The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ043 is an automatic mechanical chronograph announced in 2022. Its vertically finished blue dial shifts from navy to brighter blue with the viewing angle, while Seiko’s Caliber 8R46 pairs a column wheel with a vertical clutch. The published specification also includes a 42.5 mm stainless-steel case, 10-bar water resistance and an additional calf-leather strap.
What is the Seiko SRQ043?
The SRQ043 is a mechanical automatic chronograph in Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer collection. Seiko announced it on August 9, 2022, and said it would be available from September that year at Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide. That is its original launch timing, not confirmation of current stock. The reference may also appear with the regional designation SRQ043J1.
Seiko’s 2022 announcement presents the watch as drawing on the 1969 Speedtimer chronograph. The historical connection should be kept distinct from the color story: Seiko’s current product description separately links the blue dial color to its timing and measurement devices used in 1964. Seiko described the 1969 Speedtimer as an early automatic chronograph incorporating a column wheel and vertical clutch; that historical characterization is Seiko’s.
What makes the SRQ043 dial blue?
The dial has a vertical hairline finish that changes its appearance with the angle of light. Seiko’s August 9, 2022 announcement puts it simply: “Thanks to the dial’s vertical hairline finish, the dial turns from navy to vivid blue as the angle of vision changes.” It is not a single flat shade in every view.

White sub-dials and outer-ring markers contrast with the blue surface, while red chronograph hands add another high-visibility accent. Seiko also specifies luminous hands and indexes, a gently curved chronograph-seconds hand, and broad, flat pushers. The company describes these as function-led details intended to aid legibility and operation when measuring elapsed time; they are design claims, not independent test results.
What movement is in the Seiko SRQ043?
The SRQ043 uses Seiko Caliber 8R46, an automatic chronograph movement. Seiko specifies 34 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (8 beats per second), and a 45-hour power reserve.

Seiko says the vertical clutch helps prevent the chronograph hands from shuddering or jumping when the chronograph starts, and the column wheel controls chronograph operation. A three-pointed hammer returns the chronograph hands to zero in synchronization when reset. The announcement also says the escapement uses MEMS technology. These are Seiko’s descriptions of the mechanism; no independent accuracy or performance test is established here.
How big is the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ043?
Seiko publishes a 42.5 mm case diameter and 15.1 mm case thickness. Seiko Boutique UK lists a 50.0 mm lug-to-lug length and 20.0 mm lug width for its SRQ043J1 listing. Those latter measurements come from that regional listing. The case and bracelet are stainless steel with a super-hard coating.

Seiko rates the watch to 10 bar water resistance and lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. Those published ratings do not substitute for following the manufacturer’s use and maintenance guidance.
Does the Seiko SRQ043 come with a leather strap?
Seiko’s launch announcement describes the presentation as including a stainless-steel bracelet and an additional calf-leather strap. The bracelet has a three-fold clasp with push-button release. A retailer’s current offer can differ by region, suffix, or package, so check the specific listing to confirm whether both bracelet and strap are included.
