This matchup is the automatic Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ037J1 against the Tissot Heritage 1973 T124.427.16.031.01—not a solar Speedtimer or a different Tissot reference. The Seiko takes a more modern, restrained approach to its racing-watch heritage; the Tissot leans harder into 1970s chronograph styling. Choose by which design language you want on your wrist, then weigh the Tissot’s published specifications against the Seiko details available for this exact reference.

What the Seiko’s movement story does—and does not—tell you
The matchup article identifies the SRQ037J1 as an automatic chronograph powered by Seiko caliber 8R46. Seiko’s current mechanical Speedtimer page describes column wheel and vertical clutch mechanisms across the 8R mechanical chronograph family, attributing precision and durability benefits to that architecture. Seiko also calls the 8R series its most advanced automatic chronograph movement family for mechanical watches. These are Seiko’s family-level descriptions; they should not be read as a fresh specification sheet for the exact SRQ037J1.
There is a broader historical thread behind the Speedtimer name. Seiko says its 1969 Speedtimer, powered by caliber 6139, was the world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. That is Seiko’s own historical claim. Fratello’s account notes that the first caliber 6139 Speedtimers were available in Japan in May 1969 and discusses other contemporaneous contenders. Seiko’s Speedtimer history; Fratello’s comparison
How close are they in size?
The nominal diameters are nearly identical: 42.5 mm for the Seiko, as reported in Fratello’s 2021 article, and 43 mm for the Tissot’s current US listing. Tissot lists its case thickness as 14.8 mm. Diameter alone cannot predict how either watch will wear; case shape and geometry also matter, and the cited sources do not establish a directly comparable thickness for the Seiko reference.

Water resistance and strap replacement
Tissot lists the Heritage 1973 at 100 m / 330 ft water resistance and gives it a 22 mm lug width. Those are useful concrete figures when considering daily wear or a replacement strap. The consulted material does not establish water resistance or lug width for the exact SRQ037J1, so it is not possible to declare a specification winner across both watches on those points. Check the exact reference documentation and local version before choosing a replacement strap; a nominal width alone does not confirm fit.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Seiko for modern mechanics and restrained vintage cues
The SRQ037J1 is the stronger fit if you want a contemporary-looking chronograph with a connection to Seiko’s automatic-chronograph history rather than a direct visual reprise of a 1970s design. Its 8R46 identification and the 8R family’s column-wheel, vertical-clutch architecture give the comparison a technical angle, while current price and stock for this exact reference are not established here.

Choose the Tissot for a more overtly retro racing look
The Heritage 1973 is the more direct choice if the appeal is a pronounced 1970s racing-chronograph look. Tissot ties the model to motor racing and the Kessel Classics racing team. Its current US page presents a substantial set of practical specifications, including a 43 mm case, 14.8 mm thickness, 65-hour reserve, 100 m water resistance and 22 mm lug width.

Fratello described the pictured Tissot edition as limited to 1,973 pieces, and Tissot’s current US page also identifies a 1,973-piece limited edition. Confirm the precise variant and market before assuming that edition status applies to every Heritage 1973 reference. The same care applies to price: Fratello’s €2,130 figure is from its November 2021 article and is historical, while the US listing showed $2,575 on October 8, 2026. These figures refer to different dates and markets, not a like-for-like current price comparison.
