What is the Shinola Mackinac Yacht Watch Automatic?
Shinola’s July 16, 2022 launch story presented the Mackinac Yacht Watch Automatic as the company’s first automatic chronograph with yacht-timer functionality. The release was tied to the Bayview Mackinac Race, a Great Lakes regatta with a long history. The watch’s defining feature is its regatta countdown: it is intended to help a crew track the minutes before a race start.
The original limited edition is identifiable in Shinola’s launch account by its 40mm square case and bright canary-yellow dial. A contemporary report described a stainless-steel case, ridged rubber strap, orange and red accents, and a three-tone blue timer. Those details give the dial a high-contrast, instrument-like look, while the square case makes it visually distinct from a conventional round sailing chronograph. How does the yacht timer work?
A yacht timer is a countdown chronograph for the period before a sailing race begins. Boats maneuver for position and build speed while approaching the start line; crossing before the start can bring a penalty. The countdown helps the skipper and crew coordinate their approach so they can reach the line at the starting signal rather than too early.

Shinola describes a sequence of flags and horns at five, four, one and zero minutes. The watch is meant to make that countdown legible at a glance, rather than merely decorate the dial with a generic chronograph display. Shinola’s story notes that, even after up to three days of sailing, a race can be decided by seconds. The company’s how-to index also lists a model-specific guide for Mackinac yacht-timer functionality, though the operating steps are not established here.

How the original differs from later Mackinac watches
The 2022 watch is the limited-edition yellow-dial Mackinac Yacht Watch Automatic. It should not be conflated with the later Mackinac Night Race model. Shinola’s current Mackinac Night Race product page describes a separate variant and lists its own details, including a 40mm case, automatic movement, sapphire crystal and 10 ATM rating. Those specifications belong to that product page; they should not be transferred wholesale to the 2022 yellow-dial watch.

What matters when comparing yacht-timer watches?
- Countdown function: Confirm that the watch offers a regatta-start countdown, rather than only a standard elapsed-time chronograph.
- At-a-glance legibility: Assess the timer’s contrast and whether its markings are easy to distinguish quickly.
- Case shape and fit: The Mackinac’s 40mm square case wears differently from a round case of the same stated width; try it on if fit is a deciding factor.
- Movement and chronograph: Compare the stated movement and the specific timer display, not just the presence of chronograph pushers.
- Condition and evidence: For a used example, consider condition, provenance, strap and the source of any water-resistance claim alongside the asking price.
