What is the TAG Heuer MikrotourbillonS?
TAG Heuer presents the Mikrotourbillons as a dual-chain, double-barrel timepiece with two distinct tourbillons, “one for the watch and one for the chronograph,” as stated on the brand’s tourbillon complications page. The separation is central to the design: the watch’s timekeeping and the chronograph’s elapsed-time measurement each have a tourbillon rather than sharing one.

TAG Heuer’s 2024 tourbillon article dates the Mikrotourbillons concept to 2012 and describes it as a high-horology concept watch. The brand calls it a “dual tourbillon design”; its official complications page uses the singular name “MikrotourbillonS.”
How the two tourbillons and chronograph work
The timekeeping tourbillon
A tourbillon places regulating components inside a rotating cage. TAG Heuer explains that the mechanism was developed to counter the effects of gravity on a watch’s regulator, a concern historically associated with pocket watches that spent much of their time in one position. In a wristwatch, movement during wear makes that original positional problem less central. TAG Heuer notes that tourbillons have limited practical purpose in modern wristwatches, while their visible motion remains a demonstration of watchmaking skill. The chronograph tourbillon
The second tourbillon is dedicated to the chronograph. TAG Heuer describes this mechanism as high-frequency: it runs at 50 Hz and completes one rotation every five seconds. The brand connects that speed with chronograph accuracy to 1/100 second. TAG Heuer also describes the chronograph as startable and stoppable. These are the manufacturer’s claims; the cited sources do not report an independent test of the watch’s accuracy.
The distinction matters because the five-second rotation is not simply a faster version of the watch’s ordinary timekeeping tourbillon. It belongs to the chronograph system, whose job is to measure elapsed intervals. TAG Heuer’s dual-chain and double-barrel description further distinguishes the construction, though the available sources do not detail how energy is allocated between the mechanisms.

What Christie’s documents about one example
Christie’s records a Carrera Mikrotourbillons example as circa 2012, movement number 360’510. Its lot-specific description gives the following details:
- 45 mm case in 18k pink gold and tantalum
- Semi-skeletonized anthracite dial and glazed display back
- Automatic, dual-barrel movement with 75 jewels
- Watch tourbillon at 10 o’clock and chronograph tourbillon at 7 o’clock
- Listed accessories: titanium TAG Heuer deployant clasp, undated International Guarantee, COSC card, instruction manual, loupe, presentation box and outer packaging
These are specifications and accompanying items for the particular watch described in Christie’s lot record; they should not be treated as a complete specification sheet for every Mikrotourbillons example. The auction essay repeats TAG Heuer’s 1/100-second accuracy claim and says the tourbillon can be started and stopped, attributing those characteristics to the brand rather than reporting independent testing.
