SOTC means “State Of The Watch Collection”: a snapshot of what a collector owns and, just as importantly, what they reach for now. When a collection grows, the useful question is not how many watches are enough; it is whether the watches still suit your interests, wearing habits, space and budget.
What a growing-collection SOTC should show
A collection update is more than an inventory. It can capture how your preferences have shifted: which watches are being worn, which have become less relevant, and whether a change such as a new strap has made a watch more appealing. A podcast episode listing uses SOTC for a current-collection rundown, while a 2013 watch-collecting post discusses both modern and vintage watches and the author’s preference for a smaller, more manageable set. Decide what growth means for you
There is no established ideal number of watches. In a Reddit discussion about a growing collection, commenters express different views about quantity, variety and downsizing; those opinions are personal, not a consensus. Use your own experience to judge whether adding watches is improving your collection or making it harder to enjoy.

- Purpose: What does each watch add—different design, history, function, or an occasion you enjoy dressing for?
- Variety: Do you want distinct choices, or are several watches filling much the same role?
- Wear: Which watches have you actually worn lately, and which are you keeping mainly for a reason that still matters to you?
- Practical limits: Does the collection fit your available storage and budget without creating pressure to buy or maintain more?
These are prompts for a personal decision, not a scoring system. A smaller collection can be easier for one person to manage; another may value having more variety.

Make rotation easier to live with
There is no need to give every watch equal wrist time. A rotation can simply mean choosing among the watches you own according to what you want to wear. A Reddit poster asks whether it is possible to bond deeply with one watch when there are many to rotate through. That captures a real personal tension, but it is not evidence that a large collection prevents attachment. If choosing feels burdensome, try keeping a smaller selection accessible and storing the rest safely; if you enjoy choosing from the full set, there is no need to impose a rotation rule.

Include straps in the update, but confirm fit
Straps can change how a watch looks and feels in rotation. The Half Past The Hour post mentions one watch needing a new strap and another shown on a different strap style. Treat that as a reminder to consider straps when reviewing a collection, not as proof that a particular strap suits another watch. Before buying a replacement or alternate, confirm compatibility with the specific watch.

A useful SOTC is a record, not a target
When you revisit your collection, note what you own, what you have been wearing, and what has changed in your preferences or practical needs. If a watch no longer earns its place by your own standards, you can reconsider it; if a collection is growing and still feels enjoyable and manageable, growth itself is not a problem.
