Singapore’s Watch Industry: Zelos, Vario, BOLDR and More

Singapore’s watch scene spans independent brands such as Zelos, Vario and BOLDR, plus local movement manufacturing. Here’s what distinguishes them and where their watches are made.

Singapore’s watch scene combines independent, design-led consumer brands with established local manufacturing of movements and precision components. Zelos, Vario and BOLDR are Singapore-linked watch brands, but that does not mean their watches are made in Singapore: each company’s design, component sourcing, production and inspection arrangements differ.

What does “Singapore watch industry” mean?

It helps to separate two parts of the picture. Independent brands create watches for consumers and may be founded, designed or operated in Singapore while relying on overseas production. Industrial manufacturers make watch movements and components locally, including for the wider world market. These activities belong to the same industry, but one should not be mistaken for the other.

Seiko Manufacturing (Singapore) traces its history to Singapore Time Pte Ltd, established on 12 September 1973, with production beginning in 1974. The company says it makes mechanical and quartz movements and precision components using processes that include precision machining, injection molding, surface treatment, assembly and testing. Since 2020 it has operated under its current name and reports to Seiko Watch Corporation. Seiko’s company history and movement manufacturing information describe this local industrial role.

Which Singapore watch brands are worth knowing?

Zelos, Vario and BOLDR illustrate different approaches: Zelos emphasizes experimental materials, Vario pairs watches with accessories and small-batch production, and BOLDR has developed a sports-watch identity. They are examples, not a complete census of Singapore-linked brands.

Zelos: material-led, experimental watches

Founded in 2014 by Elshan Tang, Zelos says Tang designs its watches in Singapore. The brand describes its approach as experimental and highlights materials including meteorite, bronze, submarine metals and Timascus, alongside hand-wound and automatic movements. Those are the company’s descriptions of its design and products. Zelos’ about page provides its own account.

Singapore-based design does not mean Singapore production. CNA reported on 25 August 2025 that Zelos outsources production to China and sources components from Switzerland for higher-end watches. In that report, CNA put the company’s annual production at 10,000 watches and its sell-out rate at 95%; these are reported figures, not audited accounts or guarantees of future output. CNA also reported that the ten-piece 2020 Mirage Tourbillon collection sold out in ten minutes. Tang told CNA: “Traditional watchmaking follows rules established decades ago,” he explained from our meeting at a local cafe. “We’re writing entirely new ones.” CNA’s Zelos profile gives the reporting context.

Vario: watches, straps and accessories

Vario says it has operated since 2016 as a Singapore-designed watch and accessories business. Its watches are produced in small, carefully controlled batches, use Japanese or Swiss movements, and are individually inspected in Singapore, according to the company. Vario also sells straps, watch accessories and travel or storage products. These production and inspection details are the brand’s statements, not an independent audit. Vario’s about page explains its approach and limited editions.

Vario says limited editions are one-time releases and are not restocked once sold out. Its own description is succinct: “We started Vario because a good watch shouldn’t cost a year’s salary or a kidney.” The Business Times quoted founder Ivan Chua estimating that the company sells about 2,000 units annually; that is his estimate as reported by the newspaper, not audited sales data. The Business Times’ report on Singapore’s microbrands includes the estimate.

BOLDR: a changed plan and a sports-watch focus

BOLDR Supply Co’s story began in 2015 with founder Leon Leong’s idea for a durable “clever watch” combining an analogue battery and smart features. CNA reports that the Kickstarter concept reached its funding goal quickly, but production setbacks led the team to cancel and refund orders. Following feedback from backers, the company proceeded with a watch without the smart function. CNA describes BOLDR’s later identity as a sports-watch brand with contemporary designs. CNA’s roundup of Singapore watch microbrands recounts the origin story; its S$399 starting-price figure is historical article context, not current pricing.

What other Singapore-linked watch brands are there?

The Business Times names RZE, Azimuth, Gruppo Gamma, Arcturus, Horizon, Feynman and Ubiq alongside Zelos, BOLDR and Vario. CNA’s roundup adds examples including Kent Hall & Co, Humism and Reverie. The lists are useful starting points, not a verified complete register of every local label. The Business Times and CNA describe brands and the wider scene.

For additional historical context, a 2023 Fratello feature describes Vario’s early focus on hard-to-find straps and its subsequent move into vintage-inspired watches, including the 1918 Trench and 1945 D12 lines. That is a snapshot of the brand’s development, not a current catalog. Fratello’s overview covers Vario, Zelos, BOLDR and other brands.

How should you compare Singapore watch brands?

Compare the specific watch, not just the country in its brand story. Design location, component origin, manufacturing, assembly and inspection can all differ. Check the current model page for specifications and availability; brand-wide summaries cannot establish fit or service details for every watch.

Invicta Men's Automatic-self-Wind Watch with Stainless-Steel Strap, Silver, 15 (Model: 24765)
  • 51mm Case Diameter
  • Automatic blue dial with white luminous hands and hour markers with date display, stainless steel band, screw down crown
  • Automatic-self-wind Movement
  • Water resistant 300m (985ft): in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving
  • Intended use and design: Decide whether you want a sports-oriented watch, a particular material or a vintage-inspired style, then assess the actual model.
  • Movement and materials: Check movement type and stated origin, case material and dimensions. Zelos lists both hand-wound and automatic movements and emphasizes unusual materials; Vario states that its watches use Japanese or Swiss movements.
  • Strap fit: Confirm lug width and whether the watch has fixed lugs before buying a replacement strap. Compatibility is model-specific, especially for fixed-lug designs.
  • Production and release policy: Ask whether the watch is a regular model or a limited edition, whether a sold-out release may return, and where the particular model is made and inspected.
  • Ownership terms: Verify current price, warranty, after-sales service and shipping or tax treatment with the brand or seller before ordering; these details can change and are not established uniformly across the brands here.

Are Singapore-linked watches made in Singapore?

Not necessarily. CNA’s 2025 reporting says Zelos outsources production to China, while its own brand account says its founder designs watches in Singapore. Vario says its watches are designed in Singapore, use Japanese or Swiss movements and are inspected individually in Singapore; that does not by itself establish that every manufacturing stage happens locally. Seiko Manufacturing (Singapore), by contrast, explicitly describes local production of mechanical and quartz movements and precision components. For any particular watch, rely on model-specific statements that distinguish design, component manufacture, assembly and inspection.
