Newer Prospex models reinterpret that design rather than reproduce the original unchanged: examples include the 2020 SPB183 and 2021 SPB237, while Seiko’s UK catalog lists the SPB153 as a “1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch.” These releases span different years and markets; they are not all evidence of a newly available global lineup.
What was Seiko’s original 1970 diver?
Seiko’s 1970 diver followed the company’s first diver’s watch, launched in 1965. Seiko specifies the 1970 model’s water resistance at 150 m and identifies its most recognizable feature as an asymmetric case extension that protects the crown at 4 o’clock. That combination of a distinctive silhouette and a practical crown guard is the design foundation behind the modern watches enthusiasts commonly call “Willards.” Seiko’s official pages use names such as “1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation” and “1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch” instead.
Seiko describes the crown arrangement as a defining part of the watch’s durable design. It is not merely a visual flourish: the case projects around the crown, making the offset position and protective profile central to the watch’s appearance.
Why is Naomi Uemura associated with the watch?
Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura wore the 1970 design during an expedition from Greenland to Alaska. Seiko’s 2021 SPB237 product page gives the journey’s particulars: a 12,000 km solo dog-sled trip from 1974 to 1976. Seiko also connects the watch with Uemura’s solo North Pole expedition. The association is part of the model’s history on land, rather than a claim that the watch became famous through a particular underwater dive.

How have modern Prospex models changed the 1970 design?
Modern re-interpretations retain recognizable cues such as the protected 4 o’clock crown, but update materials and specifications. For example, Seiko describes the 2020 SPB183 as having 200 m water resistance and sapphire crystal, compared with the original’s 150 m rating. It uses Caliber 6R35, with a stated 70-hour power reserve, and was announced as a limited edition of 5,500 pieces with planned availability in November 2020. Those details describe that release, not a guarantee that the SPB183 remains available new.
| Reference and release | What Seiko documents | Availability context |
|---|---|---|
| SPB183 (2020) | 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation; Caliber 6R35; stated 70-hour power reserve; sapphire crystal; 200 m water resistance; bracelet extender; limited to 5,500 pieces. | Limited-edition release with planned November 2020 availability; current stock is not established. |
| SPB237 (2021) | 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation presented on a fabric strap designed and manufactured for diver use. Seiko highlights the protected 4 o’clock crown and the original’s 150 m rating. | Seiko’s cited page documents the 2021 model; it does not establish current availability. |
| SPB257 (2022) | Black Series 1970 Mechanical Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation; Caliber 6R35; 200 m water resistance and sapphire glass; limited to 5,500 pieces. | Limited-edition release with planned March 2022 availability; current stock is not established. |
| SPB153 (UK catalog) | Listed by Seiko UK as the “1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch.” | Seiko’s UK catalog displayed £1,050 in October 2026. A catalog listing and displayed price do not establish stock or pricing in other markets. |
The SPB237 shows that the line’s interpretation is not limited to bracelets: Seiko paired that reference with a fabric strap designed for diving use. That documentation does not establish strap compatibility with other references, including the SPB153.

Which Willard models are limited editions, and what is listed now?
The SPB183 and SPB257 were announced as limited editions of 5,500 pieces each. Their planned 2020 and 2022 availability dates are historical launch details, not proof of current stock. The SPB237 is documented as a 2021 release, but the cited page does not establish that it is currently sold new.
For a current catalog example, Seiko’s UK site lists the SPB153 under “1970 Heritage Diver’s Watch” and displayed a price of £1,050 when accessed in October 2026. This is specifically UK catalog evidence; the listing does not guarantee stock, and it should not be treated as a current price for other regions. Seiko’s cited material does not establish a complete worldwide lineup.

What does the 1970 watch’s diving context tell us?
Seiko’s company history says ISO 6425, including an annex concerning mixed-gas diving watches, was issued in 1996, and that Seiko advocated changes to diver-watch standards. This is Seiko’s account of the standards history; the standard text itself is not assessed here. The 1970 model’s own stated rating remains 150 m, while the cited modern SPB183 and SPB257 specifications are 200 m.
