Choose the SRQ037 if the construction and operation of an automatic chronograph are central to what you want. Choose a solar model if you prefer light charging and the longer stated operating interval between charges. The specifications below compare these particular references, not every watch in the Speedtimer range.

What choosing the mechanical SRQ037 means
The SRQ037 uses automatic Caliber 8R46. Seiko specifies a column wheel and vertical clutch, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (eight beats per second), 34 jewels and a 45-hour power reserve. Those details make the movement’s mechanical architecture a defining part of this option, rather than simply a way to time events. Seiko’s 2021 SRQ037 announcement

Its trade-off is practical as well as aesthetic: the stated reserve is 45 hours, and its 42.5 mm diameter and 15.1 mm thickness make it the largest and thickest of the three references compared here. That may matter if you prefer a smaller case or want to leave the watch unworn for longer than its stated reserve.

What choosing a solar SSC813 or SSC911 means
The SSC813 and SSC911 use Seiko’s solar Caliber V192. Seiko lists approximately six months of operation for the SSC911 when fully charged, along with stated precision of ±15 seconds per month. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a head-to-head test against the SRQ037. Seiko SSC911 specifications
#1 Best Overall
- Tachymeter Feature: Measure Speed
- Secure Case Back: Screw Type
Solar is not the same as never needing attention: the watch needs light to charge, and the six-month figure is specifically the stated operating period from a full charge. The V192’s power reserve indicator can help show its charge status. Seiko lists a 60-minute chronograph and a 24-hour subdial for the movement.
Compare the exact case before deciding. The SSC813 measures 39.0 mm across and 13.3 mm thick; the SSC911 measures 41.4 mm across and 13.0 mm thick. Both solar references are thinner than the SRQ037, while the SSC813 is also smaller in diameter. Seiko’s 2021 announcement; SSC911 specifications

Which Speedtimer fits your priorities?
- Pick the SRQ037 if an automatic chronograph and its column-wheel, vertical-clutch construction are the reason you want this watch, and its larger, thicker case suits you.
- Pick the SSC813 if you want the smaller case of these three references and prefer solar charging.
- Pick the SSC911 if you want a solar Speedtimer with a 41.4 mm case, and value its stated precision and approximately six-month operating period when fully charged.
These recommendations follow from Seiko’s specifications and are not claims about how the watches perform in a controlled comparison. The cited Seiko pages do not establish which is more accurate in practice, more durable, or less expensive to own over its lifetime.
What the prices and historical context do—and do not—tell you
Seiko’s 2021 announcement gave U.S. suggested retail prices of $3,000 for the SRQ037 and $725 for the SSC813 solar family. These are historical launch prices, not current prices or a guide to what a particular seller charges today. In the same release, Seiko described the 1969 Speedtimer as the world’s first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. That is Seiko’s account of its own historical role; it provides context for the mechanical lineage, but does not decide which modern reference better suits an individual buyer. This comparison covers the SRQ037, SSC813 and SSC911, not every Speedtimer. Seiko’s solar collection includes additional references, and case dimensions, features and local availability can differ. Confirm the model number and its specifications for your market rather than assuming all Speedtimers share the same size or movement.
