If theft appears likely, contact local police or the relevant authority as well. Keep your travel, ownership, and value records: an airline report alone may not meet a formal claim deadline, and compensation is not guaranteed to match the watch’s value.
What to do first
- Report it to the airline promptly. If you are still at the airport, contact the airline’s baggage service team before leaving. Ask for a written incident or mishandled-baggage report and its reference number, and record whom you spoke with. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) advises reporting baggage problems before leaving the airport when possible. DOT: Lost, Delayed, or Damaged Baggage.
- File a separate written complaint or claim. Use the airline’s official claim channel and save the confirmation and a copy of what you submitted. A property-irregularity report or baggage form may not count as the separate written complaint required by the applicable rules. The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), for example, explicitly says a PIR or baggage claim does not replace contacting the airline in writing. Deadlines vary by itinerary and circumstances. CTA: Flight delays and cancellations: A guide.
- Report suspected theft to local authorities. If the circumstances suggest someone stole the watch, contact local police or the appropriate local authority and ask for a report or reference number. Some travel-insurance policies require prompt reporting of theft; your policy’s wording controls.
- Check whether the loss happened at security screening. If the watch went missing during screening rather than from a checked bag while in airline care, use the screening agency’s claim process. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) handles property lost or damaged during screening and directs checked-baggage matters to the airline. TSA: Claims. The Federal Aviation Administration also points people reporting missing or stolen baggage items to TSA’s website: FAA: How do I report items stolen or missing from my baggage?.
What evidence to gather
Make a single file of the documents and details that show what you traveled with, what went missing, and what it was worth. Send copies through the airline or insurer’s requested channel and keep the originals.

- Baggage tag, itinerary, boarding information, and flight details.
- Airline incident report number, written complaint, and submission confirmation.
- Purchase receipt, appraisal or valuation, photographs, and the watch’s make, model, and serial number.
- Any insurance schedule or other document showing the watch was specifically insured.
- Police or local-authority report number or copy, if you reported suspected theft.
DOT notes that airlines may ask for receipts or other evidence for valuable items. TSA’s claim instructions also request supporting details such as receipts, appraisals, and flight information. Do not mail away your only copy of a document.
How airline compensation limits work
A baggage-liability ceiling is not a promise to reimburse the watch’s full value, nor does it mean every claim receives the maximum. The applicable amount depends on the route, carrier, facts, and rules governing the trip.

| Travel context | Published baggage limit or guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. domestic travel | DOT says U.S. airlines may cap baggage liability at $4,700 per passenger. | This is a maximum permitted cap, not an automatic payment or a watch-specific valuation. DOT baggage guidance. |
| Most international travel covered by the Montreal Convention | DOT lists a maximum of 1,519 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger, approximately $2,175 USD on its page. | The airline may pay more but is not required to; check whether the itinerary and carrier are covered. The stated USD approximation is the figure on DOT’s page. DOT baggage guidance. |
| Flights covered by current Canadian guidance | CTA lists 1,519 SDR for flights on or after December 28, 2024. | CTA says a lost-baggage claim should be filed as soon as possible. Its stated deadlines include seven days after receipt for damaged baggage and 21 days after receipt for delayed international baggage; these are Canadian instructions, not universal deadlines. Missing the applicable deadline may result in denial. CTA claim guidance. |
Canada’s Carriage by Air Act page reproduces older Montreal Convention text showing 1,000 SDR. For flights on or after December 28, 2024, use the CTA’s current 1,519 SDR guidance rather than treating that older reproduced figure as the current limit. Canada: Carriage by Air Act.
Check your insurance separately
Contact the travel insurer, homeowners insurer, or valuables insurer promptly and ask which policy, if any, may apply. Do not assume that a policy covering baggage or theft automatically covers this watch or this situation.

- Is this type of loss covered, and does the policy require the watch to have been scheduled or separately listed?
- What are the per-item limit and deductible?
- Which exclusions apply, and what proof of ownership, value, travel, or theft is required?
- What are the notice and proof-of-loss deadlines, and how should the claim be submitted?
Policy terms differ. For example, a 2025 Travel Insured policy specimen calls for prompt local-authority reporting for theft, receipts if available, and a complete item list; it specifies its own notice and proof-of-loss periods. That specimen’s 20-day notice and 90-day proof-of-loss periods are policy-specific, not general deadlines. Check the policy that actually covers you. Travel Insured: Policies.
