In Robert-Jan Broer’s 2015 Fratello review, its key upgrades over the standard SBDC001 are a sapphire crystal and Dia-Shield case treatment; the reviewer’s main reservation is the bracelet clasp.
What does “50th Anniversary” mean on the SBDC027?
The anniversary refers to Seiko’s professional dive watches, which the review says began in 1965. It does not mark 50 years of the Sumo model. Robert-Jan Broer’s Fratello Watches review, published April 17, 2015, describes the SBDC027 as a limited edition of 2,000 pieces. That is a historical production figure, not an indication of present availability. Read the Fratello review.
Broer’s wording is explicit: “Seiko celebrates the 50th anniversary of their professional diving watches, introduced in 1965 (click here for our review on the first professional Seiko divers watch).” This is the reviewer’s description, not a quotation from Seiko.
What changed from the standard SBDC001?
The SBDC027 keeps the basic Sumo platform, but Broer identifies several differences from the SBDC001. The two most consequential are the sapphire crystal, replacing Hardlex, and Dia-Shield treatment on the case. The review also notes revised hands, square markers instead of larger round markers, removal of the “Scuba” dial text, and a glossy bezel with a more restrained numeral font.

Broer regarded the sapphire crystal as the largest practical plus and described the case finishing positively. His favorable view of the revised dial and bezel is an aesthetic judgment, so whether those changes improve the design is a matter of taste.

How does the review assess the bracelet and wearability?
The bracelet is the reviewer’s clearest criticism. Broer judged its clasp not up to the standard of Swiss competitors and identified the bracelet as the watch’s primary concern. That is his comparative assessment, not a result from a standardized test.
The reported 45 mm diameter and 13 mm thickness make this a substantial watch on paper. The review does not provide wrist measurements or a fit test, so those dimensions alone cannot establish how it will wear on a particular person. If you are considering an example, trying it on is more informative than relying on diameter alone.

What did it cost, and is that still useful?
Broer reported a 2015 retail price of €999 including taxes for the SBDC027 and approximately €650 for standard Sumo models at that time. He attributed the premium to the sapphire crystal and case treatment. These are historical prices only; they do not establish current market value, current stock, or what a particular pre-owned example should cost.
What to check when buying a pre-owned SBDC027
A 2015 review cannot verify the condition or service history of an individual watch. Before buying, assess the actual example and account for the needs of a mechanical watch rather than assuming that its limited-edition status guarantees condition.

- Inspect the case, crystal, bezel, bracelet, and clasp in person or through detailed, clear photographs.
- Ask whether the 6R15 has been serviced and request documentation if available. The review mentions periodic servicing but gives no manufacturer interval, so it does not support a precise schedule.
- Consider an independent inspection for a pre-owned example if its condition or operation is uncertain.
- If replacing the bracelet with a strap, use the reported 20 mm lug width as a starting point and verify the exact strap’s fit before purchase. Broer reported that a black Marinemaster 300 polyurethane strap fit his watch; that observation does not establish current stock or universal compatibility.
Is the SBDC027 worth seeking out?
The SBDC027’s appeal, based on the 2015 review, is specific: it adds sapphire and Dia-Shield to the Sumo platform and changes the hands, markers, dial text, and bezel presentation. The trade-off highlighted by Broer is a bracelet clasp he found disappointing. Whether it is worth pursuing depends on how much those upgrades matter to you and the condition and price of the particular watch; the historical review cannot settle today’s value or availability.
