Check for the update, restart both devices, then retry setup in Galaxy Wearable. If pairing still fails, work through the app and watch recovery steps below before assuming either device is faulty.
What the August update does—and does not—fix
The relevant update is the August 2025 Google Play system update, not an August 2026 update. Users began reporting successful setup after Pixel 10 devices received the update, sometimes after restarting the phone or resetting the watch. Android Authority also reported an apparent improvement, but the evidence is user reports and secondary coverage rather than a Google changelog that names the Galaxy Watch 8 bug. Google Pixel Community reports describe successful pairing, while Android Authority’s coverage discusses the apparent fix.
Google’s August 2025 Wear OS bulletin documents the security-update context and explains the August 1, 2025 date convention for Google Play system updates on Android 10 and newer. It does not identify this Pixel-and-watch pairing problem by name. The update is therefore best described as linked to a fix that helped many users, not a guarantee that every Galaxy Watch will pair or remain connected.
What failed during setup
Reports included matching PIN or pairing codes being rejected, Galaxy Wearable setup stopping around 80% to 86%, repeated pairing requests, and Bluetooth connections that appeared briefly before dropping. Some users also got stuck while connecting a Google account. In some reports, the watch’s battery drained after it failed to maintain its Bluetooth connection. These are user-observed symptoms, not a universal failure point or proof that every symptom has the same cause. The original Pixel Community reports include examples of setup failures and device details.

Which Pixel phones and Galaxy Watches were involved?
The clearest reports concern Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL owners setting up a Galaxy Watch 8 or Watch 8 Classic. Other reports included Galaxy Watch Ultra models from 2024 and 2025, as well as some older Galaxy Watches. The problem affected a subset of device combinations; it was not reported by every Pixel 10 owner or every Galaxy Watch owner. A Pixel Community report describes a Galaxy Watch 8 on Wear OS 6.0 failing with a Pixel 10 Pro on Android 16 even though the watch paired with a Galaxy Z Fold 6 and a Pixel 9 Pro XL. Similar reports involving other watches are summarized by Android Authority.
Check the Google Play system update on your Pixel
Do not rely only on a general “phone is up to date” message. Android security updates, Google Play system updates, Google Play services, Galaxy Wearable, and watch firmware are separate components. The historical target associated with this pairing improvement was generally a Google Play system date of August 1, 2025; availability and component versions could vary by device and region.

- On the Pixel, open Settings.
- Tap About phone, then Android version.
- Tap Google Play system update.
- Install any available update and note the date shown there.
- Restart the phone after installation, then reopen Galaxy Wearable and try setup again.
Menu labels can vary by Android build. If the update is not offered, check again later rather than installing an unverified package: Google Play system components can roll out separately from the main Android update. The date shown in the Google Play system update screen is distinct from the Android security patch date. Pixel Community discussion illustrates the confusion between Google Play system updates and other Google components.
Retry pairing in the least disruptive order
1. Update Samsung’s companion apps
In Google Play, check for updates to Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, Smart Switch if installed, and any Galaxy Watch plug-in or accessory component offered for the watch. Reports do not establish that an app update alone fixes the bug, but outdated or stale companion-app state is a practical factor to rule out.

2. Restart both devices
Restart the Pixel and the Galaxy Watch, then retry. Some users reported successful pairing after rebooting following the Play system update. Those reports do not show that a restart is sufficient in every case.
3. Begin setup in Galaxy Wearable
Open Galaxy Wearable and follow its on-screen setup flow. Avoid manually pairing the watch first from the Pixel’s Bluetooth settings unless you are specifically troubleshooting an existing Bluetooth connection. Google’s Wear OS setup guidance also directs users to begin in the watch’s companion app and confirm matching codes there.

If pairing still fails
Clear Galaxy Wearable’s cache, then its data if needed
- On the Pixel, open Settings and tap Apps.
- Select Galaxy Wearable, then Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache and try setup again.
- If that does not help, return to the same screen and tap Clear storage or Clear data (the label varies by Android version).
- If needed, repeat for Samsung Health, Smart Switch, and the relevant watch plug-in; restart the phone and retry setup.
Clearing storage or data removes app configuration and may require signing in to your Samsung account again. This is a user-reported troubleshooting measure, not a fix Google prescribed. Community troubleshooting reports describe clearing Samsung app state.
Simplify the setup attempt
Some users reported that temporarily disabling mobile data or cellular connectivity while keeping Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled helped. Others skipped Samsung-account sign-in until setup was complete, rebooted the watch, or used its built-in transfer-to-new-phone flow when moving from another Android phone. These are anecdotal workarounds, not dependable fixes. One Pixel Community discussion describes simplified setup attempts.

Reset the watch only after considering data loss
If the watch was paired to another phone, it may need to be disconnected or reset before setup on the Pixel. Some users needed a factory reset after the update; others paired without one. Before resetting, sync health and activity data if possible, make sure you know the Samsung and Google account credentials, and understand that local watch apps, settings, and data will be erased. Google confirms that a Wear OS factory reset disconnects the watch from its previous phone and erases watch data in its setup instructions. Do not repeatedly reset before checking that the Pixel has received the relevant update. Reports of mixed results are documented in the Pixel Community thread.
How to interpret the result
- Setup completes: The update and retry resolved your case; it does not establish that every Pixel-and-watch combination is fixed.
- Setup still stops near 80–86% or rejects a matching code: Clear companion-app cache and, if necessary, data. If the watch was previously used, consider its transfer flow or a reset after backing up what you can.
- The watch pairs, then disconnects: That is a connection-stability problem rather than only an initial pairing failure. Restart both devices and check for updates to the phone, watch, and companion apps.
- The Play system update is unavailable: Wait and check again through Settings rather than sideloading a package from an unofficial source.
- You have an older Tizen watch such as a Galaxy Watch Active2: A missing or discontinued plug-in may be a separate compatibility issue, not the Pixel 10 regression. A separate Pixel Community discussion concerns that model.
Different update rollout timing, stale app or Bluetooth state, prior-phone links, watch firmware, regional builds, and more than one underlying failure are possible reasons reports differ; the available reports do not establish which explanation applies in any individual case. Google distinguishes watch system software from phone app versions in its Wear OS update guidance.
