The Seiko Prospex Field Compass is an automatic field-style watch with a manually rotated compass ring—not a magnetic compass. Its ring uses the sun and the watch’s hands to indicate direction roughly, and Seiko warns not to use it where accuracy is critical. Historical reviews describe the SRPD31K1 and related references as distinctive, robustly specified daily-wear watches; the compass is best treated as an interesting orientation aid, not navigation equipment.
What is the Seiko Prospex Field Compass?
In 2019 and 2020 reviews, Monochrome Watches and Fratello described the Prospex Field Compass as a 43 mm automatic watch with a second crown dedicated to rotating an internal compass ring. The upper crown at 2 o’clock turns the ring; the lower crown at 4 o’clock sets the time and day/date. This is a mechanical, sun-based direction indication: the watch does not detect magnetic north by itself.
The figures below are historical specifications reported in those reviews, not freshly confirmed catalog details. Monochrome reported a 4R36 automatic movement, 41-hour power reserve and 21,600 vibrations per hour in 2019. Fratello reported a 43 mm case, 14.4 mm thickness, Hardlex crystal, 200 m water resistance and 22 mm leather strap in January 2020; Monochrome rounded the thickness to 14 mm. Both reviews identify the 4R36 and 200 m water resistance.
| Reference or detail | What the reviews report |
|---|---|
| SRPD31K1 | Stainless-steel version, identified by Fratello in 2020 and Monochrome in 2019. |
| SRPD35K1 | Black hard-coated version, identified by Fratello in 2020; Monochrome also names it among the variants. |
| SRPD33K1 | Named by Monochrome in its 2019 review as another variant; the cited review details do not establish a full specification comparison with the other references. |
| Caseback | Fratello reports ground-to-air emergency signal codes displayed on the caseback. |
The 200 m rating reported by those reviewers describes water resistance, not compass capability. A previously owned watch should not be assumed to retain its original water resistance without an appropriate inspection.

How does the compass ring work?
The user estimates direction from the sun, levels the watch, and rotates the internal ring with the upper crown. Monochrome’s 2019 review describes the hour-hand method for the Northern Hemisphere: point the hour hand toward the sun, then align “S” with the midpoint of the arc between 12 o’clock and the hour-hand time indication. The ring’s direction markings then provide a rough orientation reference.
Seiko Australia’s 4R34 User Instructions explain compass-bezel methods, including a different hour-hand alignment for the Southern Hemisphere, and warn about limitations at low latitudes: south of the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere and north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. Those are general instructions for compass-bezel models; they are not confirmation of the exact manual or caliber pairing for this 4R36 watch. Follow instructions appropriate to the specific watch in hand.

“The compass is so designed to provide only a rough indication of directions, and should not be used where accuracy is critical.”
That manufacturer warning is decisive: use a dedicated compass or other reliable navigation equipment when direction matters. The watch’s ring is an approximate aid and a distinctive complication, not a substitute for navigation tools.

Is the compass useful enough to choose this watch?
That depends on whether you value the unusual feature as part of the watch’s character. Because the indication depends on the sun and correct use of the hands, it is less straightforward than a dedicated magnetic compass and has the stated latitude limitations. Monochrome also notes that the day/date display is more useful for everyday wear than for navigation.
- Choose it for: the unusual rotating compass ring, a field-watch look, and the combination of automatic timekeeping with day/date.
- Do not choose it as: your primary direction-finding or safety-navigation instrument.
How does it wear, and what are the trade-offs?
The case is 43 mm wide in the historical reviews, but its short lugs are a notable part of its fit. Monochrome described the watch as sitting comfortably; Fratello’s reviewer considered the short-lug case wearable despite its width. Those are reviewer impressions, not a guarantee of fit for every wrist. The watch’s ring and large markers offer useful visual character, though the added markings make the dial busier than a simpler field watch.

Fratello’s reviewer praised the distinctive case, legible dial, bold numerals and LumiBrite, but felt the supplied padded leather straps did not suit the watch and suggested canvas instead. That is a subjective styling judgment. The reviews report a 22 mm strap; confirm the actual watch’s lug and fitting details before buying a replacement.
What did it cost, and is it still available?
The cited prices are launch-era European figures, not current prices. Monochrome reported a EUR 419 Europe RRP in 2019. Fratello reported EUR 429 for the stainless version and EUR 459 for the black-coated version in January 2020. The reviews do not establish current production, regional availability, or today’s new or used market prices.
