What was Seiko’s Prospex The Black Series?
Seiko Watch Corporation announced the collection on January 16, 2020, with releases in Japan and overseas scheduled from January through March. The three watches were the Marinemaster Professional SBDX033 (international reference SLA035J1), the Diver Scuba SBDC095 (SPB125J1), and the solar chronograph Diver Scuba SBDL065 (SSC761J1). The references differ by market, so listings may use either name.
The unifying idea was the dramatic, mysterious world of the nighttime ocean. Seiko described red as a color that becomes difficult to see at depth and said the SBDX033’s red seconds-hand accent was intended to keep attention on the minute hand and indices. On the two air-diving models, Seiko said the orange minute hand evoked a night diver’s light and that orange Lumibrite indices supported legibility in darkness. These are the company’s design explanations, not independent performance findings.

What distinguishes each model?
SBDX033 / SLA035J1: the 300 m saturation diver
The largest and most specialized of the trio, the SBDX033 has a 44.3 mm case diameter excluding the crown and a 15.4 mm thickness. Its stated specifications include a black hard-coated stainless-steel case, ceramic bezel display, reinforced silicone strap, sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating, and 300 m saturation-diving water resistance. The automatic caliber 8L35 has an approximately 50-hour power reserve.
Its combination of greater stated depth rating and saturation-diving classification sets it apart from the two Diver Scuba air-diving models. The edition was limited to 600 pieces globally.

SBDC095 / SPB125J1: automatic air-diving model
The SBDC095 measures 45.0 mm across excluding the crown and 12.9 mm thick. It has a black hard-coated stainless-steel case, reinforced silicone strap, sapphire crystal, and 200 m air-diving water resistance. Its mechanical automatic caliber 6R35 is specified with an approximately 70-hour power reserve. Seiko announced a global limit of 7,000 pieces.
SBDL065 / SSC761J1: solar chronograph air-diving model
The SBDL065 measures 44.5 mm across excluding the crown and 13.7 mm thick. Its listed features include a black hard-coated stainless-steel case, reinforced silicone strap, sapphire crystal, and 200 m air-diving water resistance. Unlike the other two, it uses the V192 solar chronograph caliber rather than an automatic mechanical movement. Seiko set its global limited quantity at 3,500 pieces.

Which Black Series models are automatic?
The SBDX033/SLA035J1 and SBDC095/SPB125J1 are automatic mechanical watches, using calibers 8L35 and 6R35 respectively. The SBDL065/SSC761J1 is a solar chronograph with caliber V192. The automatic models therefore differ not only in movement but also in diving category: the Marinemaster is rated for 300 m saturation diving, while the Diver Scuba is rated for 200 m air diving.
What shared specifications did Seiko list?
The 2020 Japanese release lists a unidirectional rotating bezel and screw-lock crown among shared specifications. It also lists JIS type 1 magnetic resistance and a one-year manufacturer warranty for that Japanese release; those warranty terms should not be assumed to apply in other regions. Each model is listed with a reinforced silicone strap. The cited product information does not establish strap width or aftermarket strap compatibility, so fit should be checked against the exact reference before buying a replacement.

Are the 2020 Black Series watches still available?
Seiko’s current official product page labels these original models “No longer available.” That status does not establish whether any independent seller has a particular watch in stock. For a pre-owned or remaining-stock listing, confirm the reference on the watch and paperwork, seller identity, condition, included accessories, and the terms of any regional warranty. The 2020 Japan suggested retail prices above are not evidence of today’s market value.
For reference matching, search either market name: SBDX033 or SLA035J1, SBDC095 or SPB125J1, and SBDL065 or SSC761J1. Verify that a listing’s specific watch matches the reference you intend to buy; a Black Series colorway or collection name alone is not enough to establish model identity.
