I admired the Cartier Santos, but owning it taught me that admiring a watch and reaching for it every day are different things. My real preference is for 36 mm go-anywhere, do-anything watches—and the Santos I bought did not fit my routine and wardrobe as naturally as I expected. That is my personal reason for selling, not a rule about what anyone else should buy.
Why I’m selling my Cartier Santos
The Santos appealed to me as an idea as much as an object. On my wrist, though, it was not the watch I instinctively chose. I found myself drawn instead to 36 mm GADA watches: versatile pieces that feel at home across more of my everyday situations.

That gap between admiration and use is the lesson. A watch can be beautiful, historically resonant or exciting to own and still not match the way you dress, the watches you prefer in practice, or the piece you want to put on in the morning. A Reddit commenter described the risk as “buying the idea of the watch instead of the watch itself.” That phrasing captures my experience, but it is one owner’s reflection—not a verdict on the Santos or its owners.

What I would check before buying a Santos
Try the exact size and configuration
Do not assume that a photograph or a general impression of the Santos name tells you how a particular watch will wear. Try the size and configuration you are considering on your own wrist, ideally in person. The current Santos de Cartier, Santos-Dumont and older models such as the Galbée or Santos 100 are distinct watches; the name alone does not make their proportions or wearing experience interchangeable.

Consider bracelet and strap separately
Strap preference is personal. In the Reddit discussion, one commenter preferred the Santos on leather, while I felt the supplied strap did not look right on me. A strap change may alter the look, but it is not a guaranteed solution to fit or to whether you will reach for the watch. For current Santos de Cartier models, Bob’s Watches describes a steel bracelet and an additional strap with QuickSwitch; pre-owned sets can differ. Check the exact reference and what is actually included before treating that as part of a particular watch’s package.
Picture it in your own routine
Ask yourself whether the watch works with the clothes you wear and the situations you encounter—not only whether it looks compelling in a display case or online. One commenter advised, “don’t saddle yourself with unreasonable expectations.” Give the watch room to be itself, but be honest about whether it suits your life. The most useful question is not whether a Santos is versatile in the abstract; it is whether you will choose this Santos for your ordinary days.

What to establish before selling
A Santos price or resale headline cannot determine what one specific watch will bring. The exact reference, generation, material, size, condition, originality and configuration all matter, as do the bracelet or strap and the accessories included. Describe those details clearly when requesting a valuation or listing the watch.
- Identify the exact model and reference rather than listing it only as a “Cartier Santos.”
- State the case material and size, and distinguish the Santos de Cartier from Santos-Dumont or older Santos generations.
- Describe condition accurately and disclose whether the watch and its components are original.
- Specify whether the original bracelet, strap, or both are included, along with the box, papers and other accessories you have.
These factors are emphasized by commercial sources: Bob’s Watches says resale varies by reference, condition and configuration, while South Bay Coin notes that different Santos branches and metals appeal to different buyers and highlights originality and the original bracelet or strap. Their guidance can help a seller prepare a description, but it is not an independent appraisal or a promise of a particular offer.

What published resale figures can—and cannot—tell you
Two sources offer useful context, but their figures describe different periods and methods. Chrono24 Magazine reported a 4.5% market-value gain for the Santos over the 12 months discussed in its 2024 article and said the Santos de Cartier had held value over the preceding three-year period. That is historical market analysis, not a forecast or an individual seller’s realized gain.
Bob’s Watches reported medians based on completed sales from January through September 2026 of $7,595 for large steel and $6,995 for medium steel Santos models. The retailer says individual prices vary with condition, box, papers and configuration. These medians are not a valuation for my watch, do not establish its purchase price or sale proceeds, and do not account for any fees.

Neither set of figures tells you what one specific Santos will sell for. My exact reference, purchase price, condition and transaction outcome are not established here, so I cannot use market-wide figures to claim what I will receive or whether selling will produce a gain or loss.

Buying a watch you admire is not the same as buying one that fits your habits. Before committing to a watch with a strong image or story, try the relevant size and configuration, place it in the context of your wardrobe and routine, and pay attention to what you genuinely reach for. My Santos taught me that my everyday preference is a 36 mm GADA watch. Another wearer may have the opposite experience; the point is to learn your own.
