There is no single objective “best” independent American watchmaker: the right choice depends on the work you want in a watch, how much U.S. manufacturing matters to you, and what you expect for availability and service. This shortlist uses “independent” broadly for makers and small brands operating outside major watch groups, and “from the USA” for a meaningful U.S. connection such as ownership, design, assembly, restoration, or component manufacture. Those connections are not interchangeable, and none alone means a watch is Made in USA.
How to compare independent watchmakers from the USA
Start with the exact watch reference, not just the brand’s address. A U.S.-based company may design or assemble a watch here while sourcing its movement and other parts abroad. Another maker may rebuild a Swiss caliber by hand in the United States; another may make or finish substantial components domestically. The amount and type of domestic work vary by company and model.
The list below is a shortlist, not a standardized test or a definitive ranking. It includes artisan watchmakers, small brands, and microbrands with different manufacturing approaches and production scales.
- Movement: Identify who made the caliber, where it originated, and whether the company modifies, rebuilds, or manufactures it.
- U.S. contribution: Look for specific claims about design, assembly, components, casework, dial work, or restoration.
- Fit for purpose: Decide whether you want a daily sports watch, a design-led piece, a traditional mechanical watch, or a low-volume craft object.
- Ownership and aftercare: Confirm current price, stock or lead time, warranty terms, and who will service the watch before buying.
Shortlist: independent U.S.-connected makers and brands
RGM Watch Company — Pennsylvania
RGM is a candidate for buyers who want a mechanical watch connected to U.S. watchmaking history. The cited roundups associate the company with U.S.-made calibers and designs drawing on American pocket-watch traditions. Verify the movement and component provenance of the particular reference: production details should not be assumed to apply to every model.
#1 Best Overall
J.N. Shapiro — California
Joshua Shapiro is known in the cited coverage for engine-turned, or guilloché, dial work. The Resurgence is described as incorporating an in-house dial, case, and movement, making this a craft-led, high-end option rather than a broad entry-level pick. Confirm the configuration and current production details with the company.
Weiss Watch Company
A 2026 consumer guide describes Weiss as manufacturing components in the United States and using a mostly in-house Caliber 1003. Treat those as claims to check against the current model: confirm the company’s present location, the reference’s specifications, and which parts are made in-house versus sourced elsewhere.

Towson Watch Company — Maryland
Towson describes its watches as “Mechanical watches handcrafted start to finish in Maryland — Swiss calibers rebuilt by hand, in editions of one hundred.” That statement is a useful distinction: its U.S. handwork is paired with Swiss-origin calibers, rather than being a claim that the movement originated in the United States. Towson’s company page also lists service and repair support and a two-year warranty; check the terms for the model and purchase date.
1776 Atelier — Texas and Ohio, as described by WatchPoint
WatchPoint’s 2026 overview describes 1776 Atelier as producing small runs and distinguishing parts made in-house from those supplied by specialists. Because location and product details can change, confirm the current workshop, reference specifications, and sourcing directly with the maker.

Keaton P. Myrick
WatchPoint describes Myrick as a WOSTEP graduate and restorer who produces no more than a dozen watches per year, with significant in-house work. That makes him an example of ultra-low-volume independent craft, not a maker to approach as though watches will be readily available on demand. Ask about current commissions, delivery timing, and service arrangements.
Vortic Watch Company — Colorado
Vortic’s distinctive proposition is the restoration of vintage American pocket-watch movements and their installation in custom U.S.-made cases, as described by the consumer guide. This connects the finished watch to historic American movements while giving old components a new case. Confirm the available conversions, condition and origin of the movement, lead time, and aftercare for the specific order.

Perfect for retirees, veterans, teachers, government workers, volunteers, and anyone with a busy lifestyle. If your watch doesn't work upon arrival, try replacing the battery, as it may be dead.
Brew Watch Co. and Nodus — design-led microbrands
Oracle Time’s 2026 roundup includes New York’s Brew Watch Co., whose original concept centered on timing espresso, and Los Angeles-based Nodus, which it presents through sports-watch families. They broaden the shortlist for buyers seeking distinctive everyday or sports-watch design. Their inclusion here does not imply the same degree of movement manufacture as the artisan makers above; check each model’s caliber source and U.S. work separately.

“American brand,” “assembled in the USA,” and “Made in USA” are different claims. A company’s U.S. location establishes neither where its movement was made nor the origin of its components. For a practical comparison, describe the work precisely: for example, a Swiss caliber rebuilt by hand in Maryland is a clearer statement than a blanket claim that the watch is American-made.

The Good Trade’s 2026 guide summarizes FTC guidance as requiring “all or virtually all” components to be domestic for an unqualified Made in USA claim. Because regulatory wording and its application matter, consult the FTC’s current guidance before relying on that summary or making a legal conclusion. For a purchase decision, ask the maker what is domestic on the exact reference and how it defines any origin claim.
Which kind of maker fits your priorities?
- For U.S.-made mechanical components or historical American design: begin with RGM, then verify the exact caliber and components in the model you are considering.
- For dial craft and a high-end, highly worked watch: look at J.N. Shapiro’s Resurgence and confirm its current specification and availability.
- For U.S. handwork paired with an imported caliber: Towson gives a clearly stated example, with Swiss calibers rebuilt by hand in Maryland.
- For vintage American movement reuse: ask Vortic what movement and conversion are available for your order.
- For very low-volume independent making: Keaton P. Myrick is a craft-focused option, subject to commission availability and lead time.
- For small-brand design and everyday wear: compare Brew and Nodus by the particular watch’s movement, dimensions, and service path rather than assuming extensive domestic manufacture.
Questions to settle before placing an order
- Ask for the exact reference and current price. Prices, specifications, and availability can differ across a maker’s range and change over time.
- Request a movement and sourcing breakdown. Ask who made the caliber, where it was made, what work the U.S. workshop performs, and which components come from outside suppliers.
- Confirm delivery terms. For made-to-order and small-run watches, ask whether the piece is in stock, the expected lead time, and what happens if timing changes.
- Get service details in writing. Confirm who can service the movement, whether the maker handles repairs, how to arrange shipping, and what the warranty covers and excludes.
- Check the actual warranty and return terms. Do not assume a brand-wide policy applies unchanged to every reference or purchase channel.
