The Seiko Prospex SRPL81K JAWS 50th Anniversary is a real, limited-edition automatic dive watch—not merely a movie-logo novelty. Seiko produced 5,000 examples worldwide, combining a JAWS-specific dial and caseback with a 200-meter diver’s rating, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, and 4R36 automatic movement. The principal official international reference is SRPL81; SRPL81K1 and Japan’s SBDY137 are regional identifiers worth checking when comparing listings.

Short answer: The Seiko Prospex SRPL81K—also shown regionally as SRPL81K1 and identified in Japanese materials as SBDY137—is a legitimate 5,000-piece limited-edition automatic dive watch commemorating the 50th anniversary of JAWS. It combines a film-specific design with serious everyday specifications: a 200-meter diver’s rating, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, Seiko 4R36 automatic movement, and a 45 mm stainless-steel case.

The model is commonly searched as the Seiko Prospex SRPL81K JAWS 50th Anniversary, but SRPL81 is the principal identifier used by Seiko USA and several international materials. Buyers should compare the reference printed on the watch, packaging, warranty card, and seller listing before purchasing.

What is the Seiko Prospex SRPL81?

The SRPL81 is a Prospex diver created for the 50th anniversary of the 1975 film JAWS. This is not simply a blue Seiko diver with a movie logo added to the dial. The design incorporates several visual references to the film:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A blue-and-white gradient dial evokes the sea.
  • The dial has a textured surface and a shark silhouette that appears from certain viewing angles.
  • The JAWS logo is printed at 6 o’clock.
  • The caseback depicts the Orca boat and a shark dorsal fin.
  • The caseback carries the limited-edition wording and an individual serial number.
  • A special anniversary box and printed cushion are included with the presentation.

The result is a watch aimed at two overlapping audiences: divers and Seiko enthusiasts who want a capable Prospex platform, and JAWS collectors who value the film-specific artwork and numbered production.

Movement: Seiko 4R36 automatic

The SRPL81 uses Seiko’s caliber 4R36, an automatically wound movement that can also be wound by hand. Its approximately 41-hour power reserve is practical for normal daily wear, although the watch may stop if it is left off the wrist for longer than that period.

The movement provides a stop-seconds function, allowing the seconds hand to stop when the crown is pulled to the appropriate position for more precise setting. It also drives the day/date display. On the U.S. specification, the day can be displayed in English or Kanji.

The 4R36 is an important part of the watch’s value proposition: it is a functional, serviceable automatic movement rather than a purely decorative choice. However, buyers should not assume that every example will achieve identical timekeeping performance. Seiko’s published specifications do not establish the accuracy of a particular watch, and a mechanical watch’s rate can vary with position, use, temperature, and its service history.

Design details that make it a JAWS watch

Gradient ocean dial

The dial transitions through blue and white tones to suggest the surface and depth of the ocean. Its texture gives the dial more visual interest than a flat color field, while the shark silhouette is designed to appear depending on the angle of view. That hidden or semi-hidden motif is more restrained than printing a large shark across the dial, so the watch can still function as a conventional diver at a glance.

JAWS branding

The JAWS logo at 6 o’clock makes the film connection immediately identifiable. It is paired with the shark motif rather than replacing the standard Prospex layout, preserving the practical hour markers, hands, and dive bezel.

  • Until 6:00 side longest hole ----- about 110mm
  • Buckle width --- 20mm 12:00 side buckle tip to ---- about 98mm

Orca caseback

The caseback is the more overt collector detail. It depicts the Orca boat and a shark dorsal fin, then adds the limited-edition wording and an individual serial number. Because the artwork is on the caseback, it does not interfere with legibility during normal wear.

Presentation box

The special anniversary box and printed cushion are part of the package. Buyers interested in the collectible aspect should confirm that the box, cushion, warranty documentation, and other original accessories are included—particularly when purchasing a pre-owned or marketplace example.

How large does the SRPL81 wear?

This is a substantial watch. Its 45.0 mm diameter, 47.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement, 13.2 mm thickness, and 128-gram listed weight all matter more than diameter alone when assessing fit.

  • 45 mm diameter: creates a large visual presence and may extend beyond the comfortable proportions of smaller wrists.
  • 47.7 mm lug-to-lug: is the key measurement for judging whether the lugs may overhang the wrist.
  • 13.2 mm thickness: gives the watch noticeable height under a sleeve or jacket cuff.
  • 128 grams: makes it meaningfully heavier than many compact everyday watches.

These measurements support a clear conclusion: the SRPL81 is better suited to buyers who intentionally want a large diver than to someone searching for a discreet or compact watch. That does not prove whether it will be comfortable on a particular wrist; comfort depends on wrist shape, strap tension, clothing, and personal preference, and was not independently tested here.

Is the SRPL81 a real dive watch?

On paper, it has the equipment expected from a serious Prospex diver: 200-meter water resistance, a screw-down crown, a unidirectional rotating bezel, sapphire crystal, LumiBrite, and a silicone strap. Seiko describes the water resistance as diver’s water resistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel display are especially notable at this price level. Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant compared with mineral crystal, while the ceramic bezel insert is intended to provide a durable display surface. The bezel’s unidirectional design is appropriate for elapsed-time measurement during diving because accidental rotation can only reduce the displayed remaining time rather than extend it.

Those features do not eliminate the need for normal dive-watch precautions. A water-resistance rating is not a permanent guarantee; seals age, crowns must be fully secured, and a watch that has been opened or damaged should be inspected before water use. The published specification is not a substitute for independent depth testing of an individual watch.

Reference confusion: SRPL81, SRPL81K1, SRPL81K, or SBDY137?

Several reference forms appear in connection with this release:

  • SRPL81: the principal international and U.S. model identifier used in official Seiko materials.
  • SRPL81K1: a regional product-page designation.
  • SRPL81K: a useful search variant and the wording commonly used for this topic.
  • SBDY137: the reference used for the Japanese domestic version in the launch materials.

These labels should not automatically be treated as separate watches—or assumed to be identical in every market—without checking the actual case and movement markings, packaging, language configuration, warranty documents, and intended sales region. Regional reference suffixes can affect documentation and distribution even when the underlying design is closely related.

Price, production limit, and availability

Seiko announced the watch as a 5,000-piece worldwide limited edition. The Japanese launch announcement dated June 20, 2025, stated that it would go on sale in Japan on July 11, 2025, at a suggested retail price of ¥110,000 including tax, with 700 pieces allocated to Japan. Seiko USA lists the model at $795.

These are region-specific official list or launch prices, not a statement of the watch’s current market price. Availability, authorized distribution, seller identity, warranty coverage, and resale pricing can change. Anyone buying now should verify those details at the point of purchase rather than relying on the launch price.

The 5,000-piece limit and the film connection support collector interest, but they do not establish a guaranteed premium or investment return. Limited production can make a watch desirable without ensuring future appreciation. Avoid paying a speculative markup unless the condition, completeness, provenance, and seller reputation justify it to you independently of any investment expectation.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the reference. Check whether the listing identifies the watch as SRPL81, SRPL81K1, or the Japanese SBDY137, and compare that information with the case and warranty documents.
  2. Check the seller. Verify the seller’s identity, return policy, warranty terms, and reputation. A marketplace listing alone does not establish authorized-dealer status.
  3. Confirm what is included. For a collector purchase, look for the special anniversary box, printed cushion, warranty documentation, and original strap.
  4. Inspect the caseback. The film-specific Orca and shark artwork, limited-edition wording, and individual serial number are useful authenticity clues.
  5. Inspect the dial and bezel. Look for the JAWS branding, gradient and textured dial, shark motif, correct hands and markers, and the ceramic bezel display.
  6. Check condition and service history. On a pre-owned example, ask whether the crown, crystal, bezel, strap, and caseback have been damaged or replaced.
  7. Do not rely on the serial number alone. The serial number is an important documented feature, but this research did not establish a public counterfeit database or serial-number lookup service for the model. For a high-value purchase, an authorized dealer or qualified watch professional remains the safer route.

Useful accessories for the SRPL81

22 mm replacement strap

The watch has 22 mm lugs, so a 22mm silicone dive watch strap is a legitimate accessory category. A replacement strap can be useful if the original is worn, if a different blue shade is preferred, or if the owner wants a spare for travel.

Compatibility must be checked at the individual-product level. Confirm the spring-bar fit, buckle hardware, strap thickness, taper, and intended water use. A generic 22 mm strap is not automatically a perfect fit, and an aftermarket strap should not be assumed to preserve Seiko’s original dive specification or exact appearance.

Travel case or storage box

A padded watch travel case or collector storage box is another reasonable optional purchase. It can protect the watch when the original anniversary packaging is being kept safely at home. This is general collector equipment, not an accessory Seiko requires for the watch to function, and it does not make the watch waterproof or improve its mechanical performance.

JAWS merchandise for collectors

The Seiko is part of a broader JAWS anniversary merchandise ecosystem. Universal Parks Shop has listed an official JAWS collection containing items such as shirts, towels, mugs, pins, blankets, bags, and other physical merchandise, including products labeled for the 50th anniversary.

These are separate collector or gift options; they are not included with the Seiko watch. Availability and product selection can change, so shoppers should confirm that an item is still offered and is officially licensed before buying.

Should you buy the Seiko Prospex SRPL81?

Buy it if you want a large, technically equipped Seiko diver and specifically value the JAWS connection, numbered production, special caseback, and anniversary packaging. The sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert, 200-meter rating, automatic movement, and manual-winding capability make it more than a purely decorative movie tie-in.

Think twice if you want a compact watch, dislike prominent franchise branding, expect a predictable investment return, or are choosing it mainly because of a low marketplace price without verifying the seller and included materials.

The strongest reason to buy this model is the combination of a recognizable Prospex tool-watch foundation and unusually specific film design. The strongest reason not to buy it is its size: at 45 mm wide and nearly 48 mm lug-to-lug, it is not a neutral fit for every wrist.

Frequently Asked Questions
