Terra Cielo Mare Orienteering: How Its Sun Compass Works

The Terra Cielo Mare Orienteering pairs a mechanical watch with a sun compass. Here’s how the bezel works and what distinguishes documented references.

The Terra Cielo Mare Orienteering is a mechanical wristwatch with a practical sun-compass function: align its hour indication with the sun, then turn the marked bezel to read cardinal directions. The details differ by reference, so the compass concept is more consistent than any single universal spec sheet.

How does the Orienteering watch work as a compass?

The Orienteering uses the sun and the watch’s hour indication to establish direction. Once the hour indication is aligned with the sun, rotate the marked bezel or outer disc as directed by that reference to identify the cardinal points. In the El Alamein hands-on, the bezel’s rotating outer disc is adjusted after pairing the hour with the sun; the markings then indicate the directions. This is an analog sun compass, not an electronic compass or a magnetic-direction sensor. Horbiter’s El Alamein hands-on describes the mechanism.

Giovanni Di Biase wrote in Horbiter on 22 March 2021: “When the Orienteering was born in 2010, its originality lied in the simplicity of its function, actually in the most original function that one can achieve when crafting a three-hands-watch; the sun compass.” The sentence describes the design idea; it is not a manufacturer specification.

Night-sky orientation on the El Alamein

The El Alamein’s caseback depicts the North Star for the northern hemisphere and the Southern Cross for the southern hemisphere, offering a separate night-orientation cue. That detail belongs to the described El Alamein version and should not be assumed for every Orienteering reference. Horbiter’s review also dates the Orienteering’s origin to 2010 and calls the El Alamein the second version.

What distinguishes the documented Orienteering versions?

Published descriptions show a family of watches rather than one fixed configuration. The following details are tied to the named version and source.

Reference Documented details Important qualification
El Alamein Horbiter’s 2021 hands-on describes a titanium, PVD-treated multi-part case, ochre dial, date display and rotating outer disc; it also describes the night-sky caseback. These are details of the reviewed El Alamein, not a universal Orienteering specification. Source
Blue Titanium Sutor House lists a 44 mm case, ETA 2824 automatic movement, left-side time-setting crown, separate bezel-control crown at 2 o’clock, and 100 m water resistance. The retailer page was marked out of stock when inspected; its displayed $2,495 price and stock status are a listing snapshot, not current market guidance. Source
BP Le Calibre describes a 44 mm titanium case, ETA 2824 automatic movement with date, anti-reflective scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, 10 atm water resistance, and a 24-hour bezel with cardinal marks. The 10 atm figure is the BP specification reported by Le Calibre and should not be substituted for another reference’s rating. Source
Cerro Torre Horbiter reports a dial made using rock from the mountain and a 20-piece production run. Its review says the ETA 2824 movement has a date disc, while the dial has no date window. L’Orologio reported 20 numbered pieces and a €2,850 retail price in 2016; Horbiter also gives €2,850 as a historical price. Neither figure establishes today’s resale value. Horbiter · L’Orologio

What should you check before buying one?

Because the specifications vary and current availability is not established by these listings, evaluate the exact reference rather than relying on the Orienteering name alone.

  • PERFECT BACK-UP MAP COMPASS - Use Slip-On Wrist Compass as a back up to your primary compass to ensure you are headed in the right direction. One of the necessary accessories for outdoor, hiking, camping, or survival gear.
  • EXTREMELY DURABLE - ABS housing and a cushion-mounted compass makes Slip-On Wrist Compass very durable. A great gift that is long lasting and reliable in any situation.

  • FITS MOST WATCH BANDS - Slip-On Wrist Compass fits snugly on most standard sized watch bands and can also be attached to homemade paracord bracelets. Just slip the compass on to the band for preferred placement.
  • Reference and configuration: Confirm the model name and reference number against the watch, paperwork and seller listing.
  • Case and finish: Check material and treatment; the El Alamein, Blue Titanium, BP and Cerro Torre descriptions are not interchangeable.
  • Movement and date: Ask whether the watch displays a date. The Cerro Torre is a documented exception: its movement has a date disc, but its dial has no date window.
  • Compass controls: Verify how the bezel is operated on that reference. The Blue Titanium listing describes a dedicated crown at 2 o’clock, while the El Alamein review describes a rotating outer disc.
  • Water resistance and condition: Use the rating reported for the exact reference, and have the watch’s present condition assessed rather than assuming an older rating remains valid.
  • Crystal, strap and fit: Confirm the crystal and included strap, and require explicit confirmation of fit before buying an accessory. Le Calibre mentions a separately sold carbon-fibre strap for the Concrete version but does not establish compatibility with other references.
  • Seller, stock and provenance: Check present inventory, seller status, service history and documentation directly. A past listing or historical launch price does not prove current availability, authorized-dealer status or service arrangements.

What the available information does—and does not—establish

The specialist articles and retailer listing document the sun-compass concept and several distinctive versions, but they do not establish whether the Orienteering is currently in production, what every reference’s complete specification is, or where it can be bought or serviced through an authorized channel. Treat any asking price or availability claim as specific to a seller and date, and verify it before making a purchase decision.
