Fratello’s Speedmaster Get-Together in central Munich on October 28, 2017, brought about 40 invited collectors together to talk watches and inspect one another’s Speedmasters. Guests brought about 60 watches, while Omega supplied a separate display of museum pieces. The gathering was held alongside MunichTime; it was a community event, not a product launch.

When and why the Munich GTG took place

Fratello published its firsthand account by Robert-Jan Broer on November 7, 2017. The gathering itself took place on October 28 in central Munich, on a weekend when MunichTime was also underway. Broer said Fratello chose Munich both because of the watch fair and because Germany was an important audience for its Speedy Tuesday coverage. In the report, Germany ranked third among Fratello readers’ countries of origin, after the United States and the United Kingdom. These were the organizer’s 2017 reasons and audience figures, not a general measure of watch-market interest. Fratello’s event report

How many people and watches were there?

Fratello said it received many registrations but could invite about 40 people because of security and logistical limits. Broer counted about 60 watches brought by guests, not including the pieces Omega brought for display. Both figures are approximate numbers from the organizer’s 2017 account, not independently audited attendance or inventory counts.

What guests brought

The guest collection mixed modern editions with vintage and unusual references. Broer noted ten Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday watches, two gold Speedmaster Professional watches, original Racing models, vintage CK2998 and 145.012 examples, Alaska IV LCDs, and Speedmaster 60th-anniversary models. The variety made the watches a subject of conversation as much as a display: guests could compare what they owned, wore, and collected.

What Omega displayed

Omega Germany and Omega headquarters supported the gathering with watches and other pieces for attendees to examine. Among them was a Missions Case containing 22 Speedmasters with mission patches on the 9 o’clock subdial, a Speedmaster ’57 re-edition, a loupe, and a spare caliber 1861 movement. Broer reported that 40 Missions Cases had been made and sold, with two further batches of five produced for non-commercial purposes, for 50 in total. Those production figures are as reported in the 2017 event account.

Other Omega display pieces included an X-33 prototype from 1996 and a then-current X-33; a gold Speedmaster Professional “Panda” made for the Japanese market in 1997; the original 1969 Speedmaster Racing; and a 1970 Alaska II prototype with a white dial and thick bezel. The report also mentions then-current Dark Side of the Moon, Master Chronometer Moonphase, and caliber 9900/9901 Racing models. Those descriptions reflect the lineup discussed in 2017, not Omega’s present range.

A deliberately informal collector gathering

The event included a short introduction and time to view Omega’s display, but the schedule was otherwise intentionally loose. Attendees had room to talk and look at each other’s watches rather than follow a product-presentation program. That format matched Broer’s description of Speedy Tuesday as a community built around Speedmaster enthusiasts and their interest in the chronograph—not just a watch or a hashtag.

For the Munich attendees, the distinction between guest-owned watches and Omega’s museum or display pieces gave the gathering two complementary sides: collectors sharing watches from their own collections, and a chance to see rare historical examples and prototypes together in one place.
