The Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT uses the 5M85 movement, which turns the wearer’s movement into electrical energy stored in a rechargeable battery. Its 24-hour hand can track home time while the independently adjustable hour hand shows local time. To operate or service a particular watch correctly, first check its case-back caliber and model reference: Seiko lists separate instructions for the 5M85 Kinetic GMT and Kinetic GMT Divers.
What is the Seiko Prospex Kinetic GMT?
It is an analogue quartz watch family built around Seiko’s Cal. 5M85 Kinetic movement. Rather than relying on a conventional disposable button cell as its energy source, the movement generates electricity from the wearer’s motion and stores it in a rechargeable battery. Seiko describes it as generating the energy to power the watch through body movement. Seiko Cal. 5M85 instructions
“Kinetic” describes how the watch generates electrical power; it does not mean the watch is purely mechanical. The 5M85 combines that power system with quartz timekeeping and a GMT display.
How the GMT hands work
The 5M85 has a 24-hour hand and an hour hand that can be adjusted independently. A practical setup is to leave the 24-hour hand showing home time and adjust the regular hour hand to the destination’s local time. The 24-hour scale also makes it easier to tell whether home time is AM or PM.

Follow the instructions for the exact 5M85 variant before changing the time. The manual lookup separates the Kinetic GMT from the Kinetic GMT Divers, so do not assume every watch in the family has identical controls or specifications. Seiko instruction lookup
How to identify your exact watch
- Read the case back. Find the caliber code and the model/reference information printed or engraved there.
- Match the caliber in Seiko’s lookup. Select the entry for 5M85 Kinetic GMT or 5M85 Kinetic GMT Divers as applicable. Seiko notes that paper manuals have been gradually discontinued from February 2024, making its online lookup the relevant route to instructions. Seiko instruction lookup
- Use the matching manual. Consult it for time setting, charging, and care. Confirm the exact reference before relying on specifications such as water resistance, case material, or bracelet configuration.
How to charge a stopped 5M85
Seiko’s manual says to swing a stopped watch rhythmically at two swings per second. The movement converts that motion into electrical energy. Seiko Service USA’s Cal. 5M85A technical guide states that 250 swings can provide up to one day of power; that is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every watch or its present condition. Does the Kinetic rechargeable battery need replacement?
Seiko says the rechargeable battery does not need periodic replacement in the way a conventional button cell does. That is not the same as saying the watch never needs maintenance. Seiko India recommends an overhaul once every three years for charging watches; this is regional guidance from Seiko India, not a universal interval for every region, model condition, or pattern of use. If the watch stops running, fails to hold its expected charge, or needs repair, ask an authorized Seiko dealer or service provider to assess it. Seiko USA’s general battery support advises contacting an authorized dealer and requesting genuine Seiko batteries, but it does not identify a 5M85 rechargeable-cell part number or provide a model-specific DIY replacement procedure. Do not order a cell or attempt a repair based only on a generic battery listing. Seiko USA battery support

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Item Shape: Round
- View the movement: Mechanical automatic (with hand winding)
- Waterproof depth: 200.0 meters
- Check the case-back caliber and reference against the listing and the applicable Seiko manual.
- Confirm the case, bracelet, and other configuration details from the specific reference; do not infer them from the family name.
- Ask about running condition, charging behavior, and service history. The stated reserve is a manufacturer specification, not proof of an individual used watch’s current performance.
- Check that any included manual or accessories correspond to the watch being sold.
