timing test is established here. The stated accuracy range should therefore be read as Seiko’s specification rather than a guarantee of an individual example’s daily rate.
