The Best Smartwatches of 2021: Apple, Samsung, Garmin and Fitbit Compared

The Apple Watch Series 7 led for iPhone users in 2021, while the Galaxy Watch 4, Garmin Venu 2, Fitbit Sense and Forerunner 55 served different Android, fitness, health and running needs.

This is a 2021-era ranking. The Apple Watch Series 7 was the best overall smartwatch for iPhone owners, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 was the strongest Android option, and the Garmin Venu 2 was the better choice for long battery life and fitness. The Fitbit Sense and Garmin Forerunner 55 were compelling alternatives for health-focused users and runners.

That verdict describes the best products available in 2021—not necessarily the best purchase in 2026. Used or refurbished buyers should separately check battery condition, software support, charger availability, LTE compatibility, regional health features and the price of newer successors.

Quick comparison

Watch Best for Phone compatibility Battery claim GPS Health features LTE Main drawback
Apple Watch Series 7 Best overall for iPhone iPhone only Up to 18 hours Yes ECG, blood oxygen, heart-rate and workout tracking Optional Daily charging and no Android support
Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Best Android smartwatch Android; no iPhone Up to 40 hours Yes ECG, blood oxygen and body-composition estimates Optional Some health features require a Samsung Galaxy phone
Garmin Venu 2 Fitness and battery life Android and iPhone Up to 11 days Yes Workout, recovery, heart-rate and sleep tracking No Smaller app and messaging ecosystem
Fitbit Sense Health and wellness Android and iPhone More than six days Yes ECG, stress, sleep and blood-oxygen features No Fewer smartwatch apps and possible service restrictions
Garmin Forerunner 55 Affordable running Android and iPhone Not the primary selling point Yes Running and training features No Basic smartwatch functionality

Battery figures are manufacturer “up to” claims measured in different modes, so they are not directly comparable. GPS, LTE, music playback, an always-on display, sleep tracking and frequent notifications can reduce endurance on every model.

How the ranking was decided

A smartwatch is more than a list of sensors. The most useful comparison weighs:

SAMSUNG Galaxy FIT 3 [2025, 40MM] 1.6" AMOLED Display | IP68 Water Resistant | 14 Days Battery Life | 100+ Watchfaces | 100+ Exercise Modes | International Model (Fast Charger Bundle, Black)
  • Vibrant 1.6” AMOLED Display – Large, high-res screen with smooth touch for easy navigation
  • 5ATM & IP68 Water Resistance – Swim-ready and dust-resistant for active lifestyles
  • Up to 14 Days Battery Life – Powerful 208mAh battery for long-lasting performance
  • 101+ Workout Modes with Auto Detection – Automatically tracks common workouts for seamless fitness tracking. Advanced Health Tracking – Includes sleep coaching, SpO2, heart rate, and snore detection
  • International Model No Warranty in the US. ONLY compatible with Android devices. Samsung Pay - Not Supported. NOT compatible with iPhone or iOS devices.
  • Compatibility and ecosystem fit: a watch that cannot work with your phone is not a viable recommendation.
  • Core smartwatch experience: notifications, apps, calls, messages, payments, music, maps and voice assistance.
  • Health and fitness: GPS, workouts, heart-rate tracking, sleep, recovery and safety tools.
  • Battery and charging: not just the quoted runtime, but whether the watch can cover sleep, workouts and a full day without inconvenient charging.
  • Hardware: display, case sizes, controls, comfort, durability and water resistance.
  • Value: launch price, LTE premiums, subscriptions and feature omissions.

The result is not a universal numerical score. A Garmin can be the better fitness tool while being less capable for apps and messaging than an Apple Watch or Wear OS watch.

1. Apple Watch Series 7: best overall for iPhone owners

The Apple Watch Series 7 was the most complete smartwatch of 2021 within the iPhone ecosystem. It combined mature notifications and communications with a broad app ecosystem, Apple Pay, music, safety features, workout tracking, GPS and health tools.

Its most noticeable upgrade was the display. Apple claimed nearly 20% more screen area than the Series 6, with borders reduced to about 1.7 mm. The larger screen made text, complications and on-watch controls easier to read and use, while stronger crack-resistance and durability claims improved its appeal for everyday wear. Those durability improvements are Apple’s claims, not a substitute for independent damage testing.

Charging also improved: Apple claimed 33% faster charging than the previous generation. That matters because the advertised battery life remained up to 18 hours, effectively a one-day watch. Faster charging can make it easier to top up before sleep or a workout, but it does not eliminate the charging trade-off.

What it did well

  • The strongest overall combination of apps, notifications, calls, messages, payments and safety functions.
  • Excellent integration with iPhone and other Apple services.
  • ECG and blood-oxygen capabilities, alongside broad workout and health tracking.
  • GPS and optional cellular connectivity for users who want some independence from their phone.
  • A larger, more usable display than earlier Apple Watch models.

What it did not solve

  • It required an iPhone and could not be paired with an Android phone.
  • Its battery was much shorter-lived than Garmin’s or Fitbit’s.
  • The core health hardware was close to the Series 6; the Series 7 was primarily a display, charging and durability upgrade.
  • LTE required a compatible carrier plan and added to the cost.

Buy it if: you used an iPhone and wanted the richest all-purpose smartwatch experience. Skip it if: you used Android or strongly disliked daily charging. A runner who prioritised endurance could reasonably choose Garmin instead.

2. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: best Android smartwatch

The Galaxy Watch 4 was important because Samsung moved its main smartwatch line from Tizen to Wear OS Powered by Samsung, paired with One UI Watch 3. That brought Samsung’s hardware closer to Google’s smartwatch ecosystem and made the watch a more credible Android alternative to Apple Watch.

The standard Galaxy Watch 4 came in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes. The Watch 4 Classic came in 42 mm and 46 mm versions and added a physical rotating bezel for a more traditional watch design. Both offered bright AMOLED displays, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, optional LTE, 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage.

Samsung’s BioActive Sensor combined optical heart-rate, electrical heart and bioelectrical-impedance-analysis sensors. That enabled features including ECG, blood-oxygen tracking and body-composition estimates. These measurements should be treated as consumer wellness tools and estimates—not diagnoses or replacements for medical care.

The compatibility catch

Galaxy Watch 4 was not compatible with iPhones. Samsung stated that compatible Android phones needed Android 6.0 or later and at least 1.5 GB of RAM. More importantly, some Samsung Health Monitor functions, including ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, had Samsung Galaxy phone restrictions. Availability also varied by market and regulatory approval. Check Samsung’s compatibility guidance for the specific phone and country before buying.

Samsung claimed up to 40 hours of battery life. That was better than Apple’s quoted figure, but still generally meant charging every day or two, especially with workouts, LTE, an always-on display or sleep tracking.

2021 pricing

Samsung’s US launch MSRP began at $249.99 for the 40 mm Bluetooth model and $299.99 for the 40 mm LTE model. The 44 mm versions began at $279.99 for Bluetooth and $329.99 for LTE. The Classic models started at $349.99 for the 42 mm Bluetooth version and rose to $429.99 for the 46 mm LTE version, according to Samsung’s September 2021 MSRP sheet.

Buy it if: you used Android—especially a Samsung Galaxy phone—and wanted apps, notifications, Google integration, health features and a bright traditional smartwatch display. Be cautious if: you used a non-Samsung Android phone or live somewhere the advertised health functions are unavailable.

3. Garmin Venu 2: best for fitness and battery life

The Garmin Venu 2 was the best choice for readers who valued training, GPS and endurance more than a large third-party app ecosystem.

Garmin claimed up to 11 days in smartwatch mode for the Venu 2 and up to 10 days for the smaller Venu 2S. In GPS-plus-music mode, the claims fell to up to eight hours and seven hours respectively. Those mode distinctions are essential: a watch that lasts many days for notifications may last only part of a long GPS workout with music.

The Venu 2 worked with both Android and iPhone. It offered built-in music, Garmin Pay, phone notifications, GPS and a broad exercise library. Garmin cited more than 1,400 exercises for customizable workouts. Its strength was the accumulated fitness experience: repeatable workout tracking, recovery context and less frequent charging.

The trade-off

Garmin’s platform was less capable than Apple’s or Wear OS for rich messaging, calls, voice assistants and third-party apps. The Venu 2 was also more fitness-oriented than Garmin’s specialist Forerunner and Fenix lines, so serious athletes could need a more training-focused model.

Buy it if: you ran, cycled, trained at the gym, hiked or simply wanted multi-day battery life with Android/iPhone compatibility. Choose Apple or Samsung instead if: your priority was apps, payments, calls, messaging or a more phone-like smartwatch experience.

4. Fitbit Sense: best health-focused alternative

The Fitbit Sense was aimed more at wellness and health trends than at replacing a phone on the wrist. It included built-in GPS, ECG capability, blood-oxygen tracking, stress-oriented tools and Fitbit’s companion app for viewing longer-term patterns in sleep, activity and wellbeing.

Fitbit claimed more than six days of battery life, although an always-on display and intensive tracking reduced that figure. That made it a better sleep-tracking companion than a one-day Apple Watch for users who did not need constant smartwatch interaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compromise was the smart platform. Fitbit had fewer apps and less capable communications than Apple Watch or Wear OS. Advanced services could also depend on a Fitbit account, subscription, country or feature availability. ECG availability had country and age restrictions, and the presence of a sensor did not guarantee clinical-grade accuracy.

Buy it if: stress, sleep, health trends and multi-day battery life mattered more than calls, navigation and a large app catalogue. Choose Garmin instead if: training tools and workout depth were the priority.

5. Garmin Forerunner 55: best affordable running watch

The Garmin Forerunner 55 was a running watch first and a smartwatch second. That distinction explains both its appeal and its limitations.

It focused on GPS-based running, training guidance and straightforward fitness data rather than premium materials, extensive apps, calls or a phone-like interface. A December 2021/January 2022 Consumers’ Association of Ireland test placed the Forerunner 55 first among the listed models, with an overall score of 86. That result is useful context for its running value, but it should not be interpreted as proof that it was the best general-purpose smartwatch.

Best alternatives in 2021

Apple Watch SE: the lower-cost iPhone option

The Apple Watch SE offered the Apple Watch software experience, notifications, workouts and safety functions at a lower position in the range. It omitted some premium health hardware, including ECG and blood-oxygen sensing. For an iPhone owner who mainly wanted notifications, exercise tracking and Apple integration, the SE could offer better value than the Series 7. The Series 7 made more sense if its larger display, faster charging and additional health features justified the extra cost.

Galaxy Watch 4 Classic: the traditional-watch alternative

The Classic was not a separate platform, but its rotating bezel and larger, more conventional styling made it the better fit for readers who disliked minimalist touchscreen designs. It cost more than the standard Galaxy Watch 4 and retained the same Android-only ecosystem and Samsung-phone health restrictions.

Higher-end Garmin watches

Serious runners, cyclists and outdoor athletes could reasonably move beyond the Venu 2 or Forerunner 55 to Garmin’s more specialised Forerunner or Fenix ranges. The benefit was deeper training and outdoor functionality; the cost was typically a less lifestyle-focused smartwatch experience.

Fitbit Versa 3

The Versa 3 was the less expensive Fitbit-style route for users who wanted Fitbit’s wellness platform, battery life and built-in GPS without choosing the Sense’s full health-sensor package.

Which 2021 smartwatch should you choose?

  1. You use an iPhone and want the best all-round watch: choose the Apple Watch Series 7.
  2. You use Android and want the strongest conventional smartwatch: choose the Galaxy Watch 4; Samsung Galaxy owners generally had the fullest access to its health functions.
  3. You want the longest battery life: choose the Garmin Venu 2, while remembering that GPS-plus-music endurance is much shorter than smartwatch-mode endurance.
  4. You run on a budget: choose the Garmin Forerunner 55. If your training is more advanced, consider a specialist Forerunner instead.
  5. You care most about stress, sleep and health trends: choose the Fitbit Sense, subject to country, age, account and subscription limitations.
  6. You want the least expensive route into Apple’s ecosystem: consider the Apple Watch SE, provided you can live without the Series 7’s additional health hardware and larger display.

Health features: useful, but easy to overstate

ECG, blood oxygen, blood pressure and body composition were prominent selling points in 2021, but they were not interchangeable or automatically medical-grade.

  • ECG: a watch ECG is a reading taken under specific conditions, not continuous clinical cardiac monitoring.
  • Blood oxygen: readings can vary with fit, movement and conditions and should not be treated as a diagnosis.
  • Body composition: smartwatch estimates are not equivalent to laboratory or clinical measurements.
  • Blood pressure: availability and regulatory status were especially market-dependent. Samsung stated that its blood-pressure function was not available in the US in the cited 2021 launch material.

Before relying on a health feature, check its availability for your country, age, phone model and software version. If you have a health concern, use a qualified clinician rather than a watch reading as the basis for diagnosis or treatment.

Buying a 2021 model in 2026

A historical winner is not automatically a good modern purchase. Apple Watch Series 7, Galaxy Watch 4, Venu 2, Sense and Forerunner 55 units may now be used, refurbished, discontinued or sold through inconsistent channels. Research for this ranking did not verify current official prices for every model, so current resale prices should not be presented as fixed recommendations.

For any used or refurbished unit, check:

  • battery health and whether it can complete a full day or workout;
  • the original or compatible proprietary charger;
  • warranty, return rights and water-resistance condition;
  • LTE carrier compatibility and whether the cellular service can be activated;
  • regional availability of ECG, blood oxygen, blood pressure and other health functions;
  • remaining software-support life and app compatibility;
  • whether a newer successor offers better sensors, storage, GPS or software for a similar price.

Samsung’s current comparison page lists newer Galaxy Watch generations, including Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 8. Those newer models are generally more credible current alternatives than paying an inflated price for a 2021 Galaxy Watch 4; verify live stock, support and checkout pricing before purchasing.

2021 verdict

The Apple Watch Series 7 was the best smartwatch of 2021 for iPhone owners because it offered the most polished combination of apps, communication, safety, health and fitness features. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 was the best Android choice and marked a significant return to Wear OS for Samsung. Garmin’s Venu 2 won for battery-first fitness users, Fitbit’s Sense for wellness-focused tracking, and Garmin’s Forerunner 55 for affordable running.

The correct buying order was simple: identify your phone ecosystem first, then decide whether you value apps and communication or battery life and training depth. That choice mattered more than any single sensor or headline specification.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
