These six watches make the movement part of the view: instead of skeletonizing the whole watch, each brings a particular mechanism or display to the dial side. The lineup is a historical snapshot from Robin Nooy’s April 5, 2022 Monochrome Watches guide, not a current-stock or current-price list. Nooy’s useful distinction is that “Instead of skeletonizing all the components of a movement and/or dial, you can also expose the mechanics by mounting them dial-side.”
What “dial-side mechanics” means
A conventional dial hides much of the movement; a skeleton watch removes material from the dial or movement to reveal more of it. These designs take another route: they place a working complication, time display, or movement component where it can be seen from the front. The result is not one watch type. The six examples range from a minute repeater and tourbillon to a pointer date, rotating time display, chronograph, and inverted rotor.
All specifications, limited-edition counts, and prices below are those reported by Monochrome Watches in 2022. They should not be read as current retail prices, remaining production, or present availability. The article’s listed prices also use different currencies and tax bases, so they are not direct price comparisons.

How the dial-side display changes the experience
For sound and spectacle: Chopard L.U.C. Full Strike Tourbillon
The Full Strike Tourbillon makes two complications visible at once: the tourbillon and the minute repeater’s hammers and gongs. The repeater is an audible complication, activated by a pusher in the crown, while its dial-side presentation lets the wearer watch the striking mechanism at work. Its 568-component calibre and dual credentials—COSC certification and the Poinçon de Genève hallmark—are reported by the 2022 guide; neither is a substitute for assessing the watch’s size, servicing needs, or current offer.

For an interactive date: Armin Strom Orbit
The Orbit’s date is not a conventional window. Its pointer sweeps a ceramic scale, and the side pusher changes the mechanism’s state before returning the hand to the correct date through a memory system. That makes the watch’s interaction as distinctive as its visible micro-rotor and barrel system. The guide reports 50 m water resistance, but that specification alone should not be taken as a recommendation for any particular water activity.
For a sculptural time display: Trilobe Une Folle Journée
Une Folle Journée places the indication itself in motion: three rings rotate to show hours, minutes, and seconds. The domed sapphire adds depth, but also accounts for a substantial share of its listed 17.8 mm height—the article specifies a 10.8 mm crystal. Consider that profile in person if cuff clearance matters; the quoted diameter alone does not capture how the watch wears.

For a moving carousel and twin balances: Ulysse Nardin Freak S
The Freak S is organized around a rotating carousel that both indicates time and carries the escapement. Its inclined double balance-wheel arrangement makes the mechanism the focal point rather than placing it behind ordinary hands. At 45 mm, it is the largest diameter stated among these six; the 2022 guide does not give its thickness.
For a chronograph laid out across the dial: Louis Moinet Memoris Spirit
The Memoris Spirit puts the chronograph’s running gear in the upper portion of the dial and moves the hour-and-minute display below. Its large monopusher at 2 o’clock handles start, stop, and reset. The guide lists distinct titanium and rose-gold editions and prices, but does not state a water-resistance rating or case thickness.

For a playful view of the rotor: M.A.D. Editions M.A.D. 1 Red
The M.A.D. 1 Red is the least conventional interpretation in the group. Rather than exposing a complication such as a repeater or chronograph, it turns the movement upside down and places a triple-blade rotor above it. The 2022 article’s lottery note is historical, not evidence of how the watch can be acquired now.

Start with the mechanism you actually want to watch. The Chopard gives the dial-side view a functional, acoustic purpose; the Orbit makes date-setting interactive; Trilobe and Ulysse Nardin make time indication itself kinetic; Louis Moinet foregrounds chronograph operation; and M.A.D. Editions emphasizes the rotor and movement architecture.

- Check the proportions, not just the diameter. The Trilobe is 17.8 mm high including its tall crystal, while the Chopard and Orbit list thicknesses of 12.58 mm and 12.6 mm respectively. The Freak S, Memoris Spirit, and M.A.D. 1 Red thicknesses are not stated in the guide.
- Compare water resistance in context. The guide lists 50 m for the Orbit and Trilobe and 30 m for the Freak S. It gives no rating for the other three. These figures are specifications, not a complete statement of suitability for swimming or other water use.
- Separate price from availability. The 2022 guide’s currencies and tax treatment vary: the Trilobe price includes taxes, the M.A.D. figure excludes VAT, and the remaining quoted amounts do not have a tax basis stated there. A listed limited run does not confirm that an example remains for sale.
- Account for ownership complexity. These are mechanically unusual, high-complication or limited-run watches. Before buying, confirm service arrangements, warranty terms, condition, authenticity, and the exact configuration with the seller or brand; the historical guide does not establish current offers.
