The TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500M Calibre 5 is a discontinued historical dive-watch family introduced in 2009, not one single reference with a universal case or dial specification. TAG Heuer’s history places the end of the 500m series with the Aquaracer generation introduced in 2014. Its 500-metre rating and design distinguish it from later 300m Calibre 5 Aquaracers—and from today’s separate Professional 500 Date.
What is the TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500M Calibre 5?
It is the automatic Calibre 5 branch of TAG Heuer’s Aquaracer 500-metre dive-watch family. The family debuted in 2009 and also included quartz versions. Because “Aquaracer 500M Calibre 5” identifies a model family rather than a supplied reference number, it does not establish one exact case size, material, dial, bracelet or production year for every example. TAG Heuer’s Aquaracer collector’s guide is the source for the family chronology and design evolution.
Where does it fit in the Aquaracer timeline?
2009: the 500m family arrives
TAG Heuer dates the first Aquaracer 500m to 2009. The first-generation design had an angular case, a rubber-ridged bezel with applied metal numerals, an oversized crown and a helium escape valve. The Calibre 5 and quartz versions had vertical ribbing on the dial and a date window at 9 o’clock with a magnifier.
2012: revised design
TAG Heuer describes a design revision in 2012. That change means visual details should be tied to a specific generation or reference rather than assumed to apply to every 500m watch.

2014: the 500m line gives way to 300m models
TAG Heuer says the 500m series ended with the Aquaracer generation introduced in 2014. That generation included distinct 300m families. The 2014 Calibre 5 was a 40.5 mm steel 300m model; a later 2015 ceramic-bezel 300m Calibre 5 was another separate design. Neither should be described as a 500m Calibre 5 simply because it shares the Aquaracer name and movement family.
What features define the Aquaracer 500 M?
TAG Heuer’s Calibre 5, 7 and 9 user guide lists these specifications for the Aquaracer 500 M:

- Crystal: scratch-resistant sapphire.
- Legibility: luminous hands and markers.
- Helium escape valve: automatic, according to the guide.
- Bracelet clasp: the guide says steel models have a folding clasp with push buttons and a diving extension.
- Date magnifier: the guide notes a magnifying glass at 9 o’clock as model-dependent; TAG Heuer’s history specifically associates the 9 o’clock date and magnifier with the initial Calibre 5 and quartz design.
The same guide gives approximately 38 hours of running time when its self-winding mechanical movement is fully wound. This is the manual’s general figure, not a measurement of a particular watch or a guarantee for a pre-owned example.
How does it differ from later 300m Calibre 5 Aquaracers?
The key difference is the model generation and its stated depth rating. A 500m Calibre 5 belongs to the historical 500m family that began in 2009; later Calibre 5 Aquaracers include distinct 300m designs. The 2014 300m Calibre 5, for example, had a 40.5 mm steel case, while the 2015 300m model used a ceramic bezel. Those details describe those models, not the 500m family as a whole.

For a specific watch, compare its reference and physical features rather than relying on a seller’s broad title. Check the case-back markings, bezel, dial layout, case and movement documentation against the claimed reference. The family name alone does not settle the exact size, materials or generation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the same as today’s Aquaracer Professional 500 Date?
No. The current US TAG Heuer product page for the Aquaracer Professional 500 Date WBP5183.BF0010 describes a separate 42 mm titanium model with a Calibre TH30-00 COSC movement and 500m water resistance. Those are current-page specifications for that reference, not specifications for the historical Calibre 5 family. The shared 500m rating does not make the watches the same generation or movement.

What should you check before buying or diving with one?
Identify the exact reference
Ask for the reference number and clear photographs of the dial, case, case back, crown, bezel and clasp. Use these details to determine which generation and configuration the watch claims to be. Do not infer a production year or exact specification from “500M Calibre 5” alone.
Separate the rating from the condition of the watch
The 500 m / 1640 ft figure is TAG Heuer’s stated rating for the model, not proof that an older or unserviced individual watch remains watertight. TAG Heuer’s guide advises checking the case-back engraving for water-resistance information. Before using a pre-owned example for diving, have its seals and water resistance checked by a qualified watch service provider; no individual watch’s present condition can be established from the model name.
Check movement and service evidence
Confirm the watch is being represented as the automatic Calibre 5 version, rather than a quartz variant, and ask for available service records. The manufacturer’s approximately 38-hour fully wound figure is general guidance for the self-winding mechanical movement, not a test result for the watch being offered.
