Arken’s first watch, the Instrumentum 1020, brought together a compact 40 mm titanium case, 300 m water resistance and an integrated titanium bracelet when it launched in 2021. Its tough, tool-watch proposition remains distinctive, but “future-proof” is an editorial idea, not a guarantee—and the brand now lists the watch as discontinued and sold out.
Arken’s debut: the Instrumentum 1020
The Instrumentum was Arken Watch Company’s first model. Founder Kenneth Lam says crowdfunded preorders opened on 15 September 2021 at $500. Lam’s account of the launch describes a year spent building the website, creating product photography and video, and preparing the launch.
Arken’s product listing identifies the watch as reference 1020 and numbers the edition from 001 to 300. The same listing now marks it “discontinued,” “out of stock” and “sold out.” Its displayed £429.99 price is a listing figure, not a current offer or an indication of secondhand value. The sources reviewed do not establish current resale availability or pricing. Arken’s Instrumentum listing is the source for the model’s specifications and status.
What made the design proposition distinctive?
The defining choice was to combine dive-watch cues with a fully integrated titanium bracelet. Contemporary coverage described a monochrome dial, broad serrated rotating bezel, screw-down crown, luminous hands and markers, and a bracelet that tapers from the case. The bracelet’s visual continuity gives the watch a more unified, modern silhouette than a conventional case with separate lugs and a strap.

- Titanium-Tone Design: Blue dial pairs with a 40mm titanium-color case and an adjustable green strap fitting up to an 8-inch wrist
- Adjustable Fabric Strap: An adjustable fabric band fits comfortably up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for a secure, personalized feel
- Indiglo Backlight: A push of the button illuminates the dial and luminous hands in the dark, day or night, rain or shine
- All-Weather Durability: A mineral glass crystal and water resistance to 50 meters keep this field watch ready for daily wear
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
That design also makes fit worth considering: the manufacturer lists a 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement alongside the 40 mm case diameter. The proportions may look compact on paper, but the integrated bracelet and its shape are part of how the watch wears; diameter alone does not settle whether it will suit a given wrist.
Time+Tide’s launch-era account was made in partnership with Arken, with the publication saying its opinions were its own. Fratello’s Dave Sergeant described seeing two iterative prototypes in person in August 2021. Their aesthetic and hands-on observations are period reviewer impressions, not independent certification or a guarantee of how every example performs. Time+Tide’s 2021 coverage and Fratello’s hands-on article provide those contemporary descriptions.

How to read the titanium and 300 m claims
Arken presents the case as titanium with an anti-scratch treatment. Worn & Wound’s 2021 launch report specifies grade 2 titanium treated to 600 Vickers. Those are brand and publication claims; they should not be mistaken for a report of independent laboratory testing. Titanium is central to the model’s identity, but a hardness-treatment figure alone does not establish how a particular watch will age or resist damage in everyday use.

The 300 m / 1,000 ft water-resistance rating is also a manufacturer specification, not permission to dive without training. Arken’s manual explicitly warns: “FOR YOUR SAFETY, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DIVE OR PARTICIPATE IN EXTREME SPORTS USING THIS WATCH UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN PROPERLY TRAINED IN FORE-MENTIONED ACTIVITIES.” The Instrumentum user manual supplies that safety warning. Follow appropriate training and safety practices rather than treating the rating as a substitute.
What “future-proof” can—and cannot—mean here
The case for calling the Instrumentum a forward-looking debut rests on its design choices: titanium construction, an integrated bracelet, a familiar Miyota automatic movement and a substantial stated water-resistance rating. Those features describe the watch Arken launched; they do not prove future serviceability, parts availability or long-term durability. The sources do not establish those outcomes.

One later product-family detail is documented: Hodinkee reported in 2023 that Arken’s Alterum was compatible with the Instrumentum titanium bracelet. That is a specific compatibility statement between Arken models, not evidence that the bracelet is currently in stock or fits watches from other brands. Hodinkee’s Alterum introduction reported the compatibility and noted that the Instrumentum had quickly sold out.

As a design proposition, the Instrumentum is an unusually coherent first watch: compact listed dimensions, a titanium case and bracelet, dive-style detailing, and a Miyota 9015 automatic movement. Its original $500 preorder price and Fratello’s £429.99 launch-era figure help explain its initial positioning, but neither tells a prospective buyer what an example should cost now.

Because Arken lists the model as discontinued and sold out, a new purchase from the brand is not established. The reviewed sources do not confirm present secondhand listings, condition, service history, or market value. Anyone considering a pre-owned example would need to verify the individual watch, its operation and water-resistance condition, and the seller’s documentation rather than relying on the model’s original specifications alone.
