The Seiko Prospex SRPD31K1 is an automatic field-style watch with a rotating compass ring—not a built-in magnetic compass. Seiko lists a 43 mm stainless-steel case, 4R36 movement, approximately 41-hour power reserve and 20 bar water resistance. Its compass feature uses the sun and hour hand to estimate direction, and the cited instructions describe it for the Northern Hemisphere. Prices shown on Seiko’s regional pages differ, so there is no single worldwide price.
What the SRPD31K1 is
Seiko’s regional product pages identify the watch as the Prospex SRPD31; the UK page shows SRPD31K1 imagery. It combines an automatic movement, day-date display and rotating inner compass ring in a stainless-steel case with a cow-leather band. It is a specific model, not the closely related SRPD33K1 or SRPD35K1 discussed in some launch coverage. Seiko’s UK product page is the manufacturer reference for the specifications below.
Specifications and wearing considerations
| Specification | Seiko listing |
|---|---|
| Movement | Caliber 4R36, automatic with manual winding; 24 jewels; stop-second function |
| Power reserve | Approximately 41 hours |
| Display | Day and date |
| Case | Stainless steel; 43.0 mm diameter; 14.4 mm thickness |
| Crystal | Curved Hardlex |
| Band and lug spacing | Cow leather; 22 mm lug spacing |
| Water resistance | 20 bar, as specified by Seiko |
| Weight | 82.0 g |
| Additional feature | Rotating compass inner ring |
The 43 mm diameter and 14.4 mm thickness are useful fit checks before buying, while the 22 mm lug spacing matters if you plan to replace the band. Fratello describes the lugs as short, an editorial observation rather than a guarantee of fit on every wrist. The published dimensions do not establish how the watch will feel on your wrist; try it on if possible. Seiko’s 20 bar figure is a manufacturer rating, not a description of every activity for which the watch is suitable.
How the compass ring works—and what it cannot do
The ring is not magnetic and does not independently find north. Monochrome’s 26 September 2019 review describes using the hour hand and sun to get an approximate direction in the Northern Hemisphere. Treat it as an analog orientation aid, not a precision navigation instrument or a substitute for a map, magnetic compass or navigation device.

The review’s reproduced manual guidance says to hold the dial level, point the hour hand toward the sun, then rotate the inner ring until “S” sits midway between 12 and the hour-hand time indication. The relevant side of that arc changes between morning and afternoon. Because these are reproduced directions rather than the full current manual, consult the downloadable manual linked from Seiko’s product page for the complete operating instructions before relying on the feature.

Who should consider it
- It may suit someone who wants an automatic field-style watch with day-date display and a compass-themed ring, provided they understand that the ring gives only an approximate sun-based indication.
- Its case dimensions, leather band and 22 mm lug spacing are practical considerations for fit and strap replacement; verify any replacement strap’s attachment dimensions before ordering.
- If dependable navigation is the priority, choose a dedicated navigation tool rather than relying on this watch’s compass feature.
Review verdict
The SRPD31K1’s appeal is a straightforward mechanical specification set paired with a distinctive, manually oriented compass ring. The main buying distinction is whether that ring’s limited, approximate function matches your expectations. Check fit and current local pricing before purchase; the listed regional prices and historical launch figures are not interchangeable.
