Fitness trackers have split into three distinct types: slim bands that quietly log steps and sleep, full smartwatches with apps and notifications, and screenless rings or sensors built around recovery data. The right choice depends less on the longest feature list than on your phone, whether you need independent GPS, how often you are willing to charge, and whether you will pay for a subscription.
We compared the leading models for accuracy, battery life, comfort, software, training tools and value. Battery figures below separate manufacturer claims from practical use where that distinction matters. Prices are approximate US list or typical retail prices and can change with sales.

Our picks
1. Fitbit Charge 6 — best fitness tracker for most people
Why we recommend it: The Charge 6 is the best compromise between a fitness band and a smartwatch. It is small enough to wear overnight, but its color AMOLED screen is useful during a workout. Built-in GPS means you can leave your phone behind for a run, and it supports more than 40 exercise modes.

It also includes ECG readings, EDA stress measurements, heart-rate tracking, sleep tools and familiar Fitbit activity summaries. Google Maps, Google Wallet and YouTube Music controls make it more capable than a basic band without turning it into a full-size smartwatch.
- Compatibility: Android 9 or later and iOS 15 or later; a Google Account is required.
- Durability: 5ATM water resistance.
- Battery: Fitbit quotes up to seven days, though GPS use and frequent screen activity reduce that figure.
- Subscription: Fitbit Premium is required for some deeper insights and programs, but basic tracking works without it.
- Main limitation: The small screen and phone-dependent smart features cannot replace a smartwatch.
Choose the Charge 6 if you want route recording, reliable everyday health tracking and a low-profile design without committing to a daily-charging watch.
2. Apple Watch Series 11 — best for iPhone users
The Series 11 is the most complete option here for iPhone owners. It combines fitness tracking with notifications, calls, apps, Apple Pay, safety features and a large ecosystem of training software. It has onboard GPS and is available with cellular connectivity; cellular versions support 5G.
Apple rates it for up to 24 hours of normal use. Our reviewed testing produced a longer 43-hour result under different conditions, but those figures should not be treated as equivalent: always-on display settings, cellular use, GPS and workout frequency have a large effect on endurance.
- Compatibility: iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. It does not work with Android phones.
- Water rating: Suitable for swimming, but water resistance does not guarantee that every swimming metric is recorded.
- Subscription: Apple Fitness+ is optional; many core Watch and Health functions do not require it.
- Main limitation: Battery life is short beside a Garmin or Fitbit band, and the watch is a poor choice if you want to charge only once a week.
3. Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 — best Android-compatible smartwatch
The Galaxy Watch 8 is the closest Android equivalent to the Apple Watch experience. It has a bright display, built-in GPS, notifications, apps, contactless payments and a broad set of health and workout features. Its 5ATM and IP68 protection make it suitable for everyday wear and many water-based activities.
Samsung quotes up to 30 hours with the always-on display enabled, although GPS, LTE and health measurements can shorten that considerably. It works with Android phones, but some health functions and the smoothest setup are reserved for Samsung Galaxy phones.
- Compatibility: Android phones; Samsung specifies Galaxy smartphones running Android 12 or later for its current product setup.
- Subscription: Most standard tracking features are included, while some advanced services may depend on Samsung’s software and account requirements.
- Main limitation: It is not platform-neutral. iPhone owners should buy an Apple Watch instead.
4. Fitbit Inspire 3 — best inexpensive Fitbit
The Inspire 3 is the sensible budget pick for basic activity, sleep and wellness tracking. Its AMOLED display is clear, the band is comfortable at night, and the small body disappears under a sleeve. It records overnight blood oxygen estimates and supports a useful range of automatic activity recognition.
There is no onboard GPS. For route, pace and distance data, the Inspire 3 must use your phone’s GPS, so it is not the right choice for phone-free outdoor workouts.
Rank #2
- Designed with a bright AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode

- Compatibility: Android and iPhone, with a Google Account.
- Battery: Fitbit quotes up to 10 days; testing produced roughly eight days with normal use.
- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Subscription: Some sleep and readiness insights are behind Fitbit Premium.
- Main limitation: Connected GPS and subscription-gated analysis.
5. Garmin Lily 2 — best stylish tracker for small wrists
The Lily 2 looks more like a piece of jewelry than a sports computer. Its patterned display and slim case are particularly appealing if conventional black fitness watches feel too bulky. It tracks steps, heart rate, sleep, stress and workouts while supporting both Android and iPhone.
The compromises are important. It has no onboard GPS, no barometric altimeter and cannot broadcast heart rate to compatible gym equipment. You must carry your phone for accurate outdoor route tracking.
- Battery: About five days in testing.
- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Subscription: Garmin Connect’s core service is free; optional Connect+ features may be offered separately.
- Main limitation: It is a wellness tracker with a fashionable case, not a serious navigation or training watch.
6. Garmin Venu Sq 2 — best practical Garmin smartwatch
The Venu Sq 2 is a good choice when you want Garmin’s training and health platform in a rectangular, smartwatch-style case. Its AMOLED display is easier to read than many traditional Garmin screens, and built-in GPS handles outdoor walks, runs and rides without a phone. Garmin Pay and a long-lasting battery add everyday convenience.
Testing delivered roughly eight days, although Garmin’s claimed figure depends on the exact version and settings. It does not track floors climbed and lacks Garmin’s animated workout graphics, so it is less complete than higher-end models.

- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Subscription: Core Garmin Connect features are included; optional Connect+ services are not necessary for ordinary activity and workout tracking.
- Main limitation: No barometric altimeter, floors-climbed data or animated on-watch workouts.
7. Oura Ring 4 — best finger-based tracker
Oura Ring 4 is the least intrusive way to collect sleep and recovery data. It measures activity, heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, stress and cycle-related trends. Because it has no screen, it is comfortable in meetings and overnight, and it avoids the “I am wearing a computer” look of a smartwatch.
It is less useful as a live sports device. Workout detail is not as comprehensive as on a running watch, and the ring’s most valuable insights require an ongoing Oura membership.
- Compatibility: Android and iPhone.
- GPS: No onboard GPS; outdoor route recording relies on a phone.
- Battery: Up to about eight days, depending on size and use.
- Water resistance: Suitable for everyday water exposure and swimming within the manufacturer’s limits.
- Main limitation: The purchase price is followed by a subscription, and serious athletes will want a separate sports watch.
8. Samsung Galaxy Fit3 — best entry-level Android band
The Galaxy Fit3 gives Android users a large, bright band-style screen and a broad list of workout shortcuts at a very low price. The article’s testing covered roughly 7.5 days of use, while Samsung’s stated endurance can be longer under lighter conditions.
It has no built-in GPS, so outdoor routes require a phone. It is also more attractive to Samsung owners: certain functions work best, or only work, when paired with a Samsung Galaxy phone.

- Find new ways to keep your body moving with more than 80 built-in indoor and GPS sports apps, including walking, running, cycling, HIIT, mobility, swimming, golf and more
- Compatibility: Android only; Samsung phones provide the fullest experience.
- Water resistance: 5ATM and IP68 protection.
- Subscription: No general Fitbit- or Oura-style membership is required for its basic functions.
- Main limitation: No independent GPS and limited iPhone support.
9. Apple Watch SE 3 — best budget Apple Watch
The Apple Watch SE 3 is the value choice for iPhone users who want Apple’s notifications, safety tools, exercise tracking and app support without paying Series 11 money. It uses the same processor as the Series 11 in the reviewed comparison, so everyday responsiveness is not the main sacrifice.
The missing health hardware is more significant. It does not include blood oxygen or ECG capabilities and lacks the water-depth and water-temperature sensors found on more expensive Apple Watch models.
- Compatibility: iPhone only.
- Price: Apple lists a US starting price of $249.
- Battery: Expect daily charging rather than multi-day band endurance.
- Subscription: Apple Fitness+ is optional.
- Main limitation: Fewer advanced sensors and shorter endurance than many dedicated fitness trackers.
10. Garmin vívoactive 5 — best Garmin for music and wellness
The vívoactive 5 is a balanced fitness smartwatch with onboard GPS, music storage, Body Battery energy tracking, sleep tools and nap detection. You can pair headphones and leave your phone behind for music during a workout, something many slim trackers cannot do.
Its battery can last up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, although GPS and music use reduce that substantially. As with the Venu Sq 2, it lacks a barometric altimeter and animated workout graphics.
- Compatibility: Android and iPhone.
- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Subscription: Core Garmin Connect features are free; optional Connect+ features are separate.
- Main limitation: It is better for general fitness and wellness than advanced elevation-based training.
11. Polar Pacer Pro — best running tracker
The Pacer Pro is the most training-focused option in this group. It provides built-in GPS, wrist-based running power, ascent and descent data, recovery measurements, sleep tracking, Hill Splitter and Komoot route guidance. Its buttons are practical during hard efforts when a touchscreen is awkward or unresponsive.
It works with Android, iPhone and Polar’s web platform, and battery life is roughly a week in normal watch use. The interface is less smartwatch-like than Apple, Samsung or Google’s, but that is part of its appeal for runners who want training data rather than apps.
- Water resistance: Suitable for swimming and everyday water exposure within Polar’s rating.
- Subscription: Polar Flow provides the main training ecosystem without requiring the same type of ongoing membership as Oura.
- Main limitation: Fewer smartwatch conveniences and less broad appeal for casual users.
12. Fitbit Ace 3 — best tracker for children
The Ace 3 is designed for children aged roughly 6–12. It focuses on steps, movement and sleep, with a simple interface and activity challenges rather than adult health metrics. It has no heart-rate monitoring, GPS or location tracking, which is worth understanding before purchase.
Setup is managed through a Google family group and a child account. That makes it more controlled than handing a child an adult smartwatch, but it also means parents must complete the account setup rather than treating it as a standalone gift.

- Compatibility: Requires the Fitbit family setup and a supported parent account.
- Battery: Up to about eight days.
- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Main limitation: It cannot provide location tracking or emergency communication.
13. Google Pixel Watch 4 — best Google smartwatch
The Pixel Watch 4 is the natural alternative to the Galaxy Watch 8 for Android users who prefer Google’s software, Pixel design and Fitbit health platform. It offers built-in GPS, a full smartwatch interface and the convenience of Google services in a compact case.
It is more useful than a band for calls, apps and notifications, but it has the same basic smartwatch trade-off: battery life is measured in roughly a day rather than a week. Fitbit’s deeper analysis may also require Premium.
- Compatibility: Android only; it is not an iPhone accessory.
- GPS: Built-in.
- Water resistance: Check the exact model’s rating before swimming or extended water exposure.
- Subscription: Fitbit Premium is optional for basic tracking but unlocks additional insights.
- Main limitation: Shorter endurance than a fitness band or Garmin watch.
14. Garmin vívoactive 6 — best long-battery everyday fitness watch
The vívoactive 6 is the newer Garmin option to consider if you want a modern everyday watch with GPS, wellness metrics, workout guidance and long battery life. It occupies the middle ground between a basic tracker and a specialist running watch: more training-capable than a band, but less expensive and complicated than Garmin’s premium outdoor range.
Its strongest reason to buy is endurance. Garmin quotes roughly 11 days in smartwatch use, with GPS and music reducing that figure. It is compatible with both major phone platforms and avoids the iPhone-only or Android-only lock-in of Apple and Google’s watches.
- Compatibility: Android and iPhone.
- GPS: Built-in.
- Water resistance: 5ATM.
- Subscription: Basic Garmin Connect tracking does not require a membership; optional Connect+ features may cost extra.
- Main limitation: It is not as app-rich as an Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch and is not a replacement for a dedicated high-end running or outdoor watch.
How to choose a fitness tracker
Start with your phone
This is the first filter, not a minor specification. Apple Watch requires a compatible iPhone. Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Fit3 are Android products, with Samsung phones getting the most complete feature set. Garmin, Fitbit and Oura generally work across Android and iPhone, though individual functions and minimum operating-system versions still matter.
Decide whether you need built-in GPS
Built-in GPS records your route, pace and distance without your phone. Connected GPS uses the phone you carry and is common on cheaper bands such as the Inspire 3, Lily 2 and Galaxy Fit3. If you regularly run, hike or cycle without a phone, remove connected-GPS models from your shortlist.
Treat battery claims as ceilings
“Up to” figures normally assume limited GPS, modest screen use and particular settings. An Apple Watch may need daily charging; a Garmin can last more than a week; a GPS workout, always-on display, LTE connection or music playback can narrow that gap. Think about your actual charging habit, especially if sleep tracking matters.
Do not confuse water resistance with swimming features
A 5ATM rating describes water resistance, not the quality or presence of swim tracking. Check whether the device records pool lengths, stroke type, pace and rests if swimming is a core activity. A water-resistant tracker can still have limited swimming software.

Understand wrist-heart-rate limitations
Wrist devices use optical sensors and can lose accuracy when the band is loose, the wrist is moving sharply, or the skin is cold. Chest straps generally measure electrical activity closer to the heart and remain the better choice for demanding interval training or highly precise heart-rate work. An ECG feature is also not the same as continuous medical monitoring.
Budget for subscriptions
Fitbit Premium, Oura membership and some newer platform add-ons place advanced insights behind recurring payments. Garmin’s core Connect service remains usable without a subscription, although Garmin also offers optional Connect+ features. Before buying, identify which information you actually care about and whether it is included in the purchase price.
How we tested
We assessed comfort during all-day and overnight wear, screen readability, setup, companion apps, notification handling, workout recording and battery behavior. Outdoor tests included walks, runs and cycling, with particular attention to GPS lock, route consistency and how quickly a device lost charge during recording.
We also compared the software rather than judging sensors in isolation. A tracker that collects many measurements but hides them behind a confusing app is less useful than one with fewer metrics and clear trends. Fitness trackers are not medical diagnostic devices, and readings should be treated as wellness information unless a qualified clinician tells you otherwise.

FAQ
Which fitness tracker is best for most people?
The Fitbit Charge 6 is the strongest all-round fitness tracker for most people because it is comfortable, relatively affordable, supports Android and iPhone, includes built-in GPS and offers useful health and workout features. Fitbit Premium is needed for some advanced insights.
What is the best fitness tracker for an iPhone?
The Apple Watch Series 11 is the best full-featured choice, while the Apple Watch SE 3 is the better budget option. Apple Watch is iPhone-only, so Android users should consider Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung or Google alternatives.
Do fitness trackers need a phone for GPS?
Only models with connected GPS do. The Fitbit Inspire 3, Garmin Lily 2 and Samsung Galaxy Fit3 require a phone for route tracking. The Charge 6, Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Garmin watches and Polar Pacer Pro have built-in GPS and can record routes independently.
Is a fitness tracker accurate enough for medical decisions?
Fitness trackers are designed for wellness and exercise guidance, not diagnosis. Wrist heart-rate readings can be affected by fit and movement, and blood oxygen, sleep and stress estimates have limitations. Use a clinician or validated medical device for symptoms or medical decisions.
The Bottom Line
For a straightforward band with independent GPS, buy the Fitbit Charge 6. iPhone owners wanting apps and safety features should choose the Apple Watch Series 11, or the Apple Watch SE 3 to spend less. Android smartwatch buyers should compare the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Google Pixel Watch 4. For long battery life, Garmin remains the safer choice; for sleep and recovery in the smallest form, choose the Oura Ring 4—but only if its membership cost is acceptable.
