Its 44.8 mm diameter and 15.7 mm thickness make it a substantial watch, while its 1,100-piece production run and €7,000 launch price place it firmly in the high-end, enthusiast-focused category. Those launch details date to 2020; they do not establish present availability or resale value.
What is the Seiko SLA039J1?
The SLA039J1 belongs to the Prospex Sea line and recreates Seiko’s 1968 Professional Diver’s 300m. Seiko identifies the original as its first high-beat diver, with a one-piece case, unidirectional bezel and screw-down crown. The modern watch retains that core dive-watch identity while upgrading the case for the maker’s saturation-diving designation.
Seiko announced the SLA039J1 in 2020 as one of three 55th-anniversary re-creations, limited to 1,100 pieces and scheduled to be available in August 2020. These are historical launch facts, not confirmation that a new or unworn example can still be bought from a retailer.
Design, materials and wrist fit
The watch’s visual and technical centerpiece is its one-piece case, made from Ever-Brilliant Steel. Seiko describes this steel as more corrosion-resistant than steel used in most high-end watches; that is the manufacturer’s material claim, rather than an independent comparative test. The case is paired with a dual-curved sapphire crystal whose anti-reflective coating is on the inner surface.

Seiko Design Center reports that the SLA039 won the iF DESIGN AWARD 2021 in the Product Discipline, Watches/Jewelry category. The award recognizes the design; it does not measure durability or performance. The organization said the 2021 competition received close to 10,000 entries from more than 50 nations, figures describing the competition overall rather than this model.
Dimensions and strap
At 44.8 mm across, 15.7 mm thick and 51.4 mm lug-to-lug, the SLA039J1 has a broad, tall profile. Those numbers make wrist fit a priority: the case may feel imposing, especially on smaller wrists or under a close-fitting cuff. Seiko lists a silicone strap and a 19 mm distance between the lugs. That measurement alone does not guarantee that any 19 mm aftermarket strap will fit correctly; check the strap shape, thickness, spring-bar access and clearance against the case.

Movement and timekeeping
The SLA039J1 uses Seiko Caliber 8L55, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Seiko lists 36,000 vibrations per hour (10 beats per second), 37 jewels, a date display, stop-seconds and an approximate 55-hour power reserve. The high beat rate is a notable technical feature, while the reserve is the maker’s stated figure rather than a guarantee for every watch in use.
Seiko’s published precision specification is +15 to -10 seconds per day. This is the manufacturer’s stated tolerance, not a result of an independent timing test of the model or a particular example. Actual timekeeping can vary by watch condition, regulation, wear and position.

Is the SLA039J1 a 300 m saturation diver?
Seiko specifies water resistance of 300 m / 1,000 ft for saturation diving, and lists a screw-down crown and unidirectional rotating bezel. The company says the original 1968 model was an air diver and that the re-creation was upgraded for saturation diving through its resilient one-piece case structure. That describes the maker’s design and rating; it is not independent verification of a used watch’s present condition.
A model specification cannot establish that an individual second-hand SLA039J1 is safe to dive with. Seals age, servicing history matters and the condition of a particular watch is unknown without inspection and pressure testing. Anyone intending to dive with a pre-owned example should have it assessed by a qualified watchmaker or service center first. Seiko also lists LumiBrite on the hands, indices and bezel, and a serial number engraved on the case back.

Price and availability
Monochrome Watches reported a launch price of €7,000 in its April 20, 2020 hands-on review. That is a dated launch figure, not a current quote or valuation. Because the SLA039J1 was a limited edition announced for August 2020, present prices and availability depend on the specific market and listing; no current transaction price can be inferred from the launch price or the edition size.
For a current purchase, compare verified listings in the same region and distinguish seller asking prices from completed sales. Check the seller’s standing, included box and papers, service documentation, return terms and whether the watch has been pressure-tested if diving use is intended. A listing’s description does not replace an inspection of the watch’s condition.

Who should consider the SLA039J1?
The SLA039J1 makes most sense for a collector who specifically values Seiko’s 1968 diver heritage, the one-piece-case construction, the high-beat 8L55 movement and the limited-edition design. It is less compelling as a purely practical choice if the priority is a smaller case, an easy-to-source current-production watch or a purchase based on predictable current pricing.
Seiko’s specifications establish the movement, dimensions and dive rating, while the award and limited production add context rather than proof of superior performance or future value. When comparing alternatives, useful criteria are wrist fit, movement rate and stated reserve, maker’s accuracy tolerance, water-resistance designation, case construction, material and finishing, service support, and a verified market price in the buyer’s region.
