Choose a Tough Solar G-Shock if you want to replenish its rechargeable battery with light and are comfortable keeping it exposed to light regularly. Choose a GA-010 or GD-010 if you prefer a conventional battery and value Casio’s estimate of approximately 10 years of battery life. The right pick depends on the exact model’s features and how you use it—not just the power label.

How the two power systems differ

Tough Solar: recharge with light

Casio says Tough Solar uses a solar cell on the watch face to convert light into electrical energy, storing excess energy in a rechargeable battery. It can charge from sunlight and weaker sources such as fluorescent lighting, and can use power-save mode when left in darkness. It is not battery-free: it depends on light exposure over time to replenish its stored energy. Casio’s Tough Solar technology overview explains the system.

Long-life battery: replace eventually

Casio describes the GA-010 and GD-010 series as offering approximately 10 years of battery life through a high-capacity conventional battery and a low-power design. That is the manufacturer’s estimate for those model families, not a guarantee for every watch or usage pattern. Casio’s GA-010/GD-010 page lists the series and its features.

What the published battery-life figures mean

Solar reserve figures depend on the model and conditions. Casio’s U.S. solar page gives the GAB2100-1A an estimate of seven months without recharging after a full charge under normal use, or up to 18 months in total darkness with power-save enabled. Separately, Casio’s Europe technology page describes a darkness reserve of up to 24 months. These are distinct published descriptions, not a single endurance guarantee that applies to every Tough Solar model. Casio’s U.S. solar product page provides the GAB2100-1A figures.

For the GA-010 and GD-010, Casio’s approximately 10-year figure is also a maker estimate rather than a promise of a fixed service interval. The cited pages do not provide an independent head-to-head battery-life test, nor do they quantify how a particular owner’s use of alarms, lighting, connectivity, or other functions will affect actual runtime.

Compare the models’ features, not just their batteries

The cited examples are not equivalent watches with different power sources. The GA-B010 is an analog-digital Tough Solar model with Bluetooth smartphone link and step tracking. Casio says its step-tracking function consumes about 40% less power than the previous GBA-800; that comparison concerns step-tracking power consumption, not overall watch life. See Casio’s GA-B010 page.

Casio lists functions such as alarms, LED lighting, a stopwatch, a countdown timer, and world time for the GA-010/GD-010 models. Check the specification page for the particular SKU you are considering: features on one model should not be assumed to appear on another.
