The Praesidus A-11 Utah Beach is a commemorative field watch whose real-sand dial tells a story at the expense of instant legibility. In Matthew Catellier’s hands-on review of the Surf Blue variant, the vintage-sized case and distinctive dial made a strong impression; the watch makes most sense for buyers who value its connection to D-Day as much as practical timekeeping.
What makes the Utah Beach A-11 distinctive?
The dial is the reason to consider this watch. Catellier describes painted coastal imagery alongside real sand visible beneath the crystal, creating a tactile, layered effect rather than a conventional military-style dial. Praesidus says its Utah Beach commemorative watch was made in collaboration with the Utah Beach Landing Museum. Its black listing describes sand collected at Utah Beach on June 6, 2023, and a dial cut representing the Normandy coast, marked with Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. The result is more commemorative object than stripped-back instrument. Catellier noted partially sandwich-style Arabic numerals, luminous sword-shaped hands and seconds hand, and a luminous upper portion of the seconds track. But the artwork competes with the markers. He describes the model as “sacrificing some legibility” for its dial art, a meaningful compromise if you want to read the time at a glance.

How did the reviewed Surf Blue version wear?
Catellier’s July 9, 2026 review covers a Surf Blue sample, not the black configuration currently described on the official product page. He reports dimensions of 38 mm in diameter, 45 mm lug-to-lug and 13.5 mm thick. On his 6.5-inch wrist, he found the watch wore well. That is one reviewer’s fit experience, not a guarantee for other wrists.

He describes the case as vintage-sized, the coin-edged bezel as a fitting retro cue, and the finish as low-luster. In his assessment, the watch felt good in hand and on wrist, with a pleasing weight. What is specified—and what varies by version?
Do not assume that every Utah Beach A-11 has the same case material, dial, strap options or price. Catellier’s Surf Blue review and Praesidus’ official listings describe different configurations. The official black product page lists a 38 mm stainless-steel case, 10 ATM water resistance, double-domed acrylic crystal and Miyota 9039 automatic movement. It also specifies sword hands with Super-Luminova and a choice of blue or black Tropic rubber, or a green two-piece NATO strap.

The figures above come from different sources and pages; they are not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of current stock. The official black listing’s historical description calls the watch an 80th-anniversary D-Day commemorative piece, while Catellier describes the Surf Blue release as having arrived June 6, 2026. Is it a practical field watch?
It retains field-watch cues, but the unusual dial changes the priorities. If quick, unambiguous time reading is your main requirement, the artwork and partially transparent lower dial indexes are drawbacks. The black listing notes that its lower dial indexes are printed on a transparent dial and that there is no luminous material within the paint. Luminous hands and portions of the seconds track help, but do not erase the visual competition Catellier reports.

The black model’s stated 10 ATM rating is a published specification, not a promise that every Utah Beach variant has the same rating or that the watch suits a particular water activity. Its acrylic crystal and automatic movement are likewise details from that black listing; confirm the exact page for the version you are considering. The available sources do not establish independent accuracy results, crown construction details, or a controlled comparison with other field watches.
Who should consider it?
- Good fit: You are drawn to D-Day and Normandy history, want a commemorative watch with a genuinely unusual dial, and are comfortable giving up some at-a-glance legibility for visual storytelling.
- Think twice: Your priority is fast reading, a conventional field-watch dial, or a fit decision based on dimensions Catellier did not report for your chosen variant.
- Check before ordering: Verify the exact variant’s dimensions, movement, water-resistance rating, crystal, strap selection, price and stock status on its current product page.
Catellier’s overall verdict favors the watch for people who value its WWII story, retro proportions and distinctive dial. He considers its Japanese automatic movement adequate and reports good build impressions for the price he cites. That assessment is best read as his view of the reviewed Surf Blue sample, not a promise that every version shares the same details or current price.

What are the return and warranty terms?
Praesidus’ FAQ states that website orders may be returned within 30 days and that its standard warranty lasts two years from delivery, covering manufacturing defects. It excludes straps from general warranty coverage and excludes damage caused by misuse or normal wear. The company says warranty service typically takes 8–12 weeks including shipping, with timing depending on location and the work required.
