The Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT Diver’s SUN019 pairs a body-motion-powered quartz movement with a practical travel-GMT layout: its 24-hour hand can stay on home time while the local hour hand moves independently in one-hour steps. Seiko’s 2014 launch specification lists a 47.5 mm stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal and 200 m diver water resistance. Those figures make it a substantial, technically distinctive diver on paper; they do not establish how it wears or performs on an individual wrist.
What the SUN019 is—and what the numbers establish
Seiko introduced the SUN019 in its 2014 Prospex Kinetic GMT Diver’s release. Its core specifications are:
| Specification | Seiko’s published SUN019 figure or description |
|---|---|
| Movement | Caliber 5M85, Kinetic analog quartz |
| Case diameter | 47.5 mm |
| Case | Stainless steel; double-case design |
| Crystal | Sapphire with anti-reflective coating |
| Water resistance | 200 m diver |
| Power reserve | Approximately six months from a full charge |
| Accuracy | ±15 seconds per month at 5°C to 35°C |
| Bracelet clasp | Three-fold clasp with secure lock, push-button release and extender |
These are original manufacturer specifications, not measurements of a particular review sample. The 47.5 mm diameter signals a large watch by the stated dimension, but diameter alone cannot tell you how the case will sit on your wrist. Seiko describes the double-case construction as drawing on its 1975 diver design, with a side window revealing the inner case and three-dimensional hour markers. The unidirectional bezel is specified to indicate elapsed time up to 60 minutes. Seiko’s 2014 SUN019 release is the source for the launch specifications and design description.
The reference matters. SUN021 and SUN023 are related model names, but their dimensions and materials should not be assumed to match the SUN019 without checking the specific reference.

How the 5M85 Kinetic movement works
The 5M85 is quartz timekeeping powered by electricity generated as the watch moves. Seiko’s manual explains that this electricity is stored in a rechargeable battery; it is not a conventional button cell that needs periodic replacement. The watch charges while worn, but an arm that is not moving does not generate charge.
Seiko specifies approximately six months of operation from a full charge. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee of the same duration for every wearer or charging pattern. A button-operated power-reserve indicator lets the wearer check the stored reserve. The manual’s charging figures are practical guidance rather than universal results: about 250 swings can provide up to one day of reserve, and about 500 swings is a guideline for two days. Actual reserve varies by person.

Using the GMT for travel
The SUN019’s useful travel feature is not just a second time-zone hand; it is the ability to adjust the local hour independently. The 24-hour hand can show home time or another zone, while the ordinary hour hand is moved to local time in one-hour increments. The date changes in coordination with the local-hour adjustment, which helps when crossing a date boundary.
- Set the 24-hour hand to the time zone you want to keep track of. Many travelers use home time for this hand.
- Adjust the local hour hand to the destination’s local time. Move it in one-hour steps without changing the 24-hour hand.
- Check the date after adjustment. The date advances or retreats along with the local-hour setting.
The 24-hour hand also works as a day-or-night reference for the displayed zone. For the exact crown and time-setting procedure, follow the official 5M85 instructions.

Bezel, water resistance and safe use
The rotating bezel marks elapsed time up to 60 minutes, making it useful for tracking a dive interval or another timed activity. Seiko specifies 200 m diver water resistance for the SUN019 in its 2014 release. That rating is not a substitute for dive instruments: the manual says to use the watch only as an auxiliary timepiece alongside proper equipment, including a residual-pressure gauge and depth meter.
- Do not operate the crown while the watch is wet or in water.
- Avoid striking the watch against hard objects such as rocks.
- Use the bezel as an elapsed-time aid, not as a replacement for required diving equipment.
The manufacturer material cited here does not establish a current model-specific certification record or standard edition, so the 200 m specification should not be expanded into a claim of a particular certification.

Accuracy and what a hands-on review can conclude
Seiko lists accuracy of ±15 seconds per month when the watch is between 5°C and 35°C. That is the published specification, not a measured result for an individual SUN019. The available manufacturer information establishes the movement design, stated reserve, GMT operation and construction details; it does not establish a particular wearer’s comfort, observed timekeeping, or water-test performance.
The SUN019’s strongest case is its combination of Kinetic energy storage and an independently adjustable local hour hand, wrapped in a large, purpose-built diver design. Whether the 47.5 mm case suits you is a wrist-fit question, not something its specification sheet can settle. The release and manual document the original model, but they do not establish present-day stock or price.
