The Shinola Runlate is a playful Runwell reinterpretation whose hour markers read “LATE.” Shinola brand marketer Phil Pirkovic says the design began as an April Fools’ concept and became a 100-piece limited run after people asked to buy it. His retrospective account describes an earlier release, not a new launch; the available sources do not establish a current Shinola announcement or active stock.
What is the Shinola Runlate?
The Runlate takes the familiar Runwell idea and turns it into a joke about punctuality: every hour marker is replaced with the word “LATE.” Pirkovic described the concept this way in a LinkedIn post: “We took our most iconic watch, the Runwell, and reimagined it as The Runlate—a version where every hour marker was replaced with the word ‘LATE.’” Read Pirkovic’s account.
According to Pirkovic, the concept started as an April Fools’ idea. Audience requests prompted Shinola to make it as a limited edition. He says the company launched 100 pieces three months later and that they sold out “almost immediately.” Those details come from his account as a brand marketer, rather than a separately located official product announcement or independently measured sales record.
How many Runlate watches were made?
Pirkovic says the edition was limited to 100 pieces. His post states, “Three months later, we officially launched The Runlate as a limited run of 100 pieces.” The same post characterizes the sellout as almost immediate; it does not give a precise sell-through period or sales data. An older private resale post titled “Shinola Runlate (Limited-Edition) 1/100” separately shows that at least one seller represented a watch as part of that run, but it is not proof of authenticity or current availability.

Can you still buy the Shinola Runlate?
The sources available here do not establish current authorized stock, and the old private resale post is not evidence that a watch is still for sale. Treat any Runlate listing as a resale offer to verify individually, not as confirmation of an active Shinola release or a guaranteed route to purchase.
Before buying a secondhand example, ask for clear photographs, serial and provenance documentation, condition details, and written return terms. Check the seller’s reputation and ask Shinola whether it can authenticate or service that specific watch; no source confirms a guaranteed authentication process for Runlate buyers.

Is the Runlate just a Runwell with a different dial?
The verified distinction is the dial concept: the Runlate replaces the hour markers with “LATE,” while its origin story and limited-edition status are described by Pirkovic. The sources do not establish that the Runlate shares the current Runwell’s movement, case size, water resistance, warranty, or strap fit.
Shinola’s current Runwell listings provide a useful comparison, but their specifications apply to the listed Runwell models only. One current variant is described as having an Argonite 705 quartz movement, double-curve sapphire crystal, 36 mm case, and 5 ATM depth rating. See Shinola’s Runwell product listing. Likewise, Shinola’s Runwell story says Runwell straps use quick-release pins that can be changed without tools, but it does not confirm that the Runlate uses the same attachment or dimensions. Check the specific watch before ordering a replacement strap. Shinola’s Runwell story.
