TAG Heuer Aquaracer 300 Calibre 16 Chronograph Review: CAY2112 vs CAY211A

The Aquaracer 300 Calibre 16 Chronograph spans multiple references. Here’s how the blue CAY2112 and black CAY211A differ, what TAG Heuer specifies, and what to verify before buying used.

The TAG Heuer Aquaracer 300 Calibre 16 Chronograph is a family, not one single specification. This guide focuses on two documented 43 mm examples—blue-dial CAY2112.BA0927 and black-dial CAY211A.BA0927—and separates their published features from the earlier Aquaracer chronographs that helped establish the line. Both cited product pages mark their models discontinued, so verify the reference and condition of any watch offered for sale.

Which Aquaracer Calibre 16 reference is this?

Start with the reference number, not just the name on the dial. TAG Heuer’s official history traces several Aquaracer Calibre 16 chronographs across different generations, sizes and layouts. The specifications below belong to the named references; they should not be combined into a fictional “generic” model.

Reference What TAG Heuer documents Important distinction
CAY2112.BA0927 43 mm steel case, blue sunray-brushed dial, steel turning bezel, steel bracelet, 300 m water resistance; the official page marks it discontinued. TAG Heuer also publishes thickness and lug distance for this reference: 15.81 mm and 21.50 mm.
CAY211A.BA0927 43 mm steel case, black dial, steel bracelet, steel-and-ceramic turning bezel, 300 m water resistance; the official page marks it discontinued. The cited page does not give all the dimensions published for the CAY2112. Do not assume its thickness or lug distance is identical.
CAF2110 TAG Heuer’s collector guide identifies it as the first Aquaracer Calibre 16 Chronograph, introduced in 2005 in a 41 mm case with black, blue and silver dial options. This earlier 41 mm reference is not the 43 mm CAY2112 or CAY211A.
CAF2010 The 2006 follow-up had a 43 mm case and Day-Date display. It is a Day-Date model, unlike the date-only CAY2112 and CAY211A.

TAG Heuer’s CAY2112.BA0927 product page and CAY211A.BA0927 product page are the relevant manufacturer references for those specific variants. The brand’s 2022 Aquaracer collector guide supplies the earlier history.

What are the CAY2112 specifications?

For the blue-dial CAY2112.BA0927, TAG Heuer lists an automatic Calibre 16 movement, 48-hour power reserve and 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). Its chronograph display includes a quarter-second indication, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter; the watch also displays the date. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent timing or operation test results.

  • Tag Heuer Aquaracer Automatic Blue Dial Men's Watch WBP2010.BA0632
Published detail CAY2112.BA0927
Case diameter 43 mm
Case thickness 15.81 mm
Lug distance 21.50 mm
Water resistance 300 m
Case and bezel Fine-brushed and polished steel case; steel turning bezel
Crown and caseback Screw-down steel crown; plain steel caseback
Dial and bracelet Blue sunray-brushed dial; steel bracelet
Movement Automatic Calibre 16; 28,800 vph (4 Hz); 48-hour reserve
Functions Hours, minutes, date; quarter-second chronograph display; 30-minute and 12-hour counters

The 300 m rating is the manufacturer’s stated specification, not confirmation that a particular pre-owned watch remains water-resistant. Seals age and condition varies, so a used example should not be treated as dive-ready solely because the model was originally rated to that depth.

How does the CAY211A differ from the CAY2112?

TAG Heuer’s black-dial CAY211A.BA0927 shares the published 43 mm case diameter, 300 m rating and Calibre 16 headline specifications: automatic movement, 48-hour reserve and 28,800 vph (4 Hz), with date and chronograph counters for 30 minutes and 12 hours. Its most visible documented difference is the steel-and-ceramic turning bezel rather than the CAY2112’s steel turning bezel; it also has a black dial instead of blue.

  • 43 mm brushed and polished stainless steel case with a uni-directional rotating bezel
  • Black dial with date display
  • Brushed stainless steel bracelet
  • Swiss automatic movement

The official CAY211A page does not provide every dimension listed for the CAY2112. In particular, the CAY2112’s 15.81 mm thickness and 21.50 mm lug distance should not be transferred to the black reference without a reference-specific source.

How did the Aquaracer 300 Calibre 16 chronograph develop?

TAG Heuer places the Aquaracer in a dive-watch lineage that began in 1978, followed by the 2000 Series and the Aquaracer naming. In its 2022 collector guide, the brand calls CAF2110 the first Aquaracer Calibre 16 Chronograph: it arrived in 2005 with a 41 mm case and black, blue or silver dial. CAF2010 followed in 2006 as a 43 mm Day-Date model. The guide distinguishes the earlier models’ round versus rectangular chronograph pushers.

The family later included 300 m and 500 m versions. TAG Heuer’s history describes Calibre 16 reference CAP2112 within the 300 m family, as well as later 43 mm chronographs with steel or ceramic bezels. This range explains why the name alone is insufficient to identify dimensions, date layout or bezel material.

Is the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre 16 discontinued?

The cited US specification pages for CAY2112.BA0927 and CAY211A.BA0927 both label their watches discontinued. That establishes the status shown on those pages, not whether an individual authorized retailer or reseller has stock. Prices displayed on a discontinued product page are not current pre-owned market values, and the evidence here does not establish a current transaction price.

A useful modern point of comparison is the Aquaracer Professional 300 Date described by TAG Heuer in 2024. That watch has a 42 mm case, 300 m water resistance, a unidirectional twelve-sided ceramic bezel and the COSC-certified TH31-00 manufacture movement, rated at 28,800 vph with up to 80 hours of reserve. It is a date watch, not a like-for-like automatic chronograph. See TAG Heuer’s 2024 Professional 300 article for that model’s description.

What should you check before buying a used example?

Since the cited references are discontinued, a prospective buyer is likely to encounter individual pre-owned watches rather than rely on the product page alone. Check the watch itself, its documentation and the seller’s claims; no model-level specification can establish the condition of a particular example.

  1. Match the reference. Confirm the case or documentation identifies the intended model, such as CAY2112.BA0927 or CAY211A.BA0927. Verify that the dial, bezel, bracelet and date layout correspond to that reference.
  2. Review provenance and service records. Ask for available paperwork and service documentation, and assess the seller’s reputation and return terms. A stated service history should be supported by records where possible.
  3. Assess condition in person or through reliable documentation. Look for clear images and descriptions of the case, bezel, crystal, bracelet and clasp. The specifications do not establish that any used watch is original, undamaged or functioning correctly.
  4. Verify water resistance before exposure to water. Have the specific watch inspected and pressure-tested by an appropriate service provider. Do not rely on the original 300 m rating as proof that its seals remain sound.
  5. Compare actual asking prices carefully. Check current listings for the same reference and condition rather than treating an old manufacturer price as a market benchmark. No live listing or transaction-price data is established here.

What this review can—and cannot—establish

The manufacturer pages provide concrete reference-level specifications, while TAG Heuer’s collector guide provides a useful historical sequence. They do not establish hands-on comfort, perceived wrist size, measured timekeeping accuracy, chronograph operation quality, durability in use or owner satisfaction. Those judgments require examination of an actual watch or independent test evidence.
