Seiko’s Prospex SPB239 and SPB237 pair two diver designs from the brand’s history with Japanese Seichu-braided fabric straps. The SPB239 is the 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation, with a brown dial and bezel; the SPB237 is the 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation, with a textured gray dial. Seiko supplied each with a second, differently colored fabric strap designed to change without tools.
Which Seiko models are the 1965 and 1970 fabric-strap divers?
The references are SPB239 for the 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation and SPB237 for the 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation. Seiko says their designs and specifications follow modern reinterpretations introduced the preceding year for the 55th anniversary of its first diver’s watch. The company’s official product-history page identifies the models and describes their fabric straps.
| Reference | Historical design | Dial and bezel treatment |
|---|---|---|
| SPB239 | 1965 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation | Brown dial and bezel |
| SPB237 | 1970 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation | Textured gray dial |
That comparison is about lineage and appearance. The cited Seiko page does not establish a performance advantage of one modern reference over the other.
What is distinctive about the fabric straps?
Seichu braiding and design
Seiko says the straps use Seichu, a traditional Japanese braiding technique. The company relates their textile appearance to obijime, the decorative cord used to hold a kimono sash, and describes the straps as flexible and air permeable. It also says metal parts give them a strong, solid form. These are Seiko’s descriptions of its product, rather than independent assessments.

Strength and intended use
Seiko reports that the straps have tensile strength nearly four times that of its regular fabric straps, based on research conducted by Seiko. The product page does not provide a test protocol, independent validation, or a third-party standard for that comparison. Seiko also says the straps are designed for divers’ use and that their strength and resistance to sunlight-related degradation meet the demands of its diver’s watches; those claims likewise come from the manufacturer.
Included alternate strap
Each watch is offered with a second fabric strap in a different color. Seiko says its strap structure allows the included straps to be changed without tools. The page does not give a standalone replacement-strap part number or establish compatibility with aftermarket straps, so check the exact watch and strap fit before buying a separate one.

What do the original 1965 and 1970 watches contribute?
The modern references draw on different historical Seiko divers. Seiko recounts that the original 1965 watch used an automatic mechanical caliber and had 150m water resistance. It describes the original 1970 model as having an asymmetrical extension that protected the crown, luminous hands and indexes, and 150m water resistance. These are specifications and design details of the historical watches, not specifications for SPB239 or SPB237.
Seiko also recounts that Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura wore the original 1970 watch during a 12,000km solo dog-sled journey from Greenland to Alaska between 1974 and 1976. That expedition is part of the 1970 model’s history; it does not establish a modern watch’s performance.

Are these the same as Seiko’s later 1965 Heritage Diver models?
No. SPB239 and SPB237 are the older fabric-strap models discussed here. Seiko’s Australia page describes a later group of 1965 Heritage Diver references—SPB451, SPB453, and SPB455—and says a special edition in that group includes an additional strap made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. That is a different product generation and strap description, not another name for SPB239’s Seichu strap. See Seiko Australia’s page for the later 1965 Heritage models.
