Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 and W5+ Gen 2 give smartwatch makers a way to add emergency messaging over Skylo’s satellite network when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable. Google’s Pixel Watch 4 was the first announced watch to use the platform, but the processor alone does not make a watch satellite-capable: the finished device also needs the right radio hardware, antenna, software, service integration and regional support.
What Qualcomm announced
On August 20, 2025, Qualcomm introduced two configurations in the same wearable-platform family: Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2. Both use a 4-nanometer SoC architecture and support Skylo’s narrowband non-terrestrial network (NB-NTN) for two-way emergency messaging. Qualcomm described them as the first wearable platforms to support NB-NTN satellite connectivity; that “first” is Qualcomm’s characterization. Qualcomm’s announcement
| Platform | How it differs | Satellite capability |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 | Standard configuration, without the platform’s low-power co-processor. | Supports NB-NTN; a watchmaker must still implement the hardware and service. |
| Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 | Configuration with a low-power co-processor. | Also supports NB-NTN; the same device-level requirements apply. |
Qualcomm positioned the family as an update focused on satellite connectivity, power efficiency, device size, location accuracy and Wear OS integration—not simply as a large CPU-performance jump.
What NB-NTN satellite messaging means
NTN means non-terrestrial network: communications infrastructure that uses satellites rather than conventional cellular towers. NB-NTN is a narrowband form designed to move relatively small amounts of data with low-power devices. That makes it suitable for emergency messages and location information, not broadband internet or ordinary satellite phone service.

Qualcomm says the platforms can send and receive emergency messages through Skylo’s NB-NTN network without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Qualcomm’s W5+ Gen 2 platform details and Qualcomm’s explanation of satellite communications on a watch
In practical terms, a compatible watch may be able to send an SOS and location information and exchange emergency messages, depending on the product’s service design. The feature should not be mistaken for satellite voice calls, web access, unlimited off-grid texting or a general-purpose replacement for a phone.
Why the chip does not guarantee satellite service
The processor provides a capability that a manufacturer can build on; it does not supply the entire satellite connection. A finished watch also needs suitable satellite-capable RF hardware and antenna placement, compatible firmware and operating-system support, an emergency-messaging app or service, network integration such as Skylo’s, and support in the relevant region. Some implementations may require an LTE model rather than a Wi-Fi-only one.
- Check the exact watch model and connectivity variant; do not rely on the processor name alone.
- Confirm supported countries and service terms for the place you intend to use it.
- Check whether messages work without a phone nearby or an active cellular plan; requirements can differ by product and region.
- Find out whether the emergency message goes to a response center, emergency services or designated contacts. Routing is product-specific.
Pixel Watch 4: the first announced W5 Gen 2 implementation
Google’s Pixel Watch 4 was the first announced smartwatch using Snapdragon W5 Gen 2. It runs Wear OS 6 and uses the standard W5 Gen 2; the watch also includes a Cortex-M55 co-processor. The satellite SOS implementation is associated with the LTE model. Tom’s Guide reported that the Wi-Fi model lacks the necessary satellite hardware, so buyers should verify the exact configuration rather than assume the feature is present across the product line. - inReach technology allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
For the Pixel Watch 4, a reported SOS attempt involves selecting the satellite option when ordinary contact is unavailable, following the watch’s prompts to position and orient it, then waiting for the connection so the emergency message and location can be sent. A relatively unobstructed view of the sky helps. Trees, buildings, canyon walls, mountains, severe weather and the wearer’s position can make satellite acquisition or messaging harder.
Tom’s Guide reported establishing a connection in under 30 seconds during a clear-sky hands-on test. That is one reviewer’s result under those conditions, not a promised connection time. The same coverage reported availability in the contiguous United States at the time of testing; coverage and service terms can change, so check current support for your location.
Limits to keep in mind
- Sky access matters. Indoor, underground, heavily wooded or obstructed terrain can prevent a connection or delay it.
- Messages are narrowband and emergency-focused. Do not count on broadband data, voice calling or unrestricted routine messaging.
- Availability depends on the product and region. Network, regulatory, software and emergency-service support all affect whether the feature works where you are.
- Battery is finite. Satellite acquisition and GPS use consume power; a watch’s everyday battery performance does not establish how long it can support a prolonged emergency.
- An SOS is not a rescue guarantee. Satellite contact cannot ensure that a message succeeds or that help arrives quickly.
For extended expeditions or routine off-grid check-ins, a purpose-built satellite communicator is a more appropriate tool than relying on a smartwatch alone.
Other W5 Gen 2 improvements—and what the claims mean
Location accuracy
Qualcomm says Location Machine Learning 3.0 can improve GPS positioning accuracy by up to 50% compared with the previous generation, particularly in difficult environments such as dense cities and deep canyons. This is a Qualcomm platform claim, not a guarantee for every watch: results depend on the device’s GNSS hardware, antenna, software and implementation, as well as the comparison baseline. RF front end and power
Qualcomm says its optimized radio-frequency front end (RFFE) is approximately 20% smaller than the previous generation. That refers to the component, not the whole watch. A smaller component may give manufacturers more layout flexibility, but it does not mean a finished watch is 20% smaller or lasts 20% longer. Battery life still depends on battery capacity, display, GPS and modem use, software and manufacturer tuning.
Performance
Independent coverage characterizes the main gains as satellite connectivity, efficiency, location features and design flexibility rather than a dramatic CPU-performance increase. A watch’s real-world speed and battery life depend on its complete hardware and software design, not the platform label alone. Android Central’s W5 Gen 2 coverage

Who should consider a satellite-capable smartwatch?
A watch with emergency satellite messaging can be useful to hikers, travelers and outdoor users who want an SOS option available on the wrist, especially if retrieving a phone is difficult. Its value depends on the exact model, supported region, message routing and sky conditions—not just the processor.
If you need recurring off-grid messaging, check-ins or tracking over longer trips, compare a smartwatch with a dedicated communicator such as Garmin’s inReach devices. They are purpose-built for satellite communication, but add another device to carry and a subscription requirement. Garmin’s satellite communicator category
Apple’s Watch Ultra line is another smartwatch-category option to consider within Apple’s ecosystem; it is a poor fit for Android users because of platform requirements. Compare the actual emergency features and regional availability of a specific model rather than assuming different brands’ satellite services work the same way. Apple Watch
The practical distinction is convenience versus capability: a wrist-worn SOS can be there when a phone is not immediately accessible, while dedicated communicators are designed for sustained off-grid use.
