The automatic SRQ029 is the more historically focused alternative, but it is a larger, limited-edition anniversary watch with more elaborate chronograph engineering. They share a look, not a purpose.
What makes a Seiko a “Panda”?
“Panda” describes the high-contrast dial layout: a light dial with dark subdials. Seiko Philippines explicitly markets the SSC813P1 as a panda-dial chronograph. Seiko’s history page says fans use the nickname for the SRQ029 because of its two black subdials against a white dial. The SRQ029 also has a hairline-finished dial, an orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand and tachymeter markings. Seiko Philippines: Prospex Speedtimer SSC813P1 · Seiko: SRQ029 design history

Which Seiko Panda should you consider?
SSC813P1: the practical solar option
The SSC813P1 is a 39mm stainless-steel Prospex Speedtimer with a curved sapphire crystal, tachymeter bezel and 100m water resistance, according to Seiko Philippines. Its solar V192 movement is specified for up to six months of operation on a full charge. Seiko describes it as a 60-minute chronograph. Those facts make it the more straightforward choice if you want the panda look in a comparatively compact solar watch without the routine of a mechanical movement. SRQ029: the automatic anniversary option
Seiko introduced the SRQ029 in 2019 as a Prospex limited edition commemorating its 1969 Caliber 6139 chronograph. The company described the 6139 as among the world’s first automatic chronographs and the first to combine a column wheel and vertical clutch. The SRQ029’s automatic Caliber 8R48 uses those two components as well.
Seiko’s launch specifications give the SRQ029 a 12-hour chronograph, 45-hour power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 34 jewels, a 41mm diameter, 16mm thickness and 10-bar water resistance. The announced edition was limited to 1,000 pieces, with availability planned from December 2019. These are launch details; they do not establish current stock or resale value. | What matters | SSC813P1 | SRQ029 |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Solar V192 | Automatic Caliber 8R48 with column wheel and vertical clutch |
| Chronograph | 60 minutes | 12 hours |
| Case dimensions | 39mm diameter | 41mm diameter; 16mm thickness |

Case dimensions alone do not determine comfort: wrist shape, lug geometry, thickness and bracelet fit also matter. The published figures establish that the SRQ029 is wider and notably thick, but they cannot tell you how either watch will wear on your wrist.
What do the historical prices tell you?
In its 2019 announcement, Seiko Watch Corporation gave approximate European recommended retail prices of €3,700 for the SRQ029 and €3,400 for the related SRQ031, with availability planned from December 2019. These are historical launch recommendations, not current prices, resale estimates or a price for the SSC813P1. So, is the Seiko Panda worth considering?
For a panda-dial Seiko to wear as a relatively compact solar chronograph, the SSC813P1 is the more direct fit on the published specifications. Choose the SRQ029 if the point is its automatic movement, longer chronograph range and connection to Seiko’s 1969 chronograph history—and if its 41mm, 16mm case suits you. There is no need to treat the two as competing versions of the same watch: one prioritizes straightforward solar ownership, the other a limited-edition mechanical design.
