A watch’s caseback can reveal as much character as its dial. Monochrome Watches’ December 14, 2025 feature, “The Best on the Back, Six Watches with Drop-Dead Gorgeous Movements,” chose six mechanical watches for the architecture and finishing visible from behind. They are not direct substitutes: the selection ranges from a fusée-and-chain watch to a split-seconds chronograph and a flying tourbillon. Here is what makes each movement distinctive, with prices identified as the feature’s dated reports rather than current quotes.
Six movements, six different reasons to turn the watch over
Movement beauty is not one finish or complication. A transparent or partially open caseback can show how bridges divide the mechanism, how a complication is arranged, and how surfaces catch the light. These six watches make different choices: symmetrical layouts, polished bevels, an openworked bridge, paired balance wheels, or a tourbillon.
The descriptions and the prices below are from Monochrome Watches’ feature published December 14, 2025, unless an official brand source is identified. The feature’s prices are historical reporting, not confirmation of current prices or availability. Breguet’s current product page directs interested customers to a point of sale for pricing.
Ferdinand Berthoud Naissance d’Une Montre 3
The Naissance d’Une Montre 3 is built around a traditional fusée-and-chain mechanism. Its appeal from the back is the orderliness of the layout: a symmetrical composition, carefully finished surfaces, engraving, and partial windows that reveal the reverse of the fusée-and-chain system. The feature also points to the balance-staff shock absorber, a small technical detail that rewards close viewing.

Ferdinand Berthoud’s official project page describes an 11-watch series made with traditional methods and without digital assistance, and says the watch is COSC-certified. That official total differs from the feature’s statement that only 10 would be made, so 11 is the supported edition count. Monochrome reported a price of CHF 850,000 in December 2025; treat it as a dated report, not a current offer. Ferdinand Berthoud’s project page.
Breguet Classique Souscription 2025
The single-hand white Grand Feu enamel dial is deliberately restrained; the caseback offers a different kind of visual detail. Stepped bridges, blued screws, polished bevels, and contrasting textures give the manual-winding movement depth. Breguet’s launch page describes the sapphire back as revealing the VS00 calibre in gilded brass matched to the shade of Breguet gold.
Breguet’s current product specifications list 144 components, a 96-hour power reserve, and a frequency of 3 Hz. The watch has a 40 mm 18K Breguet-gold case and a sapphire caseback. Monochrome reported EUR 52,800 in December 2025; Breguet’s current page asks customers to contact a point of sale for the recommended retail price, so the earlier figure should not be read as a current quote. Lang & Heyne Anton Manufacture Edition
The Anton Manufacture Edition centers its movement view on a flying tourbillon and finger bridges. Its exterior sets up a contrast: an Art Deco-influenced case surrounds a black zirconium oxide ceramic dial, while the caseback reveals the mechanical architecture.
The December 2025 feature reported five pieces and EUR 160,000 excluding VAT. Those figures describe the feature’s report at publication, not a current offer.
How to compare the six
These watches are best compared by what their backs reveal, rather than treated as a like-for-like shortlist. One emphasizes a traditional energy-transmission system; another foregrounds a split-seconds chronograph; others make paired balances, openworked bridges, or a tourbillon the visual center.
