A single auction of an inherited Rolex collection can raise taxable income enough to increase Medicare Part B and Part D premiums two years later. Selling roughly one-third of the watches in each of three tax years may keep each year in a lower income band, but it does not automatically save money: three years of smaller surcharges can cost more than one year at a higher tier, and waiting exposes the collection to market risk.
The decision requires two separate calculations: the taxable gain after the watches’ date-of-death basis and selling costs, and the Medicare premium effect of the resulting modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). Model both before signing an auction contract.

Why the Medicare effect usually arrives two years after the sale
Income-related monthly adjustment amounts (IRMAA) are based on modified adjusted gross income, generally adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest. Medicare normally uses the federal tax return from two years earlier. A sale reported on a 2026 return can therefore affect premiums in 2028, not necessarily the month the auction pays the seller.

For 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported the first IRMAA tier beginning above $109,000 for an individual and above $218,000 for married couples filing jointly. Its table lists a standard Part B premium of $202.90 per month, a first-tier Part B IRMAA amount of $81.20, and a first-tier Part D IRMAA amount of $14.50. Those are 2026 figures, not permanent rates; the applicable premium-year table must be checked when the surcharge is assessed.

| 2026 figure | Reported amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Individual first-tier MAGI threshold | $109,000 | IRMAA begins above this reported threshold |
| Married-filing-jointly first-tier MAGI threshold | $218,000 | IRMAA begins above this reported threshold |
| Standard Part B premium | $202.90 monthly | Base premium shown for 2026 |
| First-tier Part B IRMAA | $81.20 monthly | Added to the Part B premium in that tier |
| First-tier Part D IRMAA | $14.50 monthly | Added to the prescription-drug plan premium in that tier |
At those reported first-tier amounts, the two surcharges total $95.70 per month before any plan-specific Part D premium. Higher IRMAA tiers add more, but the exact amounts change by premium year and are not stated here. Filing status, other income and deductions, and the final tax return all matter.
A timing example
If the entire collection is sold in 2026, the gain generally appears on the 2026 tax return and may be used for 2028 IRMAA. A staged sale in 2026, 2027 and 2028 could affect 2028, 2029 and 2030 premiums respectively. The two-year rule creates the possibility of two additional surcharge years even though the collection is sold only once per watch.

What part of the auction proceeds is actually taxable
The sale price is not automatically the taxable gain. Inherited property generally receives a basis equal to its fair market value on the owner’s date of death. The usual calculation is sale proceeds minus that basis and allowable selling expenses, subject to the estate records and the watch’s tax classification.
Find the stepped-up basis first
Look for the estate appraisal and the basis information reported to beneficiaries, including Schedule A or Form 8971 records when applicable. If a watch was omitted from the appraisal, valued later, or transferred under unusual terms, a tax professional may need to reconstruct the basis. Without reliable records, the gain estimate can be wrong before Medicare is even considered.

Do not assume every watch receives the collectibles rate
Internal Revenue Service Publication 550 places long-term collectibles gain in the 28% rate-gain category. Its examples include art, rugs, antiques, precious metals, gems, stamps, coins and alcoholic beverages held for more than one year. The rule can apply to watches, but classification is fact-specific. Modern stainless-steel models, for example, may require closer analysis than a clearly documented antique or precious-metal piece. Ask a tax professional to classify each reference rather than applying 28% to the entire collection automatically.
One auction versus selling over three years
A one-auction strategy concentrates the collection’s gain in one tax year. A three-year strategy means selling about one-third each year, which can lower the peak MAGI. The right answer depends on where each year lands in the IRMAA table, not simply on the number of watches sold.

| Decision factor | Single auction | Three staged sales |
|---|---|---|
| Peak MAGI | Highest in one year; may jump several IRMAA tiers | Potentially lower in each year if gains are distributed |
| Two-year premium effect | Usually one premium year attributable to the concentrated gain, assuming other income does not keep MAGI elevated | Each sale year can feed a separate premium year, potentially three years |
| Part B and Part D exposure | Could produce one high-tier year for both parts | Could produce lower-tier surcharges in multiple years |
| Auction costs | One consignment and one sales process, but fees depend on the contract | Fees, reserves and logistics may apply to each sale; terms must be compared in writing |
| Buyer demand | One event may attract attention to a complete collection | Later watches face future demand and pricing conditions |
| Cash timing | Auction houses usually pay sellers in one settlement | Separate consignments are more practical than assuming an installment arrangement |
Three years can be cheaper when the single-sale gain would push MAGI into a much higher tier and each staged year remains below, or only slightly above, a lower tier. It can be more expensive when all three years incur surcharges. Compare the total Part B and Part D amounts over every affected premium year, not just the surcharge in the first year.

How to build a decision model before consigning
- Document the basis. Obtain the date-of-death appraisal and estate basis records for every watch. Note any later improvements, gifts, or ownership changes.
- Create a watch-by-watch inventory. Record reference number, metal, age, condition, provenance, service history and a realistic expected selling range.
- Confirm tax classification. Ask a tax professional whether each watch is a collectible and how its gain or loss will be reported. Keep the answer by reference, not as a blanket assumption for the collection.
- Estimate net proceeds. Use expected sale prices less commissions, buyer premiums that affect the seller, insurance, shipping and other documented selling expenses.
- Calculate gain for each scenario. Model one auction and three annual sales using proceeds minus basis and selling costs. Include the widow’s other income, tax-exempt interest and expected deductions for each year.
- Project MAGI by tax year. Identify whether the sale year is filed jointly or separately and whether the surviving spouse’s filing status changes in later years.
- Map each MAGI to the correct IRMAA table. Shift every sale year forward two years, then check the Part B and Part D tier for that premium year. Use the table in force for that year rather than the 2026 figures above.
- Stress-test the plan. Run lower and higher sale prices, delayed sales, an unexpected repair bill, and a market decline. A tax saving can disappear if waiting reduces net auction proceeds.
- Get auction terms in writing. Confirm commission, reserve policy, insurance, payment date, withdrawal rules and whether all proceeds are paid in one settlement.
Why auction settlement terms can defeat an assumed installment plan
An auction house commonly pays the seller after the sale closes and the buyer’s payment clears. That generally creates one settlement for that auction, even if the collection was consigned months earlier. Do not assume that asking for delayed checks will spread the taxable income; the legal tax treatment depends on the contract and applicable tax rules.

To create genuine annual reporting periods, separate consignments and sales may be more practical than relying on an installment arrangement. Any proposed installment structure should be reviewed by a tax professional before the contract is signed, because payment timing, constructive receipt and the type of asset sold can change the result.
Can the Medicare surcharge be appealed after the spouse dies?
A surviving spouse whose income falls because of the spouse’s death can ask Social Security to reconsider IRMAA under the life-changing-event rules, generally using Form SSA-44 and supporting documentation. The death-related income reduction must be documented, and approval is not automatic.
The Rolex sale itself is not identified as a qualifying life-changing event in the scenario. A large gain can still affect the two-year tax return used for IRMAA, so an appeal based only on selling the watches is not the same as an appeal based on the household income reduction caused by the spouse’s death. Contact Social Security promptly if the surcharge reflects income that no longer represents the widow’s current circumstances.

- Date-of-death appraisal and estate basis documents collected
- Inventory and provenance prepared for every watch
- Collectibles classification reviewed by a tax professional
- Net proceeds and gain estimated after all auction expenses
- One-sale and three-year MAGI projections completed
- Two-year IRMAA effects mapped for every projected sale year
- Written auction terms reviewed, including settlement timing
- Form SSA-44 eligibility considered if the spouse’s death reduced ongoing income
The practical verdict is conditional: staging can avoid two extra high-surcharge years when it keeps annual MAGI in lower bands, but it is not inherently cheaper. Choose the schedule only after comparing the combined Medicare premiums, tax on the gain, auction costs and the risk that waiting changes the watches’ market value.
