Seiko’s two Ginza-inspired 140th anniversary watches, announced on September 7, 2021, are the Prospex SPB259 (regional reference SPB259J1) and the Presage SSA445 (regional reference SSA445J1). Both use a blue-gray dial pattern inspired by Ginza’s traditional cobblestones and a Komparu-colored seconds hand. They differ in design lineage, size, display, and specifications; Seiko announced both as limited editions for release in October 2021.
What connects the two watches to Ginza?
Seiko traces its history in Ginza to 1881, when founder Kintaro Hattori opened a shop there selling and repairing clocks and watches. For the anniversary models, the company drew on the district’s traditional cobblestone streets for the dial pattern. Seiko described the blue-gray tone as evoking the modern buildings that also define Ginza.
Both watches have a seconds hand in Komparu, a traditional blue with a soft green tone named for Komparu Street. These shared details tie two otherwise distinct Seiko design lines to the same neighborhood.

What distinguishes the Prospex SPB259?
The SPB259 takes its design basis from Seiko’s modern reinterpretation of the 1959 Alpinist. Its dial combines two sunray patterns, whose appearance changes depending on the viewing angle, with the shared Ginza cobblestone effect. At 38.0 mm in diameter, it is smaller across than the Presage, while its stated 70-hour power reserve and 20-bar water-resistance rating are higher on paper.
What distinguishes the Presage SSA445?
The SSA445 belongs to Seiko’s Style60’s line, whose design is inspired by the 1964 Seiko Crown Chronograph. Seiko specified a box-shaped Hardlex crystal, sharp hands, and faceted indexes. Its open-heart aperture at 9 o’clock exposes the escapement, while a separate 24-hour subdial provides an additional display. Its 40.8 mm case is larger in diameter than the SPB259’s.

When were they released, and what do the prices mean now?
Seiko announced both limited editions on September 7, 2021, with an October 2021 release planned through Seiko boutiques and selected retail partners. The launch quantities were 3,500 SPB259 watches and 4,000 SSA445 watches. The respective approximate European recommended prices—€750 and €590—describe the announcement, not today’s retail or resale market.
