Sinn 140 St S Review: The Space Chronograph, Explained

The modern Sinn 140 St S pairs a central 60-minute chronograph display with the 140 family’s space-watch heritage—but it is not the Lemania 5100-equipped watch Furrer wore in 1985.

The modern Sinn 140 St S keeps the space-chronograph family’s distinctive central 60-minute stopwatch hand, but it is not the same watch Reinhard Furrer wore on the 1985 D1 Spacelab mission. That earlier 140 S used a Lemania 5100; the modern watch uses Sinn’s SZ01 chronograph design. The distinction matters if you are weighing historical authenticity against the updated watch’s legibility and contemporary construction.

What is the Sinn 140 St S?

The 140 St S is a modern member of Sinn’s 140 space-chronograph family. Sinn’s October 2025 product document describes the 140 St and its place in that family, while Robert-Jan Broer’s 2014 Fratello review covers the 140 St S specifically. The model’s look and function draw on the family’s history, but the modern watch is an updated design rather than a reissue of Furrer’s exact instrument.

Sinn says the earlier 140 S worn by physicist and astronaut Reinhard Furrer during the 1985 D1 Spacelab mission had a Lemania 5100 movement. The modern 140 St uses Sinn’s SZ01. In other words, the spaceflight association belongs to the earlier watch; the modern 140 St S should not be described as the watch that flew with Furrer. Sinn’s 140 St product document gives the manufacturer’s account, and Broer’s 2014 review makes the same distinction for the reviewed St S.

What movement does it use, and what does the central hand do?

Sinn identifies the modern 140 St’s chronograph as the SINN SZ01, with a central 60-minute stopwatch function. Broer describes the reviewed 140 St S as using a movement based on ETA/Valjoux 7750 architecture. The central chronograph-minute hand is the key practical difference in the display: elapsed minutes are read from the center of the dial rather than from a small subsidiary counter. Sinn presents the layout as a readability improvement; Broer likewise valued its legibility and said the arrangement recalled the functionality associated with the Lemania 5100.

That functional resemblance does not make the SZ01 a Lemania 5100. The modern watch has its own movement design, while the Lemania-powered 140 S is the historically relevant earlier model. If movement provenance is central to your decision, treat them as distinct watches rather than interchangeable versions.

How is the case and dial set up?

Sinn’s October 2025 140 St product document describes a bead-blasted stainless-steel case with TEGIMENT surface hardening, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, a sapphire crystal, an interior pilot’s bezel, and 10 bar water resistance. Because that document covers the 140 St rather than a dedicated 140 St S reference page, confirm the specifications for the exact St S variant you are considering before relying on every item as a variant-specific guarantee.

Sinn says its dehumidifying system improves functional reliability and helps prevent fogging. Broer’s 2014 review describes a moisture-indicating copper-sulfate drying capsule, a matte black dial, luminous hour markers, bright chronograph hands, and the inner bezel operated by the crown at 10 o’clock. These are useful details about the reviewed watch, but the manufacturer’s stated benefits and a reviewer’s account are not independent durability, anti-fogging, or water-resistance tests.

How big is it, and how does it wear?

Broer reported the reviewed 140 St S at 44 mm in diameter, 22 mm across the strap, and 15 mm high. He called it large but wearable, and said he wore it continuously for more than a week. He also described the pushers as snappy and solid and praised the central chronograph-minute hand. Those are his dated observations from 2014, not a current fit test or a promise that the case will suit every wrist.

The reported 15 mm height and 44 mm diameter make this a substantial chronograph, so wrist circumference alone is not the whole fit question: consider how the case sits over the wrist and whether it clears a shirt cuff. The 22 mm strap width reported in that review can help when looking for alternatives, but check the current reference’s lug width, attachment and clasp compatibility before ordering a strap.

What did it cost, and what does it cost now?

Broer listed a German/European price of €3,490 for the leather-strap version in 2014. That is a historical list price, not a current quote. A current official price, stock status, and region-specific availability could not be established from the available product information. Check Sinn or an authorized seller for the exact reference, included strap or bracelet, local price, and service support before making a purchase decision.

Who should consider the 140 St S?

The modern 140 St S is most compelling if you want the family’s central-minute chronograph layout and a contemporary Sinn execution, rather than a historically exact Furrer-era 140 S. The central hand puts elapsed minutes in a prominent, quickly read position, while the case size and internal bezel give it a purposeful instrument-watch character.

If historical movement authenticity is your priority, compare the modern watch with the earlier 140 S or related Lemania 5100-equipped models—but verify the specific reference and its provenance rather than assuming the family name guarantees the same movement. For everyday ownership, compare actual wrist fit, bezel and crown operation, strap or bracelet configuration, water-resistance rating, hardening and moisture-control provisions, local price, availability, and servicing options. The 142 St S is a separate model; its specifications should not be used as proof of the 140 St S’s configuration.
