The Seiko Prospex Dawn Grey series paired two grey-and-orange limited editions: the Turtle SRPD01K1 and Samurai SRPD03K1. Their key differences are the case shape and size, dial texture, movement and calendar, orange bezel span, included straps, and 2018 launch price. Fratello reported that each model was limited to 2,018 pieces for the European market in 2018; that is launch-era information, not an indication of current availability or value.
What is the difference between the Seiko Dawn Grey Turtle and Samurai?
Both watches share the Dawn Grey palette, 200 m water resistance and diver-oriented hardware, but they are not simply two sizes of the same watch. The Turtle has a more rounded case profile, day-date display and orange bezel markings through 20 minutes. The Samurai has a more angular case, a textured dial, date-only display and orange markings through 15 minutes.

The dimensions are published measurements, not a guarantee of wrist fit. Case shape, lug layout and how a bracelet sits can matter as much as diameter, and the cited measurements alone cannot predict how either reference will wear on an individual wrist.
How do the cases, dials and bezels differ?
Turtle SRPD01K1: rounded case, longer orange sector
The Turtle’s 45 mm case is the larger of the two by reported diameter, with a rounded profile associated with the Turtle design. Its grey dial is paired with a dark-grey bezel whose orange dive-time section extends through the first 20 minutes. Fratello’s 2018 review describes LumiBrite hands and hour markers and a Hardlex crystal on this model.

- 200M DIVER'S WATER RESISTANCE: Rated to 200 meters / 660 feet for diving, with a screw-down crown and screw case back.
- STAINLESS-STEEL CASE: 41.7mm stainless-steel case measures 12.3mm thick with a 49.5mm lug-to-lug distance and 20mm lug width.
- HARDLEX CRYSTAL: Durable Hardlex crystal protects the dial, while LumiBrite on the hands, indexes, and bezel improves low-light visibility.
- DIVER-READY DESIGN: Unidirectional rotating bezel and three-fold clasp with secure lock, push-button release, and extender provide practical functionality.
Samurai SRPD03K1: angular case, textured dial
The Samurai measures 43.8 mm across in the period review and has the more angular case design. Its grey “hobnail” dial adds visible texture, while the orange bezel section covers the first 15 minutes. Fratello’s review does not separately establish the Samurai’s crystal material, so the Turtle’s Hardlex specification should not be assumed to apply to both.
Which movements and calendar displays do they use?
The Turtle uses Seiko’s 4R36 movement and displays both the day and date. The Samurai uses the 4R35 and displays the date only. Fratello reported a 41-hour power reserve for the Turtle; the cited launch-era account does not provide a corresponding reserve figure for the Samurai, so no like-for-like reserve comparison is established here.

What do the two watches share?
According to Fratello’s 2018 review, both references have 200 m water resistance, a screw-down crown, a screw-in case back and a unidirectional bezel. Each case back carries an individual limited-edition number, and both watches were presented in a special-edition box. The Turtle came on a steel bracelet and included an additional silicone strap; the reviewer reports no extra silicone strap with the Samurai.
How many Seiko Prospex Dawn Grey watches were made?
Each reference was limited to 2,018 pieces: 2,018 Turtle SRPD01K1 watches and 2,018 Samurai SRPD03K1 watches. Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer described the Turtle series as “limited to 2018 pieces and available in November, on the European market only” in his October 26, 2018 article. Uhren-Schmuck’s 2018 announcement also reports 2,018 units for each model. These figures describe the original European-market launch, not remaining stock.

What were the launch prices, and what do they mean now?
Fratello listed the European launch prices as €530 for the Turtle and €470 for the Samurai, with availability reported for November 2018. Those are historical retail prices. They are not current resale estimates, and they do not establish present-day availability or value for either discontinued reference.

The Turtle offers the day-date display, a longer orange bezel sector and the extra silicone strap reported in the launch package. The Samurai is slightly narrower by the published diameter, has a textured dial and a shorter orange segment. If choosing between them, consider which case shape and calendar layout you prefer rather than treating the diameter difference alone as a fit verdict. Fratello author Robert-Jan Broer said he preferred the Turtle, chiefly for its more restrained, classic design; that is his personal taste, not an objective ranking.
