The Omega Speedmaster Reduced, reference 3510.50.00, is a compelling under-the-radar pick if you want Speedmaster chronograph styling in a smaller, automatic watch. It is not a compact Moonwatch: its case, movement, dial layout and pusher placement all differ from the Speedmaster Professional. Those distinctions are exactly what make the Reduced interesting.
Why the Speedmaster Reduced stands out
The Reduced keeps the black dial, tachymeter bezel and familiar chronograph character associated with the Speedmaster, but in a more compact format. Fratello measures the 3510.50.00 at 38.5 mm across, about 12 mm thick and 44.5 mm lug-to-lug; Omega rounds the diameter to 39 mm. It has a Hesalite crystal and an automatic movement. Fratello’s 2026 overview and Bob’s Watches’ model review both describe the Reduced as a smaller Speedmaster option.
Its appeal is not simply that it is smaller. The 3510.50.00 has a distinct personality: it wears the broad Speedmaster visual vocabulary without being a Professional Moonwatch in miniature. For someone who wants the look and a self-winding chronograph rather than the traditional hand-wound Professional, that is a meaningful difference.
How to tell it apart from a Professional Moonwatch
The Reduced and Professional share design cues, but differ in size and mechanics. The Professional comparator is 42 mm and manually wound, while the Reduced is 38.5 mm by Fratello’s measurement and automatic. On the Reduced, look for “Automatic” on the dial, subdials positioned closer to the dial’s edge, and chronograph pushers that sit slightly higher than the crown. These visible details make the distinction easier than relying on the name alone.

What powers the Reduced
The reference 3510.50.00 uses Omega caliber 3220, an automatic base movement derived from the ETA 2890-A2 paired with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module, according to Fratello. That modular arrangement is important when evaluating a pre-owned example: service history matters, and it is sensible to confirm that a qualified watchmaker is familiar with this architecture. Fratello characterizes module servicing as potentially requiring more patience than servicing the hand-wound Moonwatch movement; that is qualitative guidance, not a universal cost rule or a current service quote.
Buying a discontinued Reduced
The Reduced is discontinued, so buyers are generally looking at pre-owned watches. The sources agree it was introduced in 1988 but differ on the production endpoint: Fratello gives 2010, while Bob’s Watches says production had stopped by 2009. It is more accurate to say it was introduced in 1988 and later discontinued than to claim a definitive final year.

The 3510.50.00 is a common black-dial reference. Bob’s Watches also identifies 3539.50.00 as a later update, noting that it introduced a sapphire crystal in 2006. Check the reference and generation carefully: crystal material and other details vary, and a 3539.50.00 should not be treated as identical to the Hesalite-equipped 3510.50.00.
- Compare case diameter and lug-to-lug measurements with a watch you already find comfortable.
- Confirm the reference, crystal type and service documentation rather than relying on a listing’s generic “Speedmaster Reduced” label.
- Ask about the chronograph’s operation and have the individual watch assessed by a qualified watchmaker before purchase.
- Factor in access to a watchmaker familiar with the modular chronograph movement when considering long-term ownership.
Other lesser-known Speedmasters to consider
Speedmaster Mark II
If you want a more visibly different design, the Mark II is the stronger alternative. Omega’s historical page identifies reference ST 145.014 as a 1969 model with a 41.5 mm stainless-steel case and mineral glass, offered with black, Racing, gilt or gold dial versions. Omega calls it the first redesign of the Speedmaster and describes its barrel-shaped case. The brand’s historical copy says, “This streamlined Speedmaster Mark II signalled the first redesign of OMEGA’s popular chronograph.” Omega’s Mark II history supplies the specifications and context.

Speedmaster Day-Date and Speedmaster 38
Fratello also points to the 39 mm Speedmaster Day-Date, including reference 3520.50.00, as a historical option; unlike the Reduced, it describes the Day-Date’s chronograph as integrated rather than modular. For a smaller, more contemporary-style alternative, it discusses the 38 mm Speedmaster 38 reference 324.30.38.50.01.001, powered by automatic caliber 3330. These are different propositions, so compare movement architecture and fit as well as appearance. Fratello’s guide to other Speedmasters covers these alternatives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should choose the Reduced?
Choose the Reduced if a smaller automatic chronograph is more appealing than the larger, manually wound Professional and you are comfortable buying a discontinued model. If you specifically want the Moonwatch, the Reduced’s similar styling is not a substitute for the Professional’s size and movement. If your priority is a distinctive case shape, look at the Mark II; if it is an integrated chronograph or a different generation, compare the Day-Date and Speedmaster 38.
