What is the SPB429J?
Seiko announced the SPB429J on 5 October 2023 as a Prospex Australasian exclusive, with production limited to 1,000 pieces. Seiko’s launch announcement describes it as “a captivating design inspired by the iconic beaches of the Whitsundays.” Seiko’s announcement said the watch would be available from October 2023 through Seiko boutiques and select retailers across Australia.
That launch timing and region describe the original release, not its current stock status. A David Jones product page retrieved for this article showed the watch out of stock, but that single listing does not establish availability across other sellers or markets. David Jones listing.
What makes the Whitsunday edition distinctive?
Seiko’s design story draws on the Whitsundays, including Whitehaven Beach. The dial’s gradation represents calm turquoise water; the gold seconds hand evokes sunlit shores; green bezel details reference native bushland; and blue accents connect the design to the Coral Sea. Those are Seiko’s stated inspirations, rather than separate material or performance specifications.

Why the stated case diameter is uncertain
Seiko’s announcement is internally inconsistent: the descriptive text gives 45.0 mm, while the specification block gives 40.5 mm. A Selected Jewellery Australia listing and a review description each report 45 mm, which supports that figure as a secondary-source listing, but does not erase the conflict in Seiko’s official document. If case size affects your buying decision, ask the seller to confirm the measurement for the exact SPB429J and, where possible, try it on or check a verified product record. Do not assume the 40.5 mm figure is correct simply because it appears in the specification block, or treat 45 mm as settled solely because multiple secondary descriptions use it. A dependable lug-to-lug measurement is not established in the cited material either, so diameter alone cannot tell you how the watch will sit on your wrist.
What to know about the included straps
The original configuration includes the steel bracelet and additional white and blue silicone straps, so an aftermarket strap is not needed to recreate the launch package. Selected Jewellery Australia reports 20 mm lug spacing, a useful starting point for strap research, but that listing does not prove every nominally 20 mm strap will fit correctly.
