The Seiko SPB077 and SPB079 are modern interpretations of Seiko’s 1968 automatic diver, not the separate limited-edition re-creation. The main choice is configuration: SPB077 pairs a black bezel with a stainless-steel bracelet, while SPB079 uses a blue bezel and silicone strap. Their published movement, case dimensions and water-resistance rating are otherwise the same.
What is the difference between the SPB077 and SPB079?
Seiko announced both watches in March 2018. The company described them as modern-styled models that echo the 1968 design, with a thinner bezel and more contemporary hands. Its historical overview distinguishes them from the limited-edition 1968 re-creation, calling the SPB077 and SPB079 modern re-imaginings instead.
The two references share their core specifications; the most visible and practical distinction is the supplied bracelet or strap and its corresponding bezel color.
| Model | Bezel | Supplied bracelet or strap | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPB077 | Black | Stainless-steel bracelet with secure-lock clasp, push-button release and extender | 184.0 g |
| SPB079 | Blue | Silicone band | 120.0 g |
The weights and configuration details are Seiko’s published specifications for the UK models; they do not establish how either watch feels on a particular wrist. The bracelet version is 64 g heavier by the listed figures. Seiko lists 20 mm lug spacing for both, but that measurement alone does not confirm aftermarket strap fit, end-link fit or a replacement strap’s suitability for diving.

Are the SPB077 and SPB079 different in size or core specifications?
Seiko’s current UK product pages give both models a 44.0 mm case diameter, 51.0 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 12.7 mm thickness. Both have a stainless-steel case with super-hard coating, sapphire crystal with an inner-surface anti-reflective coating, and LumiBrite on the hands and indices. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
Each page also lists a unidirectional rotating bezel, screw-down crown and screw case back. Both are rated Diver’s 200 m / 660 ft by Seiko. That is the published water-resistance rating, not evidence of an independently conducted dive or water-resistance test.

What movement is in the Seiko SPB077?
The SPB077 and SPB079 both use Seiko calibre 6R15, an automatic movement that also supports manual winding. Seiko lists 23 jewels, a date display, stop-seconds function and approximately 50 hours of power reserve. The 2018 announcement additionally specifies 21,600 vibrations per hour.
Seiko’s UK product pages state an accuracy specification of +25 to -15 seconds per day. This is the manufacturer’s stated range, not a measured result for an individual watch or a guarantee of its real-world timekeeping.

How do the watches relate to Seiko’s 1968 diver?
Seiko’s 22 March 2018 announcement says the SPB077 and SPB079 echo the 1968 original but use a modern style, including a thinner bezel and more contemporary hands. The company presented them alongside, but separately from, the limited-edition 1968 re-creation. Seiko’s historical page makes the distinction explicit: it calls these two models modern re-imaginings rather than recreations.
That distinction matters if you are shopping specifically for a faithful re-creation. The SPB077 and SPB079 draw on the 1968 design, but Seiko positioned them as modern interpretations, not as that limited-edition re-creation.

The official specifications allow a direct comparison of configuration, listed weight, dimensions, movement and rated water resistance. They do not establish comfort, wrist fit, in-use accuracy, lume duration, underwater performance or how the watches compare after hands-on wear. For those questions, a published specification should not be mistaken for a test result.
