The Seiko Presage Classic Series SPB497 is a 1,200-piece limited edition built around an unglazed Arita porcelain dial. Seiko lists it at USD 1,850 on its US product page. Its distinctive dial is made by hand and fired at high temperature, so small dimples, dots and color variation are expected characteristics—not necessarily flaws.
What the SPB497 is
Seiko names the model the Presage Classic Series “Craftsmanship” Unglazed Arita Porcelain Dial Limited Edition. Its focus is the pale porcelain dial, whose unglazed surface gives it a different appearance from a conventional finished watch dial. The caseback is see-through and screw-down, engraved with “LIMITED EDITION” and an individual serial number.
How the Arita porcelain dial is made
Seiko says the dial is formed by high-precision casting in a gypsum mold and fired at 1,300°C. The unglazed dial was created under the supervision of Arita porcelain craftsman Hiroyuki Hashiguchi of the Shin-Kama kiln in Arita, Saga Prefecture; Seiko also credits kiln team leader Toshiaki Kawaguchi with contributing expertise. These details describe the maker’s process, rather than independent testing of the finished watch.
Seiko states that the Arita porcelain used for the dial is more than four times stronger than conventional porcelain. That is the company’s material comparison; the official pages do not provide an independent study or a long-term durability result. Seiko also notes that handwork and firing can leave small dimples, tiny dots or uneven color, and that individual genuine dials differ. Buyers should therefore expect natural variation rather than a perfectly uniform, factory-flat surface.

Price and limited-edition status
Seiko’s US product page lists the SPB497 at USD 1,850. This is the listed US price, not a guarantee of current stock or allocation, and it should not be treated as a universal price across regions. Seiko identifies the edition as limited to 1,200 pieces. The published listing does not establish how many remain available.

- Dial character: The porcelain surface and its handmade variation are central to the watch. Choose it for that material and appearance, not in expectation of an absolutely uniform dial.
- Fit: Compare the 40.6 mm diameter and 49.1 mm lug-to-lug measurement with a watch that fits you well; case thickness is 12.5 mm.
- Movement expectations: The 6R51 is automatic and can also be wound manually. Seiko publishes an accuracy range of +25 to -15 seconds per day, so do not read “approximately 72 hours” as a promise of chronometer-rated precision.
- Price and availability: Check Seiko’s local listing or an authorized retailer for current regional pricing and stock rather than assuming the US listing applies where you live.
