TAG Heuer Autavia Returns: A Hands-On Review of the 2019 Isograph

The 2019 Autavia Isograph was a three-hand collection, not a flyback chronograph. Here’s what the hands-on review says about its fit, legibility, specs and strap system.

TAG Heuer’s Autavia returned as a full collection in 2019, but the hands-on review covered here is specifically about the three-hand Autavia Isograph—not the later flyback chronographs. In his September 2019 review, Dan-Andrei of Watch I Love describes a 42 mm watch with strong legibility, a bidirectional bezel and a proprietary quick-change strap system. He found it comfortable despite usually preferring smaller watches; that is his wrist impression, not a universal fit verdict.

What does “Autavia returns” mean?

Autavia has more than one return date, depending on which chapter you mean. TAG Heuer traces the name to a dashboard timer introduced in 1933; it combines “Automobile” and “Aviation.” In 1962, Jack Heuer recreated Autavia as a wrist chronograph. TAG Heuer’s US collection page quotes him: “I relaunched Autavia in 1962 as a wristwatch.” TAG Heuer Autavia collection

The more recent return as a full collection came in 2019. TAG Heuer says that collection began with seven COSC-certified Calibre 5 models: five in steel and two in bronze. In 2022, the brand marked Autavia’s 60th anniversary with three new watches. Those anniversary models are a later milestone, not the subject of the 2019 Isograph review. What the 2019 hands-on review covers

Dan-Andrei’s Watch I Love review, published on 19 September 2019, examines the three-hand Autavia Isograph family in blue, black and grey dial versions. It does not review the later flyback chronographs. The reviewer describes a 42 mm stainless-steel case, relatively long but slightly curved lugs, a bidirectional bezel, raised anti-reflective sapphire crystal, large luminous numerals and hands, and a date display at six. He lists water resistance at 100 m. Watch I Love: Hands-on Review TAG Heuer Autavia Isograph Collection

Fit, legibility and dial choice

The reviewer says the watch felt comfortable on his wrist even though his usual preference is for 39–41 mm watches, and credits the curved lugs in part for the fit. He also reports very good legibility across the dial variants and singles out the blue dial as his personal favorite. These are observations from one reviewer, not a promise that the case will fit every wrist or that every wearer will prefer the same dial.

Strap and bracelet changes

The review describes a proprietary system for changing the strap or bracelet quickly. TAG Heuer’s collection page names calfskin leather, rubber NATO and stainless-steel bracelet options for its interchangeable system. Do not assume a third-party strap will fit: check compatibility against the exact reference before buying. TAG Heuer Autavia collection

2019 Isograph specifications

The figures below are for the 2019 three-hand Isograph as listed in the Watch I Love review. They should not be carried over to other Autavia generations or references.

Specification 2019 Autavia Isograph
Function Three-hand watch with date at six
Movement Automatic Calibre 5 Isograph with carbon-composite hairspring; COSC-certified
Power reserve 38 hours, as listed by Watch I Love in 2019
Case diameter 42 mm, as listed by Watch I Love in 2019
Water resistance 100 m, as listed by Watch I Love in 2019
Dial options covered Blue, black and grey

How the Isograph differs from later Autavias

“Autavia” now covers watches with different functions and specifications. A later example, reference CBE5150.FC8280, is a flyback chronograph—not the three-hand Isograph. TAG Heuer lists an in-house automatic Calibre HEUER02 COSC Flyback movement, an 80-hour reserve, a 42 mm diameter, 15.68 mm thickness, 21 mm lug distance and 100 m water resistance for that reference. The product page marks it discontinued; these figures describe that reference, not the 2019 Isograph. TAG Heuer Autavia collection

TAG Heuer’s account of the 2022 anniversary watches mentions chronograph pushers, an oversized crown, a bidirectional 60-minute bezel and a sapphire caseback as design features. Those details identify that anniversary release; they do not make the reviewed Isograph a chronograph. TAG Heuer Magazine: Autavia 60th anniversary

What to check when considering an Autavia

Because the collection spans different generations and functions, compare exact references rather than relying on the Autavia name alone. Verify the following against the specific watch and its current product listing:

Rank #4
  • Reference and generation: identify whether it is the 2019 Isograph, a flyback chronograph or another release.
  • Function and movement: check whether it is a three-hand watch or chronograph, and confirm the movement and reserve for that reference.
  • Case and bezel: compare diameter, thickness, material and bezel type; the 42 mm diameter alone does not capture how a watch wears.
  • Dial and lume: inspect the exact color and display rather than assuming every variant is identical.
  • Strap or bracelet: confirm what is included and whether the intended replacement is compatible with the reference.
  • Availability: check current status and price with the seller or TAG Heuer. The discontinued CBE5150.FC8280 page does not establish present stock or pricing elsewhere.

Verdict on the 2019 Autavia Isograph

The 2019 return brought Autavia back as a varied collection, while the Isograph reviewed here chose a three-hand format rather than the chronograph identity some enthusiasts associate with the name. The hands-on account points to legible dials, a substantial 42 mm case and a quick-change system; its favorable fit assessment belongs to the reviewer’s wrist and preferences. The most important distinction for anyone comparing Autavias is to separate this Isograph from the later flyback models and check specifications by reference.
