Straum’s Jan Mayen Basalt Limited Edition is a 100-piece series, shared across three dial variants: Magma Red, Radiant Mist and Volcanic Grey. Each combines a thin basalt wafer with a colored dial base; the most distinctive treatment is Radiant Mist’s fully lumed, fumé base. Straum announced the watches on October 14, 2024, at a launch price of €1,900 excluding VAT. Its limited-edition catalog currently marks all three variants sold out, so that launch price and availability should not be treated as a current offer.
What makes the Jan Mayen Basalt editions different?
The defining feature is a wafer of basalt set over a coated brass dial base. Straum says the wafer patterns are unique and describes a careful process of cutting, stabilizing, polishing and bonding the fragile stone. The company says the basalt was collected during an expedition to Jan Mayen; that account, including its statement that permits were obtained from the Norwegian government because much of the island is a protected nature reserve, is Straum’s own. Straum’s October 14, 2024 announcement does not provide independent verification of the expedition or permitting.

The three watches share the basalt construction, case, movement and bracelet. Their main difference is the dial treatment and resulting visual character:
| Variant | Dial treatment | Visual distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Magma Red | Basalt wafer over a red sunburst base | The warm, volcanic-color option |
| Radiant Mist | Basalt wafer over a fully lumed base plate with fumé treatment; Straum describes the glow as fading outward from the center | The only variant with a specifically described lumed base and gradient glow |
| Volcanic Grey | Basalt wafer over a grey sunburst base | The restrained, monochromatic option |
Straum does not publish independent lume measurements, so Radiant Mist’s treatment should not be read as proof of a particular brightness or duration. The release describes all three as part of one 100-piece series—not 100 pieces of each color.
