Seiko’s current 5 Sports SRPD77 keeps the familiar SKX styling and improves everyday movement convenience, but its official 10-bar rating does not make it an equivalent dive-watch replacement.
What is the Seiko SKX007J?
The SKX007J is a discontinued automatic watch, but the available identification details here come from specialist secondary sources rather than an official archived Seiko specification. Watcharama’s reference page describes an SKX007J example as Japan-made, gives it a Seiko 7S26A movement with 21 jewels, Hardlex crystal, 200 m water resistance and 22 mm lug width, and dates its pictured example to July 2002. Those details identify the page’s example; they do not authenticate a watch being offered for sale.
Even the case diameter is not settled by the cited sources: Watcharama gives 41 mm for its example, while Lug & Leather describes the SKX007 as 42.5 mm. Do not treat either number as a definitive measurement for every SKX007J. The Watcharama page also notes that the bracelet on its pictured example is not original to that watch, a useful reminder that an otherwise plausible listing may include replacement parts. Watcharama’s SKX007J reference page and Lug & Leather’s SKX/SRPD comparison provide the secondary-source descriptions.
Is the SKX007 a real dive watch?
Specialist sources describe the SKX007 as a 200 m ISO 6425 diver with a screw-down crown. That is a reported historical specification, not a claim verified here against an archived Seiko document. By contrast, Seiko’s current SRPD77 product listing specifies 10 bar water resistance. These ratings should not be treated as interchangeable: the SRPD77 is an SKX-style watch, not a specification-equivalent replacement for the SKX007’s reported dive-watch rating.

For an older used SKX007J, a printed rating is not proof of present-day water resistance. Seals age, and the condition or service history of a particular listing is unknown until it is inspected and tested. If you intend to use a watch in water, have its water resistance checked by a qualified watchmaker rather than relying on its model name or a seller’s description.
SKX007J vs. Seiko 5 Sports SRPD77
The SRPD77 is Seiko’s current style-oriented alternative in the 5 Sports SKX series. This comparison separates the SRPD77’s official specifications from the SKX007J details reported by a secondary reference page; the historical model figures are not independently confirmed here by an archived Seiko specification.

Seiko’s official SRPD77 product listing provides its current specifications. The SRPD77’s 4R36 adds hand-winding and stop-seconds—also called hacking, which lets the seconds hand stop when setting the time. Hodinkee’s review contrasts those functions with the SKX’s 7S26, which does not hand-wind or hack. That makes the newer movement more convenient for setting and daily use, while not changing the water-resistance distinction. Hodinkee’s SRPD review covers that movement comparison and the line’s non-screw-down crown.

It can be, if you value the SKX’s reported dive-watch specification and are comfortable buying an older discontinued watch whose condition and originality need checking. It is less compelling if you mainly want the styling, a more convenient movement or a watch whose current specifications can be confirmed directly through Seiko: the SRPD77 provides those conveniences, but gives up the SKX007’s reported 200 m rating.

Before buying a specific SKX007J listing, check:
- Identity and originality: Ask for clear photos and details of the case, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet and movement. A model name or seller claim alone does not establish authenticity, and replacement components can affect originality.
- Condition and service: Ask for service history and whether the watch has been tested for water resistance. A qualified watchmaker can assess an older automatic’s condition.
- Operation: Check that the crown, day/date setting and bezel operate as expected, and ask about any known faults. The 7S26 does not offer manual winding or hacking, so do not mistake those absent functions for a defect.
- Fit and accessories: A 22 mm strap is a plausible search for an SKX007J, but confirm the exact watch, spring bars and strap or clasp hardware before ordering. Listings and compatibility can vary.
The evidence cited here does not establish current used-market prices or the condition of any particular listing, so evaluate the individual watch rather than assuming that every SKX007J is original, serviced or water-ready.
What replaced the Seiko SKX?
The SRPD line is the closest current Seiko option in this comparison for the SKX look, and the SRPD77 is listed by Seiko in its 5 Sports SKX series. It is not a direct capability replacement: its official specification is 10 bar, whereas specialist sources describe the discontinued SKX007 as a 200 m ISO diver. If actual 200 m ISO dive capability is the priority, Lug & Leather points readers toward the Prospex Turtle family; confirm the specifications of a specific current reference with Seiko before choosing it.
