The Seiko SLA037J1 is a limited-edition Prospex re-creation of Seiko’s 1965 diver, released for the 55th anniversary of the company’s first diver’s watch. Seiko specified an 8L55 automatic movement, 200 m diver’s water resistance and a production run of 1,100 pieces. Its official release information dates availability to July 2020, so that release date does not establish current stock.
What is the Seiko SLA037J1?
The SLA037J1 is Seiko’s modern interpretation of its first diver’s watch, introduced in 1965. Seiko describes the original as Japan’s first diver’s watch; it used an automatic mechanical movement and was rated to 150 m. The company says members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition used the original from 1966 to 1969. Seiko’s 55th-anniversary history presents the SLA037J1 as the 1965 re-creation, distinct from its anniversary models based on the 1968 and 1975 divers.
The modern watch retains a case design Seiko calls virtually identical to the original, while its diameter is 1.9 mm larger. It updates the specification with a box-shaped sapphire crystal and 200 m diver’s water resistance. Seiko also notes a super-hard coating for scratch protection and a dolphin emblem on the case back. These details make it a heritage re-creation rather than a specification-for-specification reproduction.

Seiko announced a limited edition of 1,100 pieces and said the SLA037J1 would be available in July 2020. Those are historical release details, not evidence that an example is currently for sale. Seiko’s 2020 US announcement gave an approximate US recommended retail price of $6,300 at launch. That figure is launch-era US pricing, not a current retail or pre-owned valuation.
